I was laughing at some of the stuff Kawahara wrote in Chapter 2 about politics and the military. Clancy's not high art but he's better than what Kawahara had in Chapter 2.

Kawahara is better at the stuff than most light novel authors, but that bar isn't all that high.

Good chapter despite the flaws. RL Asuna has really grown from the shrinking violet of pre-Aincrad days.

Thanks for the translation!

I guess this could derail the discussion quite a lot, but I do wonder what parts you find so strange? I didn't find it very in depth, but that also means it didn't step that far away from common knowledge.

He's talking about what happens in the game. Doesn't say one way or another about reality, though I'm rather sure it won't happen in reality. Apart from plot armor, he's currently comatose on a bed, so there's no point in cutting his arm off.

Damnit I wanted to watch it! XD

Back to stuff, is the ME version of Rondo of the Transient Sword or SS version supposed to really be different? I'm kind researching different <<Sword Skills>> and their details, but the quest for <<Martial Arts>> seems to strike me as... quite odd, as always.

I'm more interested at the Monochrome Concerto rather than the Rondo of Transient Sword. But yeah I thought I saw Kirito using a martial arts skill once though

Well at least it isn't odder than Baka-Tsuki's Filipino translation.

I was like: wtf? a Filipino translation. Do Filipinos need that in the first place?

... then I was like...

Maybe I could join....

I can't remember where this was, unfortunately - GGO maybe - but he definitely used a martial arts move once during a fight.

Maybe it was in the Vol.3, when he guarded against the lance attack of the Salamanders? If I remember right, Lyfa said she never saw something like that in ALO, implying it was some SAO skill Kirito used.

There's also when he takes down Cradil by using a knife hand move - it's noted that he's got a high stat for his Unarmed skill.

I think vol1 has two mentions of it (just started re-reading it recently). Kirito does a shoulder tackle type move vs. something that required a decent unarmed skill, and the move Wild Goose mentioned that killed Cradil.

Early Characters (ME2) lists the 12 equipped skills Kirito has as at the end of SAO: One Hand Sword, Dual Blades, Sword Throw, Parry, Recovery in Combat, Enemy Scan, Tracking, Hiding, Night Vision, Extended Weight Limit, Sprint, Fishing.

It's likely Kirito ditched his unarmed skill to pick up Fishing after he and Asuna were married, so it wouldn't be mentioned in ME2. It's also possible the SAO system allows unequipped skills to be retained, so Kirito just swapped it for something with more meaningful memories. We can always hope SAO: Progressors will touch upon some of the game world mechanics.

I found politics, history, and the military parts from Chrystheight's speech and following discussion to be a mix of facts with a large amount of fiction and wish fulfillment. You wouldn't notice it unless you were a big history/politics/military buff and creative license with the info-dumps is common in sci-fi. I simply found it more amusing than anything else.

That's the one I was thinking of, thanks for remembering it.

A little question: is Unarmed skill different from Martial Arts? Or could it be something like an inferior version...?
