I only noticed a line of dialogue in episode 17, while translating it to portuguese, that plugs another hole in the original, i.e. "How did they build those underground cities so fast?".

Spoiler for Underground Cities:

Well done Mr. Izubuchi, very well done. It doesn't totally make up for that "10 month before" sign, which pretty much fracks the whole established timeline but still...

Even though it was, my second? This is a freebie for anyone who wants a Yamato signature.

So the impression I'm getting from some very hesitant reading is that this remake hasn't done too much in the way of completely annihilating the source material. As someone who hasn't actually seen the original series, is it even worth it to go back and watch the original or does this pretty much cover it?

Quite the contrary, this respects the original in many ways. They did away with some of the sillier stuff and the rest was expanded with materials Either cut from the original, when the show went from having a 52 episode order to only 26, or from other sources Like the many manga versions of the original. In the end, though the story sice chapter 3 has taken a massive detour from the original, keeping only some of the most important plot points, it is changed for the better.I would watch the original just to understand all Those differences but it is by no means necessary. Us, older fans, who saw the original back when it came out, love it inspite of its huge flaws. I fear that anyone watching it just for comparison's sake won't feel the same.

Someone has already put the just released second soundtrack album to use in rescoring the first Girls und Panzer episode on NicoNico:

I still don't know the detail bits (which usually is the character development parts) in episodes 19-22, so it is entirely possible for her character to be expanded on. Though I have no illusions of them adding yet another love interest to the story. Yet that is a possible path.

There is always the chance that Yurisha could replace Be Forever, Yamato's Sasha, but if the story is heading the way I think it might, I doubt it.

Spoiler for Be Forever, Yamato, the orignal series ending and 2199's ending.:

EDIT:

And something interesting. Did you know the original theme song for Space Battleship Yamato had four verses? We usually only hear one or two. I've never heard the third or fourth verses before. But that changes.

Well the triangles are highly overused, so I definitely don't mind that no new one is created.
On the other hand its kinda sad that they dismissed the first one so soon again after having even bothered

-creating her character in the first place
-changing her brother's name so she could be Akira Yamamoto (which was originally her brother)
- giving her a background story

I too doubt she will replace Be Forever's Sasha btw, we already got hints for the opposite.

Spoiler for Endings:

Edit:
tbH I THINK I even heard the japanese intro for the first time; as Japan used to give the licenses for intro/outro separately from the main story.
I also think they just translated the english version into german back then. As said I'm not sure though its been a while ssince I last saw the original work...

Or I saw it in english on cartoon network no idea anymore ><

Usually one would only hear the first verse as the opening for the show. For all its seasons, despite them not heading to Iscandar in later seasons.

In concerts sometimes the second verse would be sung as well as the first. Reportedly this version is a sound-a-like singing the third and fourth verses, but they are the correct lyrics. A very good sound-a-like. As far as I know there are no official recording of those verses on any album or single. But the lyrics were released over 30 years ago for all four verses.

The fighters launching looks like footage from episode 5 just with a different background and a few different transition cuts.

That's not a bad thing since they've not launched fighters all that much, and it saves time. Also it was well done the first time.

Still confirmation on how they land those things.

Nothing on how they land the Falcons but judging on how Kodai launches his Zero (the catapult on is side was desteoyed só he improvises, just a wicked cool launch) to chase after the UX-01, i'm guessing that the opposit might old for the Zero's retrieval. My theory on the Falcons is that they are collected by the starboard side dock and craned back to the hangar. There's what seems to be an access door on the rear wall só, maybe. Hopefully, either they still show it or at least the Earth art book will have some material on that.

Perhaps the only real fault in the Gamilas plan is that they didn't all attack together. And that might have been a calculated risk. Especially considering what Yamato has done to other Gamilas fleets so far in the show.

Escorts would have been nice, but I suppose none were avalible.

Spoiler for Gimleh:

Late July will see the release not only of chapter 6 in home video but also the Yamato and Yamato 2199 MV Series Blu-Ray/DVDs. For those who don't know what the MV Series was, in a nutshell, they're selected pieces of music set to edited animation clips, in essence, Music Videos (MV).
Here are some samples of what you will get in those releases.

Yamato 2199 - The Yamato Departs the Earth (OST 1)

The same theme from the Symphonic Suite Yamato, named Take Off

Yamato 2199 - Ambition (OST1) + Ambition (Ambitious Young Man) (OST 2)

Yamato Symphonic Suite - Hope for Tomorrow

Yamato MV Series and Yamato 2199 MV Series will be published July 24th. Check the video descriptions for more info.
