Perhaps it just takes a very long time for the programs to be compiled... even though the process of "building" a Satchii should make it only a program for they don't need to take actual building materials and construct it... the actual program is probably really huge or something and if they only have back-ups of it somewhere it probably takes time to get them into working order, perhaps. And maybe the developers of Satchii's programs charge a lot for each package like Photoshop (I just had a strange image of a huge Photoshop packaging zooming down the road and aiming a beam of Hue/Saturation and Levels at an unsuspecting person in front causing him to turn green and yellow and disgustingly bright... hey, they could warp reality with Mesh Only CS and above though!)

I'm sure whatever agreement they have with the developer of the Satchii program, it includes disaster-recovery protocols. As in "destruction of program by malicious hacker".

I'm going with Wao on the idea that it simply costs a ton of money to deploy a program as sophisticated as Searchmaton into augmented reality space. You can see how the kids in the show have to pay to repair their damaged personal data whenever they get attacked. I'm guessing that if they kept a backup of all their stuff on a physical medium, they'd still have to pay to re-upload it. That's how it works in (AFAIK) Second Life -- like, let's say if it were possible to maliciously destroy a building along with all the textures and scripts and other assets related to it, you (the land-owner) would have to pay money to Linden Labs to re-upload several of those assets back into the virtual world of SL.

...So with a busted Searchmaton sitting in the lab, you probably have to spend time to assess the damage (labor costs, $$$) and decide which assets have to be re-uploaded (upload/deployment fee, $$$), and maybe re-configure Searchmaton much like a fresh install of Windows or whatever to work with the virtual environment properly (more labor costs, $$$). This all assumes that they don't control their own servers though, otherwise they would be like paying themselves to redeploy their own backups on their own network.

Regardless, in all likelihood we're just making up some sh-t in order to justify an aspect of the series that wasn't meant to be looked at so deeply. All we know for certain about the rules of the game is: repairing damaged data costs a lot of money -- for kids, and for the Daikoku Searchmaton admins

it seems that getting too close to "the other side" in general will induce a desynch. I don't think an illegal can just hop out of "the other side" and arbitrarily grab people's avatars right out of their bodies in regular space -- I think it was that The Other Side's space had already sufficiently penetrated the space of Kyouko's room in order to allow a desynch to occur.

Who knows though -- I'm only vaguely confident of everything I've hypothesized

Just watched ep19.

I'm glad Kyoko was saved, but things look even worse.
The illegal penetrating the wall reminded me so much of Silent Hill 4.

I watched 19 myself, and while the production values were very solid as usual - the drawings and backgrounds seemed a bit better than usual, something about it just didn't hit me exactly. While the integration of story elements was fantastic and just when you thought you figured everything out they introduced another bit that had actually been there all this while and didn't noticed... it's not like I felt goosebumps or got very scared by this episode although it was clearly in a more horror sort of vein (I don't think this counts as a spoiler either, the last few episodes have been veering in that direction anyway)

Perhaps it was the directing or the dialogue or something but the only part that surprised me was when Yasako just appeared behind Fumie from the backdoor. Other than that, I was more curious than scared about anything because, perhaps, the illegals were too reminiscent of cliche zombies in the way they walked... although the way they went "choudai choudai" (give me, give me) reminded me of those people-turned-ravens at the end of Princess Tutu.

It really reminded me of a game though. I don't know which one. Biohazard? It's really tying everything together though, from the torii to summer festivals... so behind the happy sweet summer festival in episode 8, there is actually a ghostly one that nearly lured Kyoko in. And that hidden passageway in Megabaa's room - it's a plot point, I think, how the modern house was actually added onto Megabaa's one and that's why hers is so different and old-looking. I love the very visual idea of there being a limited space inside a house, yet with the capabilities of dennou space there is a never-ending passageway to The Other Side inside one room. And for extra quirkiness a lone streetlamp sits there...

Which reminds me about how light and dark play within the dennou world as well. Aside from previously discussed mechanisms with relation to episode 13 and the dinosaur illegal, it should be considered that in the dark, that's when your perception fails and your imagination takes over. It can also be when your physical perception fails and the dennou world can take over.

Perhaps the use of "evening" as a metaphor for what people see in the dennou world isn't just restricted to aesthetics, who knows.

Oh yeah, and the real hero of the episode had to be Densuke I liked also how when dennou communications failed, the ol' analog phone (and the type from the 60s no less) came to the rescue. Even if this show may show signs (IMO) of being a little weak in direction/scriptwriting in some episodes, the way themes weave through everything is flawless.

