Bands like Epica, Nightwish and Within Temptation are pretty much all I listen to in regards to metal.

Ah, rock will always be my all-time favorite genre. \m/
I mostly like metal, like Iron Maiden, Sepultura, Savatage or Pantera; but I also enjoy some progressive rock, like Yes or Jethro Tull. =D

After Forever, Epica, Collide, Edenbridge, Leave's Eye, Krypteria, Lacuna Coil to name just the more obscure ones. You then have Within Temptation, Metalica, Nightwish etc etc. Give me guitars, drums and some catchy lyrics and I'm happy. In my book its either rock or really catchy. I hate that nonsense music by people who don't know how to play instruments or sing called metal though.

And now we could start a discussion about the terminology of "genre" and "style". (the latter is pretty fun, once you start talking about totally defined stuff like "Independent", "Alternative" or "Grunge" - and are more than bored)
But yes, J-Rock is equal to "rock", except that it indicates the land of heritage.

Which is exactly why its not a genre. It simply tells the country of origin while saying absolutely nothing of the style of music as it sorts everything from pop-rock to progressive rock to death metal under the same umbrella.

I'm a huge fan of Prog Rock/Metal (it is one of my favorite genres of music). While I don't consider the bands you listed as my favorites of the genre, I do consider them great bands.

Some of my favorites are Dream Theater, Sigur Ros, Transatlantic, The Gourishankar, Kansas, Devin Townsend, Gazpacho, The Flower Kings, and Riverside.

Now, if you want prog metal, how about Mastodon, Opeth, Symphony X and Liquid Tension Experiment?

Well if I extended my prog list of favorites Opeth and Symphony X would defenitely have been on it. I've heard of Mastodon, but have never checked them out and I've never heard of Liquid Tension Experiment. I'll be sure to give them both a listen.

Mastodon's a bit harsher and their sound is kind of a bizarre mix of the stuff Dream Theater plays and sludge metal. It kicks ass.

Liquid Tension Experiment is more or less Dream Theater if they were an instrumental jam band. The only two members of Dream Theater that aren't in LTE are John Myung, who Portnoy did not invite in favor of King Crimson's Tony Levin, and James LaBrie, who wasn't invited because the project was meant as an instrumental project. At the time, however, Portnoy and Petrucci were the only Dream Theater members in LTE, but Rudess joined DT when they needed a keyboardist.

+1

The Police were good too, although I don't know if you can really call them rock. Definitely The Power Station though.

Just kidding I'm not just a rock person. In a sense, I like all types of music in some way. But, yeah, rock is my favorite. Kudos for starting this thread man

Maria Mena - I was Made

A nice Acoustic version of Kiss Classic

I was Made for Lovin You

Tonight I wanna give it all to you
In the darkness
There's so much I wanna do
And tonight I wanna lay it at your feet
'Cause girl, I was made for you
And girl, you were made for me

I was made for loving you, baby
You were made for loving me
And I can't get enough of you, baby
Can you get enough of me

Tonight I wanna see it in your eyes
Feel the magic
There's something that drives me wild
And tonight, we're gonna make it all come true
'Cause girl, you were made for me
And girl, I was made for you

I was made for lovin' you, baby
You were made for lovin' me
And I can give it all to you, baby
Can you give it all to me

I was made
You were made
And I can't get enough
No I can't get enough...

Three Days Grace - Lost In You

Three Days Grace - Lost In You

I always knew that you would come back to get me
And you always knew that it wouldn't be easy
To go back to the start to see where it all began
Or end up at the bottom to watch how it all ends

I remember when I said I'm nothing without you
Somehow I found a way to get lost in you

Let me inside, let me get close to you
Change your mind I'll get lost if you want me to
Somehow I found a way to get lost in you

You always thought that I left myself open
But you didn't know I was already broken
I told myself that it wouldn't be so bad
But pulling away you took everything I had

I remember when I said I'm nothing without you
I'm nothing without you

The pain of it all, the rise and the fall
I see it all in you
Now every day I find myself saying
I want to get lost in you, I'm nothing without you

Somehow I found a way to get lost in you
Let me inside, let me get close to you
Change your mind I'll get lost if you want me to

Somehow I found a way to get lost in you
A way to get lost in you

Classic rock stuff like Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, and the like. I currently listen to all sorts of music though.

Got weaned from grunge (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden), punk (Green Day), alternative (Toad the Wet Sprocket) though. Then some metal (Metallica, Pantera) when I joined a band. After that, some more grunge, metal, alternative, and classic rock depending on the band I was in at the time.
