the reason for the odd shadowing on Nagisa and Fuko is simple.in the original..

they are standing under a tree and it is creating the shadow

Are you planning on including the trees?

If not, I feel that it would be better to ditch those shadows completly.

It would be a better idea to remove the shadowing.

But really, it takes the same technique to do the background as it takes to do the characters. The only difference is blurring it at the end.
