IIRC it's pretty rare for a character to directly beat a character from the same preliminary group that did better. I was speaking more of counts of total votes in the prelims isn't an indication of strength such that a character that got more votes in the prelims wouldn't necessary beat a character that got less votes in the prelims if they were in the same round given that they weren't in the same prelim group. Within prelim groups, it's pretty easy to gauge strength.

IMO, preliminary rounds' results have only little to do with overall strength of the competitors. So many factors to be involved e.g. participants' awareness of earlier prelim. rounds or other participated characters.

I agree for the most part with this. I don't want to say it has "only little to do", but it's not a huge factor in the overall strength and performance. I think the numbers are important from round to round, but as you've said there are other factors involved.

I agree that voter participation along with matchups are important things to consider, and I believe those are major factors. Also, we should not forget faction voting, anti-faction voting and of course my favorite , strategic voting.

We can dissect competitors' strengths all we want, and that strikes up interesting discussions while many times getting us close to actual results. This is all what makes Saimoe fun, or any tournament; to see your favorites prevail, but also seeing the unexpected.
