Shinjuku Satomi Hakkenden (BONES)
http://yamaguchi.cool.ne.jp/iricomix/
Irie, the director of Kurau, is saying that last year he did a full CG 16 min short animation called Shinjuku Satomi Hakkenden. There is a 2 minute trailer version of it running in the BONES booth at TAF this year along with other BONES trailers as part of the demo reel. It's not clear if this will eventually become a movie/TV series/OVA or if it's just for demo purposes. But it is BONES' first full CG animation work for what it's worth. |

It looks like it'll be a Nanso Satomi Hakkenden adaptation in the same way that Romeo x Juliet was a Romeo and Juliet adaptation. Which is to say, it may borrow the basic outline but aside from having 8 warriors there's not likely to be much in common with the original. More a reimagination than an adaptation really.

Well, the last Hakkenden-based anime was a goddamn epic animator fest. Shinji Hashimoto, Mitsuo Iso, Takashi Nakamura, Tetsuya Nishio, Shinya Ohira, Hiroyuki Okiura, Satoru Utsunomiya, Masaaki Yuasa.
No way to top that unless you are doing it just for fun. 8) |

Irie has commented on his site's forum that he does not consider his work on Hakkenden to be a "pilot film" trying to sell a larger concept. He finds that pilot films aren't very useful, and he didn't need one for Kurau either. Basically he feels that the 16 minute short he did of Hakkenden over the past year is a short film that he wanted to make, and that's all it is.
There's still no information of how BONES plans on selling or distributing the complete work, but at least now we know it's finished and they simply put a short trailer out to tell people about Irie's project. |

Irie has commented on his site that he feels the work will be hard to commercialize because it is a short 16min film, and he has no plans or intentions on extending it or doing a continuation of any sort. He says that the site will be updated once there are any plans on releasing the complete short in any way.
