You can use Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape (or other programs ) for create renders in automated mode, but quality of this renders usualy awful. For best quality you need to do it manualy.

Yeah, but like, how? I've tried in photoshop but it won't really let me..zoom in on the pic and still..keep my finger down on the lasso tool

You need cut off background or trace images ? For trace you need vector images editing program.

You need to purchase/download, as I know it has 30-day trial perod for free use, or you can use Inkscape (it's free).

I have a special request/challenge here for anybody who thinks they can do it.

In addition to being a big Haruhi fan, I'm also a big fan of the Montreal Canadiens hockey team. So, if somebody could take this pic...

Spoiler for Hockey pic:

and...

1) Crop out the player's face and replace it with Haruhi making an equally large smile, and then...

2) Re-size to fit as an avatar...

I'd be VERY greatly appreciatory.

It might make for a good challenge for one of this forum's computer graphic imaging experts.

Only face can be croped (without player's helmet) ?

While this isn't the place for discussion, the original image does say "TURUYASAN," and it's not like it's an entirely "wrong" romanization.
