Animation for Sister
I'm sure this comes up a lot...
anyways, my sister is vaguely interested in Japanese animation. Being a dude, I don't know much about girly shows. Things she likes: Card Captor Sakura Moon Phase Wing (Tsubasa) Reservoir Chronicles Avatar (yeah, I know it's not Japanese, but it's animation, and as long as she's watching animation, it doesn't matter) Heart Catch! Pre-Cure Sailor Moon (She has not seen R or S or anything) XXXholic (comic) Mei and the Butler (Mei-chan no Shitsuji) Ah My Goddess! Angelic Layer. Magiranger. Totally Spies! Ponyo Totoro ============================ So, I'm looking for more suggestions. Now keep in mind she's 12, so no sexual stuff please? She like the magical girl genre and light romance Last edited by TheRunba; 2010-07-12 at 20:02. |

Then Shugo Chara is just for her. The two seasons can be officially watched over on Crunchyroll, so now would be a better time then any to let her know about it.

I would recommend The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. I could also recommend Natsume's Book of Friends, and Studio Ghibli films such as Princess Mononoke, Whisper of the Heart, Spirited Away and The Cat Returns.

Princess Tutu and Umi no Monogatari. The two of them are, in my opinion, two of the best works in the magical girl genre. your sister should definitely check them out.
Kaleido Star and Aria (Animation, Natural, Origination). these two are family-friendly. your sister might like Kaleido Star; but I would also like to suggest ARIA because is one of my favorite shows. |

Natsume Yuujinchou, a very great relatively recent anime that happens to be perfectly friendly for all ages.
I also suggest Kare Kano and Kodomo no Omocha for romance/comedy anime she might like.

As for action shows, is there a limit to how much action you'd want to show her? Just asking before i mention a few shows.

Good suggestions so far, here's a few more:
Pretty Cure - long-running magical girl show now streamed by Funimation Tweeny Witches (much better than the annoying English title suggests); young girl falls off a building and is transported to a world where magic exists Windy Tales - middle-school girls discover that some humans and some cats can manipulate the wind Kemono no Sou-ja Erin - young girl wants to follow in her mother's footsteps and become a veternarian who cares for magical beasts; available here and also streamed at Crunchyroll - pre-screening through episode seven recommended for potentially disturbing dramatic content Moribito - same author as Erin; a spear-wielding female bodyguard becomes the protector of a young prince; less pricey versions exist at places like eBay; look for "As Seen on Adult Swim" on the box Daughter of Twenty Faces - young heiress becomes involved with a master thief; again pre-screen through episode six Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 - two kids cope with the aftermath of an earthquake; similar issues to Erin Cross Game - streaming at VIZ; now through episode 13 of 50; sweet romance about two teens who love baseball Chi's Sweet Home/New Address - second season streams at Crunchyroll; first season is fansubbed, but I can't tell you where; story about a young family and it's adopted kitty Higepiyo - another adopted pet story, though this one's more sophisticated; the animal is a chick with samurai aspirations Summer Wars - recent movie with a bit of romance and a lot of remarkable animations; about families and video gaming Hidamari Sketch - cute girls do cute things while attending an arts high school; not so edgy as Azumanga Daioh can be (that has a pervy male teacher and female teachers who like to drink); GA - Geijutsuka Art Design Class might also have some appeal Bit more mature - pre-screening suggested Shion no Ou - somewhat gory in a couple of episodes but mostly it's about a young girl striving to become a professional Shougi ("Japanese chess") player; most of the gore is in the first episode so you don't need to watch much to know if it's appropriate Noein - the main characters are all twelve but the story has various references to quantum physics; no gore or sex, just the occasional complex story School Rumble - hilarious school story about unrequited loves; a couple of sexual references (a boy who's fixated on cup sizes, for instance), but generally pretty tame Twelve Kingdoms - a high-school girl is suddenly whisked away to an ancient fantasy Asian empire; slow start but patience is greatly rewarded; somewhat gory at times Strong seconds for Natsume Yuujinchou and Dennou Coil
