I usually avoid idol-based types of shows/movies (may they be live-action, anime, or whatever) like the plague, but I saw people talking about this so I watched it...

And, honestly? It's not bad. In SOME ways it's so bad that it's good (or so bad that it's hilarious, and thus amusing me JUST enough for me to let things slide), but overall it has potential.

It's been said by several others, but it gives me vibes of Symphogear, Macross F, and Idolmaster all rolled up into one. It's like if the bad parts of Macross F and the good parts of Symphogear had a baby, while taking what I hate about Idolmaster and doing it in a more tolerable manner (awkward CGI is still awkward, tho).

Long story short, the little girl in me likes all the purdy sparklies and hearts everywhere along with the catchy jpop music and cool space/action elements. :3

Will continue to watch this. XD

This actually came into my mind while I was brainstorming an idea of sorts for fanart ocs.

In a brainstorming of an idea I had, I created another anti establishment group dedicated to ending the entertainment ban and help humanity preserve the rich musical culture it had lost. Known as the "Ace in The Rabbit Hole", the group consists of four former bandit groups who have risen up against the DES which they call reapers due to the insignias. There are Four Aspects which consists of each suit and represent a counterculture that AKB0048 failed to represent.

Spade: Ace of Blades - Rock and it's variant, Ace of Blades lives for vandalism and traditional rock and roll. When they are not rocking out, they are seen wrecking havoc in the industrial areas of the galaxy. They are the most active in opposing the DES and can cause massive amounts of headaches to every side in the struggle for freedom.

Hearts: Heartbreaker - R&B and Jazz, the Heartbreakers is the most supportive of AKB0048. They sing love songs and often make blatant attempts to hit on the idol group much to the dismay of the latter as there is a forbidden fruit factor to them. The group is probably more interested in getting into the bedrooms of an idol rather than fighting the good fight but given AKB0048's influence, it is better off that way. They rely on charming idols and cloak and dagger assassinations to get their job done.

Clubs: Club 9 - Hip Hop and it's subcultures that isn't related to Heartbreaker belongs to Club 9's territory. Born in the worst parts of DGTS society as the lowest class. They also saw the most amount of suffering caused by Reaper Raids as Club 9 operate quite often in their area. Some are similar to Zapistas and wishes to non violently oppose the DES through bombing the area with tags and graffiti which mocks the incompetance of DES and often says "DONT FEAR THE REAPER! SING!". Others prefer a more violent sporadic attacks on the DES rather than peaceful approach.

Diamonds: Diamond Dust - Electronica, techno, anything that you can use a synthesizer Diamond Dust has it handled. They are like a Cyberpunk group. The group's followers have heavy traces of augmentation to them so they either fight or play music better using their augs. They often act as the headmasters of the concerts and parties to raise the spirits of the people. Their approach to DES is information warfare, leaking out information on possible attacks on entertainment venues and providing people with escape options in case DES arrives.

Compared to the AKB0048, DES shows NO mercy towards the Ace group. Anyone asssociated with them is kill on sight and there is never an ultimatum to surrender. Capturing even one will have the DES trooper heavily reprimanded by the DGTS. The feeling is mutual for the ACEs and often entertainment venues hosted by them turn into bloodbaths.

Sorry if I accidentally hijacked the topic, but AKB0048 is damn interesting. It will not have the true appeal of something say Idolmaster or LoveLive but it is still interesting to see where tehy will go.

Very interesting concepts.

The one movie that kept popping in my mind as I watched was Swing Kids, in which the Nazis went about trying to crush the youth culture circled around swing and jazz, called Swingjugend.

There was also the Edelweiss Pirates, who were most aggressive in rebelling against Hitler, but even after WWII, the Allies had a hard time with them as they weren't much of a "true" resistance movement.

Another movement that was remotely associated with the Swing Kids was the White Rose, who tried to defy the Nazi regime, and despite the deaths of its members, they became Germany's favorite heroes.

BTW, it would be appropriate to call the DES squads as Stormtroopers.

So Flying Get is now the name of a ship? I nearly laughed out loud when the lady said she was going to dispatch the Flying Get. This show straddles the line between incredulity, cheesiness, and suspension of disbelief.

