A lot going on in those pictures. Though stills can also give one an impression of things going on in the background that are not said. Lots of readout and maps for instance. As well as things that one might not catch at full speed.

Or fanservice that one would catch, but can linger on in a still. There appears to be a bit for both Yuki and Yamamoto, though some of the fanservice for Yuki would be single frame type shots.

Spoiler for service or serious talk?:

Save maybe the bath scene with the two of them. The stills make it look like Yuki is trying to gain the upper hand with her larger assets in her bid to establish dominance on shipper's rights.

Mecha shots are also very nice. Dommel's ship is huge and shows it much better than in the original series. Also some effects look rather interesting, particularly around Balun, though Gamilas shots are also interesting in their details. Also the starting to see the scope of Dommel's fleet, though some ships on the Chapter 5 cover seem absent in what I could see so far. It is possible there are there and I missed them or they are later in other episodes.

The warp gate thingy is huge. Plus I can't gauge yet exactly what Balun is. A planet? A gas planet, and brown dwarf star? A gas planet with an artificial sun inside it? In any of these cases, I figure Yamato will need to rush the gate to take time off her trip to Iscandar, but to keep Dommel's Fleet from following too quickly, they need to blow the gate...or perhaps blowing the gate is Dommel's plan (like dropping a star in them). Either way, I envision a large part of Dommel's fleet, including the majority of his flagship, being destroyed there. Either in Episode 18 or 19.

Notice there is a large fleet exiting the gate behind Domel so there's a lot of fleet to discover.



I like the detail that they then pan left showing only the ring in the distance and it takes a full 5 seconds for Balun to come into frame. Nice touch to give you an idea of how enormous that structure is. And remember, Domel's ship is 700 meters long and it's tiny next to it and to the Balun base.

As for Balun... i don't know what it is but it seems to be split in half as you can see straight through it "equator".

If the "artificial sun" does appear in 2199, i have a feeling that it will be Balun itself, instead of a small fire ball in orbit. (Perhaps the Akerius ruin go critical and ignite the planet? )

The plot points for chapter 5 have the Yamato being lured into Domel's fleet and taking heavy damage. Although they manage to escape they need extensive repairs and find refuge in planet Beemera. While dealing with a crew uprising (having realised that even with it's warp technology, the Yamato won't make the trip in just one year, especially with Domel's massive fleet on their tail) Kodai finds Akerian ruins on the planet and needs to figure out how to use them to activate the local warp gate. This will shave a big chunk off their journey. Finaly in episode 18, the Yamato reaches Balun and Okita makes a desperate gamble and decides to make a run for the Balun gate...with Domel's massive fleet blocking his way. So yeah, the warp gate at Balun will play a part. As for if it will end with its destruction or not... we'll have to wait and see.

After seeing these episodes, especially 14 which, man, oh man, is one hell of an acid trip (and in a good way) i got an idea in my crazy mind about Yurisha, Yuki and Yuria and how they're connected. This is probably way off of what will eventually be revealed, i don't have yet the benefit of watching these in subtitled form, so dialogue info is yet to be factored in, and symbolic obscure stuff like the painting in the hospital room is beyhond my knowledje level. So take this as a rambling fan trying to make sense of it with what he's got, nothing more. Also, most of this was pieced together from scenes that are either dreams, flashbacks or visions so who knows how much of it actually hapened?

Text in BOLD are descriptions of the scenes in the episode, normal text are my assumptions.

Episode 12 - Yuria's dream:
She's a nurse at the hospital, presumably around the same time Yuki was there, after she was injured in a bombing loosing her memory. Yuria sees Dr. Sado and staff leave a room. She enters the room and sees a woman lying in bed. She's hooked to life support wearing an oxigen mask. While she looks at her, a figure made of light, like a spirit, appears behind her (at the same time, in present day Yamato, one of Shima's personnel sees the same figure while he's in the auto-pilot booth). Yuria turns to face the figure and wakes up, screaming.

I believe the woman in bed is Yurisha, not Yuki. Why? That comes next.

