Devilman
I can't believe I got a chance to see this. ILA has been releasing some neat stuff, and I've been watching as much of it as possible. But this tops them all.
Devilman is Nagai Gou's self-proclaimed "life's work." The manga was so popular that this adaptation went into production almost before the pages were dry. Regardless of the mindboggling violence and sleaziness of his oeuvre, there is a remarkable vitality to it. The urge to animate this haunting tale full of man's darkest urges and jokes about boys wetting themselves inspired the creators to overcome even the stone-age technology of 1972. It is instructive to see how little really has changed since those far distant days. No matter how cosmic Devilman/Akira's powers are, he still has to skip breakfast if he wants to get to school on time. No matter how fearsome his fists, he is helpless before the fury of his cousin Miki. And of course no matter how many times he is clawed and gored by savaging griffons, Akira always shows up in the next scene with a nice fresh yellow T-shirt. Far be it from me to recommend this show to anyone. I am not worthy... |

Seems like they turned it into a dumb monster-of-the-week show. The three OVAs are a lot more like the manga, and way better. |

I'm very happy to see Devilman TV being fansubbed. Nothing brings a warm, fuzzy feeling to my heart like watching a ludicrously powerful green devil screaming "DEVIL CHOP!" as he karate chops a giant monster elephant. Watching old Go Nagai shows brings me a swelling of childish glee that so few things can match nowadays.
Corrections: The manga version of Devilman came after the anime production was already well underway, and ended up gradually straying further away from how things were planned out to go in the anime. This is surprisingly frequent, I've discovered of late - Many times, manga versions of stories are started after the story flow for the anime version of something is already established, and they move independently of one another. There were only two OVAs produced, then much later on, the Amon movie, and now the live action flick. I must admit, I'm really looking forward to the live action version, though this is mostly because Akira and Ryo's actors are brothers who happen to look really really good. Let me offer some info I translated from Go Nagai's own personal notes about Devilman, as my own contribution to the thread. It explains a lot about how Devilman initially got off the ground, from its roots in the Maou Dante manga's cancellation, to something designed to be an anime (yes, the anime came first), to the later manga that revolutionized Go Nagai's career. http://www.dra-mata.com/manga/nagai/gn-devilman01.jpg http://www.dra-mata.com/manga/nagai/gn-devilman02.jpg http://www.dra-mata.com/manga/nagai/gn-devilman03.jpg http://www.dra-mata.com/manga/nagai/gn-devilman04.jpg http://www.dra-mata.com/manga/nagai/gn-devilman05.jpg http://www.dra-mata.com/manga/nagai/gn-devilman06.jpg http://www.dra-mata.com/manga/nagai/gn-devilman07.jpg http://www.dra-mata.com/manga/nagai/gn-devilman08.jpg http://www.dra-mata.com/manga/nagai/gn-devilman09.jpg http://www.dra-mata.com/manga/nagai/gn-devilman10.jpg http://www.dra-mata.com/manga/nagai/gn-devilman11.jpg http://www.dra-mata.com/manga/nagai/gn-devilman12.jpg |

okay,I know the OVA is licensed(the OVA is much better than AMON or Mazinger vs Devilman..not to mention the Live Action..UGH!),and the one I saw was this horrible version of censored,English-dubbed(and they weren't good either) Devilman DVD. Anyone know if other versions are released? Devilman OVA DVD seems really rare these days..

Devilman Lady TV series. Thoughts
It just so happens that from last Sunday until today I took on the venture at watching the full Devilman Lady TV anime, something I managed to conclude in only six days.
I immediately took interest in watching the anime right after reading the first three volumes of Devilman manga. Then, I took it upon myself to research the Devilman franchise and found out about Devilman Lady as well. However, the title didn't ring any brand-new bells on me since over 10 years ago I found out about Devilman Lady and was keen to try it out. Unfortunately, I was limited back then by two things: 1) I was studying college at the time, and 2) at the time my connection was through telephone line. (A drag back on those good old days) Anyways, thankfully, now at this particularly present moment of my life I was able to get my chance to watch Devilman Lady all full episodes. So this is my review: What can I say? While the animation is not the best and suffers serious faults, both the story development and the mythos were a truly unique and fantastic experiences. Jun was first imposed and then forced to play the role of the relunctant anti-hero, a situation she never asked for or wanted in the first place. Her reactions were truly humane, emotional, and, at the end, tragic. I sincerely believed her descent into the mad hell she went through was handled in a very natural and spontaneous way. Spoiler:
The other thing that surprised me was that the writers were able to allocate a handful pack of other recurrent characters that while some of them I don't believe did not contribute much to the development of the plot, save to drive Jun forward, others did deliver solid substance as how the plot was progressing. Spoiler:
Contrary to the Devilman series, Devilman Lady's theme revolved around the need for humanity to evolve and arising from the biological stagnation at which they felt pleasant during the present timeline of the series, infusing quasi-folklore involving God and Devil-alike symbologies and allegories taken from a pseudo-Christian context. Spoiler:
Now, I come with the big slice of the pie: Asuka. Spoiler:
I have to admit that while the bittersweet ending finishes in a happy note... Spoiler for If you do not want to know the ending, then don't click:
I truly felt sorry for Jun at the end. She did not deserve that ending, but it really made her and this show a very remarkable and memorable to me. |
