The only thing being that Houki and Mio have the same seiyu, if I remember correctly. Otherwise, no. Mio's face is too mild for Houki.

For all the hate and bewilderment I have for naming your child a "Broom", I completely forgot a "good word" that can be spelled out using Houki
"Comet" or "Houki Boshi" can be spelled in 3 manners: 箒星, 帚星, and 彗星. The first kanji for the first 2 words essentially means "Broom"

I just reread volume 3, the part when she introduced the Akatsubaki. The anime changed and skipped some trivial and some important parts.

Spoiler for Reunion:

Something big must happpened in the past, probably when Houki was still unborn, that made Tabane to have such mind set. It sounds as if she don't care about her parents much. Also, because we know Tabane is somewhat not to be trusted, she probably know one blondie, namely Squall (only Tabane is able to create IS cores, so who gave the Phantom Task their IS?)

Name may define a person's life, may be that is what Tabane's been doing all along, controlling her sister's life.

If I was Tabane and cared about my sister, I will do my best to not allow my father to name my sister a "Broom", then again she was 8 at that time, and impossible for her to win a sword fight against a sword master. Fast forward to future, if Tabane really cared for her parents and Houki's feeling toward Ichika, she shouldn't create IS from the start.

She should have just created an anime about IS, where the IS then can be merchandise like a gunpla :P

Sorry mods for discussing some novel parts here, because I don't think people are interested in novels that have been animated but poorly adapted

Had a weird dream with me confronting Tabane at gunpoint--If you have to know, I was pointing the Kamen Rider Faiz Phone (Gun mode) at her...don't ask.

Essentially we were at odds because Tabane would stop at nothing to make sure Houki and Ichika end up together, while I was trying to ensure it would be Charlotte.

Tabane: "You like that foreigner a lot, don;t you? Why don't you take her, Hou-chan gets Ii-chan, and we're all happy?"

Me: "It doesn't work that way. Charlotte can't be happy with anyone except Ichika. I don't let things like that slide."

Tabane: "Oho? So you would dare make my little sister unhappy?"

Me: "I don't want Houki to suffer, either. But Charu has more to lose."

Tabane: "The world isn't fair. And you're so selfish in being selfless!"

...next thing I know, I wake up. -_-

(Lesson learned: Do not watch the movie "Inception" after discussing Tabane and then going to bed...)

In my speculative opinion, the Shinonono's Sword School/Family is supposed to have 2 branches: One for wielding the sword (warrior), and one for the shrine (priestess). Since probably the family don't have a boy, and Tabane leave/ran away from the house, Houki has to carry the burdens. The novel described her as "Tsurugi no Miko" (Priestess of the Sword).
Probably the clash between 2 branches that made Houki somewhat violent and can easily has mood swing.