Also... Heavy Rotation gives you super strength now? Because the word "HEAVY" is in the title?

AKB power rangers? omg.

But nonetheless, it was a fun romp. It's good how they touched on the harsh reality of AKB. The majority of people who pass an audition end up a "research student" that never actually sees the light of day. And even if you make it, you may end up turning into a porn star

Mayuyu is on one of the transformable platforms (which also serve as light fighters), so she was able to exfiltrate with the rest of the team.

Hehe, Flying Get's gonna be the name, and it'll be stuck onto the mothership, just like Macross (the name that was chosen for Alien Starship One that was rebuilt on South Ataria Island).

The Kirara seem to be able to obtain positive energy from a full-fledged member, and thus able to perform unique functions such as spacefolding (does the Vajra's Fold Crystals ring a bell?), as well as boosting a member's physical strength.

As for the last bit, that was sad but true: mirroring Perfect Blue's Mima Kirigoe, that graduated 1st-gen member made it her unfortunate decision to turn to AV possibly due to some money problems (she shouldn't been in the troupe in the first place because she apparently lacked the pluses -- including charisma and stage presence -- and the necessary skills which would've extended her career). But those were the rare exceptions, as most graduates (as I have said earlier) moved on to other things that didn't involve anything indecent.

First thing I thought after ep1: What the heck did I just watch?

Utterly bizarre, with a weird plot where idol singers are considered terrorists and entertainment is seen as worse than murder. And worse is the way all the girls have hearts in their hair and eyes. That's rarely a good sign in my experience.

However, it's not bad, and might be able to pull it off. Only time will tell whether this becomes a great show or, as someone else put it, so bad it's good.

I was heavily amused by that whole scene.

If this show keeps up this brand of the patently ludicrous, I think I'm going to enjoy it a lot. I've enjoyed the first two episodes, anyway.

But am I the only one getting Kuragehime flashbacks from the little glowing jellyfish creatures?

AKB0048 02 - A Journey To the Stars(☆)

"We heard there were people on this ship going to AKB0048 auditions. Come out with your hands up."

Anime is probably the only place one could hear a sentence like that and have it make perfect sense in context. I laughed a bit, but I'm enjoying this show in an unironic way. It's a soft sci-fi that relies on the strength of its characters, and those characters are already proving to be lovable. Sonata made the strongest impression, though I'll enjoy seeing Makoto's melodramatic posturing in the future, too. Chieri and Nagisa have that kind of NanoFate tension that people (like me) will probably read too much into, but that is the nature of being a fan. Spending an episode entirely on the journey was a nice breather (mostly), though I look forward to the actual idol stuff.

The previous generations, voiced by girls I actually am familiar with, were really awesome. Those floating stage performance things/miniature ships are some of the coolest technology I've seen. And cyborg Yukari Tamura... can't say I was expecting that. I'm finding myself with a lot to say about this show, which bodes well for the future.

The third episode will be, I'm sure, very breathtaking for the newcomers: I can see them arrive at Akibastar, a well-protected yet very vibrant refuge of a city, clean and beautiful, the only citadel where music and art comes alive and free.

They can't possibly do anything good with something that short and so many characters, I though it was going to be 2 cours.

It's split 2 cours (confirmed by some of the staff), though there's yet no indication as to when the second part will be broadcast.

I think the reason why Kirara followed Chieri but didn't glow and why it glow for Nagisa but none followed her was because they need each others to be at their full "idol aura" or w/e that mean.

Spoiler for A few more things I would be expecting... based on my readings of the spin-off manga: * Arrival at the Academy * The girls come to meet two more of their soon-to-be teammates * Another round of auditions, and more likely the candidate trainees would be accepted * Mariko reveals herself as the headmistress of the Academy, and other characters introduce themselves (most likely teachers and key personnel; maybe a ringer for Togasaki, the theater manager) * Acchan makes her appearance, the Center of the troupe * The Legacy members gives us a backstory about their formation and of their long history of struggle against the DGTO * There would be, initially, an uneasy relationship between cynical Chieri and idealistic Nagisa __________________
