You're wrong about that.
In such cases, the visual representation isn't everything.

It's like a piece of art with background history.
The more you are aware of what it represents, the broader fantasy your mind can enjoy.

Yes, you can. But for many, the satisfaction of canon background is very significant.
That's why when the same concept is explored in canon material, the effect is far greater than when it's done in an insignificant fanfic.

Lets say you have a drawing of a girl. With no info, it's just a picture.
Then you read a text that says she's actually a boy.
At that very moment, a piece of background info is given.
ANY info about the picture automatically generates a background, and if it piques interest of the observer, the said observer may take action to gain more info.

My point is that people love to post pictures of "girls" without any comment and then somehow find it awesome if other viewers take them for what they apparently are.
It seems to be some sort of sport, but it makes no sense.
To the ones lacking any other information, of course they can only go with what they have.
