New Anime? Way out of the loop

It's been a long time since I've been emersed in the anime world, about 6 years since I was finished with college. This put a huge gap in finding new animes to watch and great mangas to read. I would deeply appreciate some help from the younger folk

I thought it would help to give an idea of what I enjoyed and what I didn't. (please note that any animes I didn't like this is not a slight against the creativity, artistry, or accomplishments this anime may or may not have received... It just didn't resonate with me)

I really enjoyed: Azumanga Daioh, Chobits, Rurouni Kenshin, Robotech, Gundam 0098? (the one with shard & amaro), Code Geass, Basilisk, Genesis of Aquarion, Air Gear, Nana, Hajime no Ippo, School Rumble, Deathnote (manga) and Welcome to NHK.

Stuff I didn't enjoy: Utena, Haruhi Suzumiya, Tenjou Tenge, My Hime

It's been difficult to find individuals at my age who enjoy this material, so any suggests are deeply appreciated (manga too).

On the side of school\slice of life comedy like Azumanga Daioh and School Rumble I suggest:

Nichijou
Lucky Star
Minami-ke

You should give
Steins;Gate and Madoka Magika a try, since they are the most acclaimed anime of the past two years.

The currently airing Attack on Titan and Suisei no Gargantia are pretty good. Of the first you might even want to check the manga it is based on.

Would like to echo the Steins;Gate recommendation, really enjoyed that show. If you get bored with a few of the episodes (though I don't recall it being that way), just know that it picks up in a really interesting way and ends on a very high note.

Madoka Magika is a pretty solid recommendation as well.

Are you familiar with Fate Stay Night? I would recommend you watching Fate Zero (more recent).

Another eye-candy/cool series I enjoyed was Kara no Kyoukai.

In terms of bigger, more popular/well known series, did you follow Naruto, Bleach, and Fairy tail back in the day? Although long, the first few seasons were very enjoyable.

Also, Sword Art Online is another one that I definitely recommend as well that's quite recent.

edit:
Oh and if you're just looking for a few laughs here and there, Gintama is a great series to watch every now and then.

Seconding Gintama. Gintama is like fried rice you know; a myriad of ingredients thrown into the wok and out comes this superb dish. In Gintama, there is comedy, action, romance, friendship, tragedy, parody, science fiction, etc, etc. On the whole, I would say comedy is definitely the anime's strongest point. I couldn't recommend this anime enough. It is my feeling that Gintama is not receiving enough love though.

Your avatar also reminded me...Toradora was a fun series as well haha.

Also the manga - Claymore is pretty good imo. It has an anime adaption, though the last like 3 episodes are more of an anime-specific ending, and the manga is still going on, and the anime-series ending was not well received at all. So feel free to watch the anime, then disregard like the last two or three episodes or something, and continue with the manga.

edit>

Oh and Ga-Rei Zero was pretty awesome for only being 13 episodes, and for being one of the most trolliest first episodes...EVAR.

Yup, I had good laughs from Toradora as well, but the last few episodes are rather mediocre.

Another good comedy would be Level E and Minami-ke. The level of trolling by the baka ouji in Level E is unrivalled by anyone.

Seconding Ga-Rei Zero. All the other suggestions are pretty solid, but yeah... Ga-Rei Zero is worthwhile enough to make me want to make another post just to second it.

Here are a couple of lists I've posted earlier that contain shows you might find appealing. For the most part they take place outside the high-school setting and involve adult characters: http://forums.animesuki.com/showthre...50#post4516450. Most of them were released between 2006 and 2013. Also check out this follow-up post with a few more suggestions: http://forums.animesuki.com/showthre...14#post4527814

Two other series not in either list that deserve a strong recommendation are Chihayafuru and Hikaru no Go.

I deeply appreciate your help. I now have good supply for a couple months! Wooo! Awesome

Just have to grab some 'Raminade,' and Pocky then I'm set for a full on nerd fest lol

btw Is there a new "bleach" or "Death note" that has hit the mainsteam? I remember the first year bleach fan subs came out. Katsucon was initiated with Bleach cosplayers. The same went for Deathnote.
