Anything in particular that stood out about CoalGG's? They seemed alright to me :?

That's why I indicated "I'd recommend you wait for another one if you're not picky with the translations."

Honestly, I didn't know what you guys were talking about regarding the "bleeping" since there was none on the one I viewed, until I searched and found out which part was bleeped.

Ah, so one of the TV stations decided to bleep out "You're just a servant with a womb" and "nothing but a low-class female escort." Yeah, I guess that could be subjected to censors.

Oh, I did notice Shannon was mispelled, but no idea how I missed "Rokken Island." Though it probably only sounds ackward because I'm not used to seeing/reading it that way.

Then you should have no problem watching their subs then. It's just me (and maybe a few others).

I know this has nothing to do with Episode 1, but what a wanker. I like how he/she talks about the patch being "weeabooed-up", but then uses Japanese emotes him/herself...

Maria not referring to herself in 3rd person...

You know, 3rd person speaking is actually common in young children in Japan. It's considered normal due to the way the Japanese treat their pronouns. In English however, referring to one's self in 3rd person is considered outlandish, even for a child. So it's not something that's particularly easy to translate properly.

I don't have a problem. They're not bad at all, especially for speedsubbers.

After watching the subbed version, I have to say the episode was better than I initially though. Then again, the raw I watched was really awful quality. Could barely make out what the characters were saying. Sub was fine. I didn't really have any major problems with it except for (nitpicking) over Shannon's name spelling.

Gave the episode an 8/10.

Pretty true: we chosed the third person because of Maria's behavior and insistence on some words in general.
But there is absolutely no guarantee she wouldn't talk with "I". Finally, it does give a very sharp contrast in the way she talk (VN players know what I'm talking about, please do not sail on dangerous waters).

Just curious, what are the cultural implications of the different forms of " I "? Like using 3rd person compared to watashi or bokuwa (female vs male) or ore (more masculine or w/e)...like how does speaking 3rd person fit into one of those descriptions? (crazy girl who might get crazier/creepier?)

edit:
Coming from someone who has no background concept of the series...i thought the first episode wasn't too bad. Sure it was a lot of "food to munch on" at once, i think with a series like this that they need a big impact with the first episode, so sometimes making it fast paced a bit in the first or first two episodes makes sense, but slowing it down to cover the rest is/should be a focus/priority

Other than that, i think this series has potential and looks to be pretty promising if executed well.

oh and the OP and ED are great. I like em a lot.

The thing that's awkward about "Rokken Island" is that it's half-Japanese, half-English. The only options I'd consider would be "Six House Island" or "Rokkenjima", personally.

It's not a huge deal, just a bit odd.

Why? Rokken is a name, there is no need to translate it.
But it's very funny if they turn Nijima to Ni Island

"Rokkenjima" itself is also a (fictional) name, so it's a matter of consistency. If you're going to translate it, why not go the whole way?

I've seen Niijima being called "Niijima Island" to avoid the same issue, despite the redundancy.

Sure the details were cut out, but they did manage to hit the big parts: the characters, the meeting, the introduction of Beatrice and the epitaph, and the Maria-Rosa relationship.

Overall I gave it a 9/10 for its promptness. Rather than spending minutes on details that could be covered in later episodes, it went straight to the facts and I am pleased with the outcome.
Aside from your score of 9/10 (I'll rate it 7/10 myself) this post pretty much says what I wanted to. Also I think people should ease up a bit on the "they didn't cover this scene" talk. Especially for things that explains character actions.. there is a very good chance they cover it in the next few episodes... Battler and his family situation, Natsuhi and Eva's tense relationship.. they have scenes to include them instead of trying to cram them and everything else into episode 1.

What charisma? I'm sure he was charismatic in the past but atm Kinzo to me has as much charisma as a dead person. He's a raving lunatic atm and nowhere near being charismatic. I was going to mention this in the music thread after the drama cd came out but I forgot but seriously can you explain this? I just don't see it, no one I talk to sees it in this scene.

If the name is Rokkenjima, not Rokken, why only the Rokken part has the furigana above the Kanji ?

Because they didn't want someone calling it "Rokukenjima" or "Rokuinkenjima"? If it was on Niijima instead I think they'd leave the "jima" alone in that case, too, but you seem to agree that "Nii Island" is ridiculous.
