So I get the feeling this is a series that's more popular than it is loved. And given that the first two episodes are exposition fests that are still hard to understand without reading the books, I don't see it becoming a mega-hit the way SAO did.
This Light Novel is Amazing!) is an annual light novel guide book published by Takarajimasha. The guide book publishes a list of the top ten most popular light novels and their characters according to readers polled on the Internet.

Readers polled on internet doesn't sound very professional.

Oh please, I am not talking about the most financially lucrative path the studio could take. Save that sales goon talk for somewhere else, I'm not a business executive and am not pretending to be.

I'm saying that Madhouse has a brand and I as a fan would not want to see that brand change in any significant way. They've historically been one of my favorite studios, and I'd like it to stay that way. This is simply an opinion on the content they produce.

It's more complicated than that. The list averages three different surveys together -- HP (Internet poll), Collaborators (authors and publishing industry professionals), and Monitors (a focus group of people who read a high volume of light novels each year). There's a detailed discussion of the 2014 list in the manga forum, including breakdowns of how different books did in each category. Mahouka was weak across the board. I don't see this becoming a mega-hit the way some people think it will.

Madhouse made shows like Strawberry Panic, Di Gi Charat, Maid Guy, Highschool of the Dead and Sakura Taisen. Their offer is more diverse than our memory filter would like to believe.

What they really need is a reliable money maker like Sunrise have with Gundam.

Yeah it's not like they don't branch out. I don't care about that. But if what they produce every season ends up becoming just light novels then I'll start getting worried.

I think Madhouse had a good thing going with Hunter x Hunter, unfortunately because it got moved to a late night slot (Due to dark content I guess?) and the fact that Togashi doesn't get up and write more chapters for over a year or two now, that's about to disappear soon.

Although Chihayafuru didn't have remarkable sales (they were ok), it did help increase the manga sales by a lot (the numbers definitely jumped up in a big way after the anime). So that was pretty good too I think.

Just like how kagerou didn't become a mega hit even though it was #41??? Oh wait.... Its kind of hard to trust it with something like that out there you know.

I don't see an animation studio as a brand per se. They're just companies that animate stuff, practically speaking. It relieves me of the frustration if ever that studio doesn't is or unable to maintain its image.

Still, I expect low five-digit sales average for Mahouka. I feel that the series may end up the way Toaru Majutsu no Index was several years ago, more or less.

I don't know if brand is a good description, but to say animation companies just "animate" stuff is underselling them. It makes sense if you are a mercenary animation company like A-1 Pictures or J.C. Staff, but some studios do have an image or common theme they often bring out. Like Sunrise with mechas, Kyoani with their particular style of lighthearted moe/comedy, Shaft with their bizzare avant garde artsyle or PA Works with their distinctive scenery porn backgrounds and tone. Madhouse I associate with "darker" and more "seinen" material. However, all of the above studios (with the exception of Kyoani on the whole) have branched and experimented with different themes, styles and content. Sunrise and Madhouse for example are big studios with multiple branches, but although you can't pinpoint and say they stick to a single image, there are things you can describe them as that forms an image of what they are.

Noitamina a long time ago use to have the image of presenting more "live-action" josei type material as they doubled up with the tv drama crowd. After that they had an experimental/arthouse stage. Now they seem to have no distinctive image and all it largely shows is whether Fuji TV funds a portion of the series or not, which is why you can see a lot of people complaining about the block these days.

I think it's generally agreed that the content had nothing to do with the move - they showed plenty of edgy stuff at 10 AM on Sunday. The issue is much more likely that the timeslot was quite expensive, and for a franchise that had no new manga to promote, no new theatrical film on the horizon, and minimal merchandising sales H x H simply couldn't justify its place in that timeslot any longer. If you have no means of generating revenue you're not likely to stay in a slot like that forever.

Pocari_Sweat: I did associate Madhouse with projects dealing with Marvel once, as well as the anime adaptation of Devil May Cry. I stopped doing associations when Gainax after having its core talents migrated to Trigger and other companies, screwed up with C3-Bu and experienced having another flop to their record.

I realized that tagging a studio for what it's good at will only make their non-trademark works (like KyoAni's Kyoukai no Kanata) stick out like a sore thumb, especially when it disappoints many.

On the topic of Hunter x Hunter, we all know that Togashi is notorious for having hiatuses, which in turn hurts the pace of production in the side of Madhouse.

For roughly a decade anyway. Madhouse didn't really pursue auteur anime until the late 90s, so it's actually a recent part of their history as opposed to the reason for their existence. In some sense, they've gone back to their old ways, even if the content has changed.

In this business, any mission or brand identity tends to be temporary.
