The scenery artwork is definitely the highlight of the show. Some of it is truly gorgeous, and in brief moments even breathtaking.

The BGM is often quite nice as well. The girls are all reasonably likeable and well-designed.

But honestly, scenery beauty aside, this show seems a bit too dull/weightless to me. I'm just not seeing much hook here. Even Tamayura seems, well, aggressive compared to this show.

In reality, the girls might actually not include guys in their world that much, and try not to include their elder brother. But the author and producers are on the one hand gently satirizing male-free shows, and on the other hand making their own, probably to cater to what they believe to be the market's preference. Or maybe they have read your past comments are are just doing it to spite you. In any case, the barely-glimpsed male was an amazing effect.

I was pretty well indifferent to Tamayura from the start, and only lasted 3-4 episodes. But this show engages me, for some reason. I actually care a bit about a couple of the characters. We'll see how long that lasts. I like shows with pauses and silences in them. It gives space for me to infer whatever I want, lol.

eh...scenery not that good looking. Lots of shows have good looking backgrounds, its not going to carry the show though.

Character personalities are pretty bland right now, and I don't think anything else is going to surface.

What I find fascinating is the frequent use of a natural, ambient soundtrack. You really hear a country brook in the background and such. That alone is a nice change of pace.

While pretending to satirize a cliche at the same time as exploiting it is increasingly common in anime, I suspect the notion that this is satire at all is probably giving the show too much credit.

I too find this a little more biting than the monotonally sweet Tamayura. That might give it a little more staying power for me.

How so? What piece of dialogue, or what scene, in this first episode struck you as the least bit biting?

The first episode of Tamayura ~Hitotose~ had much more compelling pathos to it than the first episode of Non Non Biyori, imo.

I don't that's really the case at all. From the start of the manga, Suguru's been treated as a joke. He's just... there, and more often than not the girls forget that he's part of the class.

As for those looking for any kind of hook or plot, you might be disappointed a bit. Most of the stories are episodic, and either deal with Hotaru experiencing the country life (there's a chapter where she finds about corner stands for example), or the girls trying to find stuff to do with their time (which given where they are, they have a whole lot of).

And yes, Tamayura had a gradual coming of age thing going for it, for all four of the group of friends, but it was more visible for Potte. Non Non Biyori hasn't shown any of that, at least in the 3 translated volumes our of the 6 or so out so far that I've read.

Loved the scene about them not locking their doors, so so true. Even though this was a quieter more laid back first episode then some other shows I really enjoyed. Ren is adorable and I like that Suguru, is just kind of....there.

I just felt the humor was a little quirkier and less relentlessly heartwarming than in Tamayura.

the wind instrumental tracks, the harmonica, the view of the mountains did this for me. Having some unexpected punchlines also helps a lot.

The slight moments of confusion shown by Hotarun keeps the story in focus, though not sure how the later episodes will go.

I liked the first episode, but some of the music was getting on my nerves. The first grader playing the flute was cute, but after a while I just wanted her to stop it was so grating.

The amount of scenery porn in this is just fantastic. I liked the soothing backgrounds to be honest. I've read some of the manga itself but the anime gives a much slower, flowing pace than the manga, which was much more straightforward in execution. I guess these types of shows are the ones getting much better pacing over 20-odd minutes than other genres.

The character interaction was pretty decent for a first-episode; you can already see the relationship dynamic (granted, it's mainly focused on the core five four).

I liked how the brother's lack of presence was played with where nobody noticed he fell into a rotted part of the floor.

Episode 2:

Hotaru... what are you doing developing a crush on your cute senpai already? Get a grip, fifth-grader! I don't care if she is small and cute!

(BTW, speaking as someone who looked at least five years younger than his true age up until early high school, I can tell you that small kids in real life don't generally get that kind of "squee, aren't they adorable?!" reaction.)

Koma-chan's voice sounds awfully familiar... *checks MAL* Nyaruko, I knew it.

I think the glasses were probably the final straw in making Hotaru unrecognizable. I suppose you could say they make her look more sophisticated, and she didn't do that bad a job with the makeup either, but really girl! Trying way too hard. You scared and confused your poor senpai.

You would think Koma-chan would at least recognize her voice, but even still that was hilariously cute. I wonder where Hotoru's "girl crush" is going to go from here.
