It was rather a perfect lesson for them...basically its the real deal with genins only...

True survival...and doing all kinds of missions in 1..Recon/Escort/Assasination all in one..

care to explain why you think it was dumb?

Seemed like a very good test to me... it was the most ninja-like test out of the chunin exams... The genin needed to work in teams to complete a mission (obtain the scrolls within a certain time)... they were forced to basically go up against unknown ninjas they knew little to nothing about... They could be attacked at anytime, by unknown numbers, by enemies with unknown abilities... bascially it was everything they could expect on a serious high ranked mission... their abilities with fighting, stelth, and tactics were all being put to test... the 2nd test was pretty much the best

It was good compared to the other tests... written test was somewhat pointless in the long run, imo... and the third test, the tournement... well that's kinda nice way to show off their fighting skills, but how often are ninja battles one-on-one... that may have been how some missions worked out, but i think it's safe to say the majority will be more like team-vs-unknown numbers... not to mention the fighting skills were what we saw most in the third exam was not even the deciding factor of the chunin exams, it was tactics... grant it, the third shows both tactics and strength, but the 2nd test was much batter at showing off tactics and teamwork (important to ninja in naruto)

REason behind it was well-stated in verbal words...and it had a POINT. The End.

I think that they shouldn't have made the tournament a part of the test because many of the genins fought each other in the Forest of Death already so why repeat what's already happened?

well ya its kind of a good test but the thing i did not like was the fact that they made it TEAM vs. TEAM. y make them kill eachother.

Well...simply the result for example was shown that Konoha had the strongest Genins...since most of them got to the main matches...
Naruto, Sasuke, Shikamaru, Shino, Neji

It wasnt that they SHOULD kill eachother it's just that they need to pass their missions/test any way possible...

Retreat and lose something important to live...(fail by losing the scroll)
Or die with the scroll (fail and die..)

During the matches where judges where present...no one died...and that is what they wanted...(they stopped fights to prevent unneccesary deaths..)
Hinata would definetly die IF no one stopped Neji...

Well the teams didn't have kill each other, they just had to obtain a heaven and earth scroll by any means necessary. That includes negotiating, intimidating, stealing, trickery or fighting. The test is supposed simulate an actual ninja mission so killing is an option, but usually only teams with very powerful/unbalanced ninja like Gaara resort to killing their opponents.

At any rate, it's a better exam than the Mist village where you couldn't possibly advance without killing someone. They probably lost over half their potential ninja in the chuunin exams.

Sasuke beginning to fail as a character and Sakura just plain failing period.

Also the elimination of all ninja that weren't from Leaf, Sand, or Sound, and many of those that were...