In episode 14, while delving in Yuki's mind, Mirenel, posing as a nurse, helps Yuki up out of bed. She seems to be suffering from memory loss and reacts when she ears her name in a new report. She then hears the sound of chimes and sees another bed in the room. A courtain hides that bed from view. Yuki goes to her and sees the woman we saw in Yuria's dream, the one on life support. The two could be twins. Mirenel grins behind Yuki but the smile fades away into shock when the woman opens her eyes. A woman in a dress is seen running through some ruins (i presume these are on Iscandar), when she turns she looks like a slightly older version of Yuria. Mirenel stares in panic. Yuria has been replaced by a woman in Iscandarian clothes - the real Yurisha - which, much like Sasha looks a lot like Yuki. Mirenel looks at the two women, apparently unable to tell which is Yuki and which is Yurisha. Next we see Yuki holding the alien device she was seen with in previous episodes. Mirenel seems to understand that Yurisha is also there, inside Yuki's mind, trying to fight her influence. Yurisha calls Yuki by name. Yuki is awoken from her transe by Yuria which, when called by name, doesn't seem to know who Yuria is, as if she's someone else. At the mention of the WM Engine she says "My sister is there". It is only after this that Mirenel seems to actively be capable of influencing Yuki like she has with the rest of the crew. After Mirenel is disposed of inside the WM Core chamber, we see Yuria looking at Yuki and Kodai with a blank stare. We next see her as the episode ends, bathed in light, under the auto pilot sphere as she says "Goodbye, me. Hello, you. You are Misaki. Yuria Misaki." The sound of chimes is heard as the beam of light fades.

Yep, this is a lot of stuff. My explanation is this. Yurisha arrived on Earth at about the same time Yuki had her accident. (A year ago). She sustained injuries that have disabled her to some point. Having some level of telepathic power, she imprints herself into both Yuria and Yuki in order to, should the need arise, use them as sort of avatars to her, like in this episode. Yuria's imprint was probably accidental as she was in a coma (or alike) when Yuria came into the room. Yuria seems to have no active memory of the event. Yuki, being aware of the telepathic imprint, serves as an active surrogate, like in episode 2. In 14, with Yuki under Mirenel's control, Yurisha calls upon Yuria, who she has been reaching out to for a few episodes, and uses her as a surrogate. What scares Mirenel inside Yuki's mind is the imprinted Yurisha. Once she understands which part of Yuki's mind is actually hers, she bypasses Yurisha and gains control over Yuki's actions, explaining why Yuki falls under her spell in the final stretch of the episode.

All this is pure conjecture on my part and i'm probably way off but it's what i came up with. Take it with a grain of salt.

and it shows up only in restricted contexts and not in fighting ...

What i put in my post is just a small part of a much larger story. Episode 14 is one hell of a rollercoaster.

I seem to recall a plot line from Tim Eldred about the ghost in the machine. And while in Yamato 2199 we already have that in the autopilot with Yurisha, I wonder about the line, At the mention of the WM Engine she says "My sister is there". Could Sasha's spirit also be in there? In the Wave Motion Core? Providing a backup personality in case one or both of these women die later in the story.

Oh btw, do we have any idea how well Ticket and Blu-Ray sales are doing? I've been thinking that Gundam The Origin (which is basically this but with Gundam) might use this format instead of the strictly OVA movie format Unicorn used, since it's more fitting its serialized nature. So I'm curious how big of a success it has been.

Though I can't say what the theater sales are like for Yamato in the 10 - 12 theaters they were shown in. I know that the Limited Edition BD they sold at those theaters sold out within days of the opening though.

Well its Gundam; it was probably always going to do gangbusters. I just think that Yamato's format, a really high-budgeted TV series chopped up into 7 parts and shown as a movie serial first, would fit a retelling of Gundam better than trying to fit into the thematic structure of 50 minute OVAs.

The main difference is that Yamato will be finished in roughly a year and a half with seven volumes while this Gundam series will have taken three and a half years for less total material.
