when Mandrake starts up, what happens exactly? Does it start X or does it kick you to the command line? If so, what type of error does it give you? or is it that KDE is not listed when you pick interfaces?

In future I suggest going to linux (in this case mandrake) forums for this It's just they might able to help you with that better (there are some *nix ppl here, but still).

Try running xfree86setup. If that doesn't help, you can try posting what you have in the "Screen section" of your XF86Config (should be in /etc/X11/, so use "vim /etc/X11/XF86Config" to open it) here. In any case, you are more likely to get help somewhere else like LinuxQuestions.org or Mandrake Users.
