When Kyon started that line, I thought for sure he was going to imply that she shouldn't get attracted to Itsuki since she's "not his type," if you know what I mean. That would have been even more hilarious than what he did say.

Vol 8 Editor-in-Chief★Straight Ahead! features three short abstract pieces by Yuki. I shall attempt to interpret what they mean and thus probe into the mind of everyone's favourite moe Living Humanoid. Discussions are most welcome, as not even I completely understand what they mean.

I am a ghost, said the girl when we met about ｘｘｘｘ before.

When I asked for her name, "I do not have a name." was her answer. "Since I do not have a name, I am a ghost. You are probably the same." the girl continued.

That is correct. I am also a ghost. If a being is able to converse with ghosts, then that being must also be a ghost. Like I am now.

"Ghost" probably refers to Yuki being a speechless Living Humanoid Interface (called LHI from now on) created by the Integrated Data Sentient Entity (IDSE). Kyon had mentioned many times how Yuki's existence was so weak that it was like she wasn't there, so "ghost" pretty much fits her description before she met Haruhi and Kyon.

The girl being mentioned could either be Haruhi, Ryoko or Kimidori Emiri. As the girl refers to herself as a "ghost" as well, then the girl could also be referring to an LHI like Yuki. It doesn't have to be Ryoko or Emiri, it could be any LHI in general.

"Well then, shall we go?"

She said, and I followed. The girl's steps were so light, she looked completely alive. Where will you go, the girl asked me, as she stopped moving her feet and turned around.

"You can go anywhere. Was there a place you wanted to go to?"

I was lost in thought for a moment. Where have I gotten to? What is this place? Why am I here?

Yuki had no idea why she had existed all along, besides observing Haruhi. It was the girl that inspired Yuki to begin thinking. This makes it confusing as it means the girl could be Haruhi after all.

As I stood still, I couldn't help but gaze into the girl's dark eyes.

"Weren't you thinking of going to ｘｘｘｘ?"

White things were falling from the sky. Numerous, tiny, fluttering, aqueous crystals.

The girl had discerned my answer. When I heard those words, I finally understood what my own role was. Yes. I was on my way there. How could I forget? For this important matter, I had a reason to live and exist.

It is something I must not forget.

Yuki begins to develop a personality of her own instead of being a mere observing drone.

"So, that's that, then."

The girl smiled happily. I nodded, and expressed my thanks to her.

"Good bye."

The girl disappeared, leaving me by myself. She had probably returned to her place. And in the same way, I had to return to my place.

White things were falling from the sky. Numerous, tiny, fluttering, aqueous crystals. They fell to the earth and vanished.

It was one of the wonders that filled time and space. In this world, such wonders were common. I stood absolutely still. The passing of time had lost its meaning.

The snow ("white crystals") were "wonders that filled time and space". This probably refers to the (happy) memories and experience Yuki had spent with the SOS Brigade.

Those wonders of bound cotton continued to fall, one after another.

This shall be my name.

And with that thought, I was a ghost no more.

This part is pretty straightforward. For the Japanese word for snow is "yuki".

I'll continue with Parts 2 and 3 once I have time.

You know, I read that as if Yuki saw snow for the first time, and then described the snow flakes in her own "humanoid interface" way. Being marveled by this "wonder from this world" she decided this would become her name (Yuki).

Oh whatever --- No wait, on second thought, I couldn’t take things so lightly this time. This was something important, after all. To know whether I continued to exist after my death was an important thing I needed to know. I dare say that Nagato’s answer here will influence my entire life.

Nagato didn’t reply. She had a very weird expression on her face. I couldn’t tell what was it, but I knew that something was off. Even if no one were to notice it, I would always be able to read Nagato’s emotions. After all, I’ve been together with her for almost an entire year now. All the time spent observing her this past year has been sufficient to read her emotions, I dare say. Plus, there were many incidents last year that practically forced me to read her emotions. So, I don’t think that I’m wrong on this one.

Nagato ---

Was still not willing to say anything. And her expression was definitely weird. It was as if she was trying to tell me something ---

“………”

Nagato looked at me, as if I had just cracked a lame joke. Can’t you at least smile?

Nagato’s response finally came. Needless to say, it was very short and simple.

“That’s classified information.”

If this is Nagato's idea of a joke, then I'll dare say she's more or less got it right this time round.

Heck, now I want to see THIS scene animated, if only for the sake of hearing Yuki say,

Until then, I had never been by myself. I was one of many. I was a part of the set.

