I feel like the only show where that really happened was Gundam Seed. It is possible to have character designs that appeal to fujoshi or otaku or whatever and still have them work as characters in their own right though. IMO 00 did it just fine.

Nonsense, SEED's characters work as characters irrespective of their looks. Even more so considering SEED has similar facial designs from one character to another.

But seriously, good looking characters takes nothing away from the story. That said, Reconguista's character design has that "old" feel to me, which I wouldn't necessarily use the word "pretty" to describe.
