Just a hunch mostly. Over at another forum they think that they're probably named after some places in France, so it's pretty much anyone's guess at this point.

Now I understand the Pokemon Z joke on reddit...
My pokemon days ended back when there were only 151(did play silver though). Occasionally I feel like picking up one of the newer games and giving those a shot, but the "catch 'em all" game is long gone.

How is the plot in the newer generation games? I remember back in red/blue its almost non existent.

Better, but still not even close to being worth being called a buying point. The real draw is that the battling is infinitely better than it used to be (example: Physical/Special split within types based on the attack itself).

It's a parody of the character Kyubey from Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Yes, I know it's Kyubey, but why specifically choose this Pokemon? Is it some pun based on the characters in their names or what?

Plot got a lot better, but otherwise it's still "defeat gym leaders, elite four, then champion, credits roll". But there are more stuff you can do after that.

Some people get the games for competitive battle, which has greatly improved since they divided special and physical attack/defense.

Plot is still quite meager really, every generation so far has always been about some evil organization bent on conquering the world with the help of some legendary Pokemon and the player character striving to be the champion of the respective region's league.

The only one that's been a little better I feel is Black and White's story, while it still has the world domination plot, they have characters that start questioning the ethics of using Pokemon to fight one another and keeping them confined in things like Pokeballs. It's like a very child-friendly way of examining issues like animal abuse and slavery. It's pretty interesting for a franchise where such a thing has never been questioned before and accepted as normal.

The story is not the main draw of Pokemon though and it never has been. Pokemon is a franchise that largely thrives on socialism. Being able to battle and trade with other folk all over the world is a very attractive feature for a lot of people. Personally I still play the games for the collection aspect.~

I CAN'T BELIEVE WE HAVE TO WAIT 10 MONTHS!!! I'VE JUST SEEN THE STARTERS AND LEGENDARIES AND I'M ALREADY EXCITED. gIVEN THAT THE SUBLETTERS Y AND X IN THE TITLES REFRENCE DIMENSIONAL AXES POINTS I'M WONDERING IF THE PLOT OF THE GAME WILL HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH ALTERNATE DIMENSIONS; LIKE THE REVERSE WORLD IN PLATINUM.

AS FAR AS THE STARTERS GO I'M SUPER EXCITED I LOVE FOXES SO FENNICAN WILL BE MY CHOICE HANDS DOWN. I AGREE WITH OTHERS THAT THIS ONE SHOULD NOT BE A FIRE/FIGHTING TYPE EVOLUTIONARY. IT WOULD BE COOL THOUGH IF IT WOULD BECOME MAYBE LIKE A FIRE/Psychic TYPE LIKE VICTINI THAT WOULD BE COOL.

I PROBABLY WON'T MAKE A REAL CHOICE UNTIL SEPTEMBER WHEN BY THEN THE FULL POKEDEX FOR THIS SERIES SHOULD COME OUT. AND CONSIDERING THAT WE ARE ALREADY AT 649 POKEMON THIS ONE WILL PROBOABLY HAVE UP TO NEARLY 800 WITH THESE GAMES.

THE SIMULATIONS IN THE ANNOUNCEMENT SEEM TO SUPPORT THIS AS WE SEE THE STARTER BATTLING PSYDUCK, KIRLIA, PATRAT, AND WE SEE A WILD PIKACHU.

AS FAR AS WHAT COMES AFTER I HOPE THEY DO A SEQUEL TO RUBY SAPPHIRE AND EMERALD RATHER THEN JUST A REMAKE. LIKE WHITE 2 AND BLACK 2 WERE SEQUELS THAT WOULD BE COOL YEP I THNK THEY'LL MAKE A 3DS FOR HOENN REMAKE IN 2014.

Console pokemon would have better success.

No, only Gen V. Gen II introduced two new types, special defense, and held items. Gen III introduced abilities. Gen IV introduced the physical/special split.

Direct sequels aren't really a gameplay element, and both triple battles and rotation battles are horrible. Plus, technically Gold/Silver was a direct sequel to Red/Blue/Green.

Gen 2 were pretty much sequels to Gen 1, I guess. Same enemy force and some past characters reappearing.