My group was bound together like ice, eventually expanded like water, and finally diffused like vapor.

And a single particle of that vapor, was me.

The body of water most likely represents the IDSE itself, spawning many LHI (water vapours) like Yuki. Yuki's mind had been consistent with that of the IDSE until she gradually developed a personality and even flipped out in Vol 4.

I was able to go anywhere. I went to various places, and saw various things. But I did not learn anything. There was only the act of seeing, for that was the only function allowed me.

For a long interval, I was like that. Time was pointless. All the phenomena in that artificial universe held no significance.

But in time, I found meaning. Proof of my existence.

Matter attracts matter. This is the truth. I was drawn in, because it possessed form.

In the beginning, all Yuki ever knew was to observe Haruhi, and nothing else. But both Haruhi and Kyon (especially Kyon) made Yuki realized there's more to her life than just observe.

Light, darkness, contradiction, and common sense. I had encountered, and connected with each one. Those functions were not in me, but perhaps I might not mind having them.

If I were allowed to, I would have them.

As I continue to wait, will those wonders keep on falling?

Those tiniest of wonders.

She "connected" with the stuff that gives a person his/her humanity. She did not possess these "functions" at first, but she embraced them and begun to desire for more of these "wonders"

Three random quotes from Wandering Shadow I found amusing for some reason:

I couldn’t say that I completely disagreed with Haruhi. I had seen Shamisen stare at an empty corner of my room for long periods before, as if looking at something I couldn’t see. But apparently cats were different from dogs. Even if they really did see a spirit, they wouldn’t fall ill. As a cat owner, I think I understand this very well.

Maybe sometime in the far future, religion will be a thing of the past. That’s too bad, Asahina-san. Maybe I should teach you a thing or two about religion. Well, maybe some time in the future.

Kyon is going to help Asahina "find religion".... if you know what I mean.

Volume 8 only has 2 stories, but they're very long, almost thrice the length of your average chapter. Both of them are unrelated stories, so it's safe to read Shadow while waiting for Editor to be done. Besides, what could you possibly spoil about Editor? ;P

From Vol 06: The Melancholy of Asahina Mikuru

After looking into Nagato's negative four degrees Celsius eyes, for some reason I felt sick to the stomach.

Faced with Haruhi’s sadistic smile, Nagato’s even colder-than-usual expression and Koizumi’s annoying smirk which seemed to suggest he was mildly enjoying this, I desperately racked my brain for some sort of explanation, like a lost soul furiously trying to squeeze out some water from a dry sponge in the middle of the Sahara Desert. Beside me, Asahina-san was thrown into a total state of panic, together with the kettle, tea leaves and all.

I really don't think I need to explain any further. You guys can probably guess the rest.

Asahina-san looked at me, as she slowed down her footsteps. I encouraged her by saying, “I’m sure she’ll help us. She’s also got a spare room, and it’s just a week after all, I don’t think she’ll mind you staying there.”

If possible, I too would like to stay. I even thought of a perfect excuse.

Way to go, Kyon! Go for that threesome! ^^;

ADD2] Vol 07: Chapter 1

After that, Asahina-san, who looked like she was about to faint, shoved half of her remaining curry rice onto Nagato’s plate. It was only after the three of us had finished eating that Nagato served us tea.

“Thanks for your hospitality. I’ll be going now.”

“Huh? Kyon-kun, aren’t you going to stay with me?”

Asahina-san, who was quietly sipping her tea before, suddenly looked at me with shocked eyes. Even Nagato turned to look at me, her cup still placed by her mouth.

“Well, that’s......”

The desire to say aloud “Well, that’s not such a bad idea” sped through my mind, like a runaway spaceship. Images of Asahina-san, dressed in one of Nagato’s nightgowns, drying her hair with a towel, as well as Nagato, whose hair was still wet, silently gulping down a cup of milk, appeared in my mind before disappearing with a flash. For some reason, Haruhi’s face appeared in my mind, as my memory drifted back to the two bed sheets in the other room. This woke me up from my fantasies, as I said,

“Well, that’s too bad. I’ll come over here tomorrow after school.”

Damn that Haruhi!

I never once regretted reverting that world, where Haruhi and Koizumi were non-North High students and where Asahina-san didn’t have any memory of me, back to normal. But I also slightly missed that world. The day that Asakura made the oden, just as I was about to leave---

Nagato displayed a light smile.

I really wanted to see it again.

I really hoped I could.

Damn man can't seem to make up his mind on which girl he likes best.