I wish it didn't end on a cliffhanger though. Sort of cliffhanger.

Oh but next episode we get to see Tamako in her schooldays? So we finally see what happened 4 years ago? BRING IT O.... oh damn, do we have to wait 1 week again?

Have just watched episode 19, and the visuals were great! However, I did find it kinda irritating at some parts:

* This episode seemed kinda slow-paced for the situation they're in
* Fumie's strong denial (... maybe this is hinting at something in Fumie's past?...)
* Yasako's lack-of urgency, even though her sis is a black shade with "NO DATA"

Oh well... people would act differently in different situations, so I'm not one to judge. Nice episode, btw.

Can't wait for next week.

Fumie's fear of scary stories has been known since ep9. Her brain must be shutting down from outright fear in the situation.

After the Coil (black) tag was applied to Kyoko's dennou-body, doesn't the way it crystalises and flies back to her physical body look just like how the Kirabug flew to Isako?
There's been some speculation that humanoid Illegals may be the remains of dennou-bodies seperated from their users. But, there'd have to be a lot of people in comas for the number of them to be in Yasako's place...
With what Kyoko saw when she was seperated, Yasako almost certainly met "4423" in the same obsolete space. But was she still in it when she met the Illegal hiding behind the shrine? The Illegals tried to disguise the area, but kept the stairs and the Torii gates. It must be fixed somehow.

This show just goes from strength to strength!

I'm watching episode 19 right now and this is killing me...

When you folks saw it, did you notice massive noise levels? I cannot figure it out whether it's deliberate SFX or just a video compression artefact. The raw I'm watching is high-definition capture, so why the hell would there be such huge artefacts?

I can't make a screenshot of it, since it doesn't really come out on still images, but when I was watching Haraken/Isako scene, I started noticing that strange picture noise.

WTF? Am I am getting a bit too crazy here?

- The episode totally played like Shaun of the Dead. Zombie Apocalypse!
- I really liked stoned Kyoko. That part of the episode had an eerie Alice in Wonderland feeling.
- Did you notice that when Kyoko stumbled when running from Illegals, metabugs sprang from her feet?

I thought it was only when she fell down and metabugs sort of sprang out on the floor. But yeah, I guess the whole place is built off metabugs but it's "flimsy" so the data can degenrate into bugs just like that.

Episode 19 was terrifying! What happened to whole-some non-scary stuff? Gotta love Densuke and Kyoko really (I was so afraid that she would actually eat the candy apple)

I noticed the 'metabug' at Kyoko's feet as well - thought they were her teeth at first though :P

I really liked the touch of the old-style phone as well, just had to laugh at the conversation between mega-baa and Fumie though! The 10p coin was used up!

And since I'm writing in mono-school grade sentences: Haraken is annoying me a little >_< I know I shouldn't say this but argh. Nekome is evil EVIL I SAY! And agreed with Wao - seems that we get to see Tamako from 4 years ago in the next episode, although I have to admit I'm much more interested in what happened 'one year ago'... that Isako was referring to.

Those black illegals' scare the heck of out of me though!

p/s: I wish Yasako hadn't wasted that bunch of meta-tags on the illegal when she first picked up the batch! Also, there must be an art to throwing meta tags, since they are technically... paper? yet they have a strange resistance to wind when thrown by e.g. Fumie

WAAAAAAAH THIS EPISODE WAS TOO THRILLING FOR ME TO ENJOY WITHOUT TYPING IT IN CAPS

I can't believe it's still at episode 20, that was like awesome on "penultimate episode level". WTF. The animation, and the the the the tension! Last week may have not moved me but I was literally waving my hands at the monitor this week. Holy shit.

Geez, I don't know whether I'm overreacting or what but this episode really had me there. Out of all the post-episode 12 episodes this has to be the best, I'm sure... but how on earth are they going to tie everything up?

Nekome was looking pretty serious there at the end but he's starting to appear more and more like a plot device than a real character until we find out more about 4 years ago - now we know that it was Tamako who had actually opened a keyhole back then and caused many kids to feel faint, and if it wasn't for Megabaa she wouldn't have been able to close it (it was a lot easier for her back then because there was a lot of old space around). What the hell does he mean "...Before the world gets destroyed." I mean isn't that a bit too wide? I dunno, who the hell was he talking to anyway?! Argh I can't wait an entire week for this...

