It's better than most, but it's far from infallible. He's made mistakes. And that's not even touching the fact he's still stuck in B-class.

We don't really know how good his metrics are. Not enough of an edge to make him win, anyway.

She's passionate about the subject, that's all. It doesn't make her a genius. Go to a comic shop and ask around - I'm sure you'll find someone who knows as much about Spider-Man than she does about the Hundred Poets.

Yes, I think she clearly emphasized the difference in the queen match, the two characters who faced each other were the exemplification of talent/genius versus doing-your-best. Where the former overpowered the latter, twice. That's where I felt the line I was speaking before was exposed the most. In a corner the winning genius, alone, and in the other corner the losing one, supported by all her club.
And I think Chihaya is swaying just in the middle. And even if I had the feeling that she will go to the genius-side sooner or later (or it's just that I'd find it interesting), on the other hand definitely that doesn't seem to be in the intentions of the author. So, for now I have no clues.

Taichi & Team Mizusawa do illustrate the value of hard work and self-improvement, but with the proviso you start with some exceptional ability.
On this aspect I agree with Anh_Minh, both Tsutomu and Kana have their abilities and/or interests, but nothing outstanding. And their are asocial not because they want to or due to some peculiarity of them, but more like because they are subjected to it.
Taichi is more debatable, I could say that his memory skills are useless if related to Karuta. But I still remember when he said to Tsutomu, to convince him joining the club, that he preferred someone who sweats on the tatami instead of a genius. So to me it's like the author made clear that Taichi had really no skills for Karuta. And the show basically confirmed that, so far. Btw, I remember that line because that's where he won me over
So even if i disagree on some argumentation I can agree that maybe the goal for Team Mizusawa / Chihaya is winning remaining as and who they are.

As far as the effort/genius dichotomy, can it really be concluded yet that the geniuses haven't also expended great effort themselves? At least, if you take the example of the most prominent players we are familiar with (such as Arata, Chihaya, Shinobu, Arata's grandpa maybe), I don't think you could deny that they have spent enough time "sweating on the tatami".

If you accept the reality that talent/natural aptitude exists. And affix on also the believable moral that victory requires effort. Then the natural conclusion should be that the strong/the victors will be those who possess/have put in both, i.e. "geniuses that try hard". From a logical standpoint, it seems inevitable that such existences would represent an impassible wall, from the perspective of other players.

Where do you go from there? Haha, well, I don't know. If we accept that only abnormal creatures like Shinobu or Chihaya might reach the pinnacle of karuta, then where does that put everyone else? As far as communicating the appeal of karuta in a widespread sense, I rather doubt that being fixated on absolute victory is a good vehicle. In the end, the story probably should communicate that becoming Meijin or Queen is not everything, that something deeper which lies within karuta itself is more valuable than that.

The great inner growth within Taichi, Tsutomu, Sumire, etc. as a result of karuta is wonderful to see in itself. Just any random person's inner talent might not be enough to take them to the top of karuta, but there should be enough there that, if they want to and put effort into it, they can become strong. I think having been through that process should be enough for any person to take pride in.

It's talent + effort + love for the game.
I would say that their strong love for the game allows them to communicate at a higher (read: different) level, which is why only the top level players understand each other, can recognise what is actually happening, and can be affected by their "aura" (yes, it sounds like a shonen action show in disguise).

How do you beat that?
Well, in true shonen action show style probably talent + effort + love for the game + friendship power.

I'm not sure Shinobu really loves the game. It's just something she does so her mother doesn't nag.

Ok, maybe the game aspect might be debatable, but she clearly loves the cards (or is it the cards love her?).
In any case, the fact that she found all 100 cards after a bunch of punks hid the cards from her, and Chihaya points out the way she grabs the cards in a non-violent manner is proof of that.

I think it's important to remember that karuta rewards physical abilities as well as mental ones, particularly reflexes. We've seen throughout that Chihaya's quickness is one of her most effective talents. Tsutomu just doesn't possess that type of skill; his talents lie elsewhere. Chihaya expressed her desire to come back to coach the team after she graduates. If I were her, I'd make sure they hire Tsutomu as well if he's interested. Together they would make Mizusawa a formidable contender in the league.

