Rpg's
Anyone agree that rpg's are getting worse and worse?
Stories are becomming uninteresting gameplay is getting worse and characters are rarely interesting enough to mention twice.......... It might have something to do with the succes of Final Fantasy that others started to go down that route also. Heh its funny though...... the crowd that the graphics draw usualy dont even like the games yet still buy the next final fantasy game....... still the most horrid experience was hearing this game would be so cool if they took out the boring talking moments. Heh maybe its just that the suikodun games killed me for anything less What do you guys think? |

Suikoden is the hight of the 'post-16-bit' RPGs. Almost everything since the advent of FFVII has been ... less than enthralling. It is not only the RPGs that are seeing this trend. I blame 3d graphics for most of this downfall. They are all like ... oooooo pretty pictures, and I was like ..... ooooo where is the story? The 3 suikoden games are in my eye the best RPGs to come out since the PSX was launched, but I could be wrong, there are still a few I haven't played. We need to see gameplay and story come back into the RPG world, as that is what it should be about. We should be seeing nothing less than what the suikodens have provided.
I still contend the best of the post-6 FF games was the DVDs with just the video from them. |

FF7, Chrono Cross, and Xenogears are the peak of RPGs for me. For some reason Suikoden 3, Grandia Xtreme, FFX and FFX-2 can't quite measure up anymore though I like some of them. Maybe because the bars have been raised by the first 3 I mentioned that I expect more now.

I don't know about console RPG's but for computer they're only getting better. Games like Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter, Morrowind, Fallout, Arcanum and Knights of the Old Republic are as good as they get.

FFX was good suikoden 3 was great other than that i havent seen any good RPG games on PS2 and x-box (i havent tried knights of the old republic yet). i got soo bored that i began replaying suikoden 1 and 2 and 3. hope they release suikoden 4, FFXII, starocean 3, and tales of destiny 2 soon

For me, Xenogears is the greatest game ever made out of any genre. The story is unlike anything else. I loved some of the new ps2 titles like FFX&X-2, Suikoden III, Shadow Hearts(great game, everyone should play it), Summoner II, Disgaea, and Kingdom Hearts. However, these great games have been too far and inbetween. Too many crappy sequels and games have been coming out. Grandia Xtreme, Dark Cloud 1&2, Legaia 2 and others have been crap, i didn't even want to play them past the 3 hours i gave them. Seeing and reading the people's thoughts say that too. I am really looking forward though to some of the newer rpg's headed our way; Suikoden IV, Star Ocean 3(loved it), FFXII, Dragon Quest VIII & V, Growlanser II & III, Front Mission 4, and Tales of Destiny 2.
There is Tales of Destiny(psx) 1996, Tales of Destiny II(psx)2001 which had nothing to do with Tales of Destiny. Now they are making a true sequel to Tales of Destiny and they are Calling it Tales of Destiny 2. A little confusing yes, but in Japan Tales of Destiny II was called something else(name escapes me now, have to look it up). |

The games aren't getting worse. Not at all. It's just that pleasing fans who've played almost every RPG out there is a near impossible task. Does anyone at all appreciate how difficult it must be to come up with a completely original story?
Maybe I'm just easily amused... I don't think games have gotten worse, but I know I was more easily impressed 5 years ago than I am now. It's not the games getting worse, it's the fans who are getting more demanding. That's not to say that there aren't any bad RPGs being released today, but the ratio of good games vs. bad ones haven't changed all that much. Just my opinion, of course.

First time I played FF6 I was like "Oooh". Now its like another RPG with fairly bad quality and milty interesting plot. Games are still the same, but we demand always more. |

I definetely agree with AG3-san's opinion.
For me, te peak of the RPG was in the SNES. When FF III, FF V, Secret of Mana, Lufia, Super Mario RPG (unforgettable), Dragon Quest III, EarthBound, Breath of Fire, Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia and Chrono Trigger (which's the best RPG I've ever played) were the Golden Era IMO. The PSX era was great too. Even though, a lot of its big titles (such as the continuation of FF, Dragon Quest, Chrono and Breath of Fire) became really famous in the SNES. |
