well, actually a scythe is a weapon similar to the "grim reaper's". a Sword is a whole different thing.

From what I know, a scythe is an overly large sickle. Basically, a long pole with two handles and a very large, curved blade on the end with only the inside sharpened.
From what I know, it's a farming implement. Also seen on the Grim Reaper and clerics of Nerull...