Anyone from Australia? Apparently Siren Visual licensed the first season (DVD Only though).

I would be lying if I said I wasn't insanely jealous. Might have to see about importing this (although I still have to import Dennou Coil as well).

You'll need a "region-free" DVD player to watch discs from Region 4. (There are ways to change the region on the DVD drives in computers, but you have to be careful not to switch regions more than maximum allowed five times.)

I would have bought Dennou Coil already had it been released on Blu-ray, but I can't bring myself to spend $100 on a DVD release of a show that was originally produced in 720p. I did buy the excellent soundtrack CD (one of my all-time favorites) when Coil was released as a method of support. It's quite a bit cheaper now than it was then, too.

Episode 4

I loled so hard when all those towels were thrown at him. Because judging from the passion of the people who threw them, I imagined those towels being something entirely different.

How many fangirls does Taichi have?

Fantastic episode, you know I kept complaining about the pacing in the past three episodes and I thought this episode's pacing was perfect, it felt like I was watching a first season episode. The funny thing is the number of adapted manga chapters is the same as in the previous episodes (two if anyone is curious).

Not sure what moment of the episode I loved most, so many good ones.

Wonder what Arata's request is, maybe moving back to Tokyo. Lol Taichi has horrible luck. Though, he really tends to over think things and just drive himself into a deeper hole. Good thing he was able to pull out the win. Lol 5 towels thrown at him before he could even finish asking. Chihaya's face was perfect at that moment. Liked how Sumire tried to help and scout out Hokuo. So its a rematch for the finals. Honestly this ep felt like the first season as i had no idea how the ep finished so fast.

And we are back to our regular programming of Taichifuru. That was a great episode for him. We finally found out why he hasn't made class A yet despite having the necessary skills: he has horrible luck. Good luck is about the only thing he lacks. He has everything else: looks, brains, talent, wealth, popularity. No wonder all the boys are jealous of him.

I'm glad he was able to understand Harada's words and win his match. This will boost his confidence, something he needed after experiencing so many losses.

Sumire is more perceptive than I thought. She's noticed Taichi is helplessly in love with Chihaya. Maybe it's just that obvious? Even Tsuboguchi knew all about it and even used that against them (a pretty smart move, Taichi never realized his true intentions). I think Sumire is overestimating Chihaya, but she does need to be on her toes. While Chihaya is completely clueless about romance, she is also very unpredictable, and that makes her a tough opponent. Anyway, I was happy to see Sumire make an effort to support the team by taking her eyes off Taichi for a second and watching their rivals play. She has already grown a lot since the first episode.

I totally expected to see some panties mixed in there (they would have been Kana-chan's mother's, of course)

The show is definitely at its best when it focus on Taichi. Also, I'm liking Sumire more and more. She could be my favorite female character in the show, though I like Kana a lot as well.

Looking forwards to the next episode.

I just love Kana's mum Great episode anyways. Really, Taichi needs confidence (and a bit of luck, even if I think that's not something so relevant).
I lolled hard too at the towel scene, even the Empress has thrown one, his popularity has no limits

So, Chihaya pays attention even to Taichi when it really matters (losing a karuta match), just to drop it a second later
On a side note, fair idea switching readers each round.

This was a great episode. The series really is at its best when it focuses on the intensity of the matches.

As for the Arata at the beginning, it looks like it will finally happen. Arata requesting something from his parents if he wins the high school championship? It has got to be moving back to Tokyo so he can be with Chihaya and Taichi. At that point in the story, the romance aspect will finally be pushed forward.

I loved towel scene as well as the fact that Chihaya jumped half way through to push the towel towards Taichi was huge smile

It is a bit enviable how she manages to concentrate on karuta and other people around her at the same time.

Would she be wearing any? A traditionalist like her?

Taichi has so many people rooting for him. All females, too, the bastard.
