That sounds like your local post office will do the customs clearance for you, and will charge you for that, in addition what the custom charges may be. That can happen here too, but that's completely optional, and you should be able to decline. In that case, you'd have to go to the Customs Office yourself, pay the taxes and pick up the package .. instead of it being delivered to your door.
But note, that's again, only in Finland. I don't know how they do things in Israel but it does sound like something like this .. Btw : FedEx will do the customs clearance for you, but does not charge. Next time, order with FedEx. FedEx has nothing to do with your local post office, as they are a courier service, so your post office can't charge you for anything.

Hmm, I don't recall being charged for any figyuu/toys I've ordered through EMS, but I'm also in Canada. But I'm pretty sure I got charged 20$ from customs for importing a PSP game from Japan. =w=;

Spoiler for Canadian example about how criminal the fees from UPS are:
I'm interested in if your country would censor any magazines. I remember reading somewhere in Malaysia? about a guy who imported stuff like Megami and while his package was opened for inspection, the person doing it censored it with black marker. But a lot of similar cases just look like the customs officer's personal bias. I went to Hawaii one year and nothing happened when we were clearing customs on the way back — Pretty sure I was reading a volume of D.N.Angel and my brother was reading Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo while the person questioned my parents.

Erf.... not everything about Canada is great (just like any other country, choose your pain ). I just pre-ordered the ALTER Ritsu and her drums... so once Mugi arrives and is later followed by Ritsu I'll have an entire band display to find a shelf for.
Also pre-ordered the MOVIC version of Azusa... damn, I always forget to keep an eye on cdjapan's figure pre-orders, so thanks to bloppyblue for pointing it out. I'll probably end up reselling some of my K-On! figures (probably the beach series and my least favorite "instrument playing" series) so if anyone missed out last year keep an eye on my signature. I post links there when I'm clearing shelf space of figures. Sigh, buy it all and keep only my favorites seems to be the way to play this game. edit: I notice that cdjapan is cutting prices... I bet the strong yen is hurting their sales quite a bit.

However, in your case, since it's a local post office ... Well, technically you should be just able to tell them that you don't want them to do it for you, and you will do it yourself ( Means => You go to the customs office yourself to pay, and pick up the package ). Not sure if I can do that but I definitely ain't paying this D: Also to Bananoha ; I think it's about luck whether your item gets inspected and you need to pay taxes. Though it may depend on country, but typically they only inspect heavy or large packages, while small ones go usually through ; though not always. Though my friend who lives in Israel too, said that they inspect every single package there, and if that's the case.. then Agito will have to pay taxes whenever he orders, whatever he orders and whatever shipping he uses.

Where is my re-release of Ritsu nendo! It's the only one I don't have on order. Though I'm sure that somewhere, a shop in Akihabara has one for a not obscene price.

It's just UPS sucks. FedEx hasn't been terribad to me yet. Quote:
However, on my first Amazon.co.jp order where I had no idea we even had customs taxes.... Pre-ordered a CD with other things, but Amazon didn't want to ship it 'til the CD released because it was so far ahead. So the CD alone came separately after the bigger package and I believe it was another 15$ on the Canadian end — 5$ ROD fee from FedEx and I think the rest was a combination of another FedEx fee and customs fee. Spoiler for Oh, I find my CBSA Postal Import Form for another order:
But anyway, yes, you'll always need to pay custom and duty fees in Canada, at least for certain items it seems. .... though I've sort of gotten away with it since friend was kind enough to mail some things, albeit in smaller packages, and I didn't get charged since it was "a gift". Two CDs were sent one time, too. (´・ω・`)

Anyhow I'm going to talk to them on Sunday, for now I don't have any other options. And in Israel I've seen some Megami magazines in the comics and manga store...

Yeah, "don't use UPS" is pretty well known among savvy Canadian online shoppers. Unfortunately, I suspect that a lot of people think the fees come from Canada Customs, since they don't bother separating the fees out on the bills they give.
I've always avoided using UPS because I know better, but my dad got hit with nearly $30 in their so called "customs brokerage fees" for an order that I remember being less that $100. DHL, who Rightstuf ships their Canadian orders through, also charges a customs brokerage fee but there's is only like $5 or something, and my orders are always worth $150+. Not sure about other companies. As for bringing stuff with sexual content into Canada, I don't have any experience myself but the experiences of people I've talked to suggest that it is highly dependent on the particular customs agent you get. I also wouldn't count on not having your stuff searched, I've had it happen and I'm not exactly a frequent online shopper.

Tbh from what I've read how it's in Canada, bring a Megami Magazine with lolis in it, in a slightly revealing clothes = Magazine ripped in pieces and who knows what kind of trouble you get yourself to o.o. Plus it's not like the custom agents can tell a different between an adult, and a loli when it comes to anime. If she has a flat chest = loli

I live in Canada (Toronto) and I don't remember any customs being that strict with anime stuff :S The worst that's happened to me was I had my samurai-handle umbrella taken in for check while being flown to Canada, and had to have it mailed back to me a week later.

That said, lolicon porn will definitely get you into trouble, and there's a whole bunch of other types of porn you could run into trouble with too, although from what I've heard this is pretty dependent on the Customs Officer you get.

Got the Mio figurine
My first figurine, fucking love it. Too bad I had to go past a lot of shit that went down, well I'll say it's worth it and regarding the money my dad will help me a bit with it, I have a great family.

lol dood you even got the bass? is it a fender (MiM) standard jazz bass? fender american jazz bass? fender squier jazz bass? or some imitation like SX Jazz bass?
i havnt received my Mio yet =|, i hope someone didnt jack it from my doorstep. she looks kinda crippled or stricken with polio. anyone have problems with Cospa products? I used a k-on necktie once and the back part where the ur suppose to slip the back of ur tie into broke >.> my mom sewed it back.. kinda. i also ordered a Mio tin clock and Azusa tin clock, but when I got it.. the face of the clock had abrasions (which i assume was caused by the cardboard which was suppose to protect the clock from shock damage) I'm very dissapointed =\. Its hard to take pictures of the damage to ask for a refund or some kinda action from the retail store because need the right angle and lighting. The scratches were hard to take a photo of and I only managed to take a photo of the Mio one *link* http://moemoedesu.com/Images/S6300570.JPG I dont think theres a protective film to take off.. i think