Also, dude if you were waiting for Satchii to become uber-cool THIS IS THE EPISODE. I mean Tamako literally upgraded one of them to become Evil-Badass-Satchii with six Kyuu-chans and an angry face. But it was so thrilling when they were racing against time to get Haraken out of the old space (as much as I like him I think I could almost scoff him for having caused so much trouble by going in there just to see Kanna!) and get Yasako out as well, before the Level 3 Formatting occured... and oh, IN B4 RAMIEL
Seriously it was so cool, and you really felt the seriousness of the situation - for a moment there I almost thought Yasako really wouldn't get out of the old space. The design of the city-wide formatting machine was really creative; it's a bunch of cubes that combine in various different ways to provide different levels of beams... and Tamako's Kyuu-chans were fighting them off and it was so cool, but the best part was that in the end even Isako's mojos were called in to fend them off just as Yasako was making her last spurt before getting out. Awesome. And they died ;_; Even Pochi I think completely died, but thankfully Tamako and co. were completely saved from being formatted because the other Satchii she had with her, being a Megamas product, couldn't get formatted by the cubes and it protected them all. Aw man, between this and Satchii so amusingly squashing itself through corridors I just can't hate the thing...

But even on the grade-school-crush side there was such a lovely scene - Yasako could hear what Kanna was trying to say when Haraken was there, and to be honest it was kind of boring... I mean the title of the episode is "Kanna and Yasako", you'd expect her to say something really important but it was pretty much "Thank you for everything and I enjoyed being with you but I can't stay with you any longer" sort of. Meh. Of course, the thing is Kanna also mentioned that she liked Haraken (and through Yasako! Aw), and Haraken just had to blurt out that he likes her too... but anyway Yasako ended up transferring an angou off Isako (which she had to use her last Kirabug for...) onto Haraken, and as he was disappearing back into normal space, where he wouldn't be able to reply to Yasako (or even hear her entirely perhaps), she confessed right back to him
Soooooo cute, I know, but it was actually kinda emotionally touching the way they did it. Yasako really picked a great moment, and if this episode didn't make ehr look like a main character then nothing will. :')

They also mentioned something about how the Illegal (or Illegals?) that came in through the keyhole are called Nuru (actually this should be romanised as "Null" although the pronunciation is different from English - oh, and "ga!" to anyone who knows) and they're probably the oldest Illegal there...? If Megabaa was referring to that Illegal potentially being the one who took away Kyoko then my Grandfather = Kyoko-stealing Illegal theory gets smashed, dammit. But I'm not clear. I must watch this again. Yeah baby!

Oh maaaaan, I can't wait for next week at all. How will everything get tied up? How?! I need somewhere to spasm.

Furthermore, even more new scenes briefly flashed out when she was touched by an Illegal this episode. There's something about a crushed bicycle...? Don't tell me... she died once, and this is all... no wait. Uh. What. Thinking too much, yes? Clarification - the way she said it it could be someone/thing else, perhaps even Densuke. After all in the novel Densuke was originally a live dog. Interestingly enough there is an omake scene in the ep 1 storyboard that was never animated - Yasako first bumped into Isako while looking for Densuke and getting scared by a real dog barking at her; she mentions that she was always scared of them or something like that.

Also, we finally got a mention of what the title means: it's the name of the phenomenon where 'you bring together a number of conditions and a person's real and cyber-bodies will separate'.

Damn, so I was wrong... But nonetheless, episode 20 was amazing.

The visuals... omg... the visuals... breathtaking! And Yasako was WOW! For the FIRST time, she kicked ass!!!! Go Yasako!!!

It was kinda sad for Haraken and Kanna though. It brings forth a lot of questions, eg, will Kanna be forever stuck in the virtual world? Or was she finally released, as in... programming terms, "Destroyed" or "Collected" after she finally got her message to Haraken. Pretty sad to think about it.

I really hope the series will continue to give Yasako a bigger part. Heck, wouldn't be too surprised if they say that she's Michiko (virtual being) in Yasako's (physical) body... and that the real Yasako was lost a long time ago... or whatever. Doesn't matter, I've seen what they've throwed at me so far, and I loved them all.

So I guess the arc about Kanna is done now (or isn't it?), and we can hopefully move on to 4423 and Yasako. Fingers crossed!!!

I don't think anyone's translating the novels (although I have (rather awkawardly, I now realise) translated just the prologue here - be reminded a lot of things are different in the novel), and I have no idea where you can buy them on their own without expensive shipping. Lemme tell you that getting it off Amazon is ridiculous unless you want to add in a lot of other purchases. You probably know that though...
