One Day by the Rootless of is the best opening theme for One Piece compared to the other opening themes for the last decade.

I agree with Maaya Sakamoto's revival of those classic songs (Shimokawa Mikuni, Nana Kitade, and Shoko Nakagawa are some of my favorites) With the later added in my Alternate Singer Mix Collection which feature great old anime songs performed by the latest singers to another level. Hopefully, she sing the 1st opening song of Slam Dunk peformed by BAAD in one of her concerts when the anime celebrates its 20 years, it would be interesting.

I hope she will sing in the future a anime song previously sang by men as a good inclusion to my Cross World Collection.

@You could link the Heidi post with those Gintama Heidi parodies.

That one piece opening was excellent, thank you. I won't know it if I don't come here because while I like One Piece, I never watched the anime (the amount of episode is just...too big).

As for the best OP....Yakusoku no Basho e of Kaleido star and Hajimari no Kaze from Saiunkoku no Monogatari. Both songs have an irreplaceable place in my heart ;_;

@christinemarie: From what I've seen in Youtube, Gintama parodies Heidi (Funny as hell!) the anime but not it's opening sequence.

News: This week's Oricon singles chart has 4 anime theme songs occupying the Top 10. One Piece OP13, "One Day" by the Rootless (championed by christinemarie and Flyvedelta), is the only holdover from last week at #5 with 11,944 copies sold. 2 new anime songs likewise debuted as provided below:

Spoiler for video:

"kizunairo" by Lia/Fortune Arterial ~Akae Yakusoku~ OP/#6 with 11,139 copies sold
"Lia's next anime theme single after her best-selling "My Soul, Your Beats!" single. A good song as what you'd expect from Lia and probably the highlight of the low buzz anime series."

Spoiler for video:

"ROSE HIP-BULLET" by GRANRODEO/Togainu no Chi OP/#7 with 11,020 sold
"Arguably, the best song to date of this two piece band headed by the seiyuu voicing Stiyl Magnus of the Index series. Hard rock songs from this band is a welcome respite from the usual anime theme songs"

But the really big J-pop news is that idol girl group AKB48's "Beginner" sold a mindblowing 826,989 copies in it's first week (9th best of all time) and became best-selling single of 2010 (so far) after only 3 days. Their past two singles had sold over 500,000+ copies. In the U.S. only Flo Rida ("Right Round") and Ke$ha ("TikTok") had 500,000+ singles sales debut. And oh lest I forget, Houkago Tea Time's first full album for K-ON!! sold 127,000 copies to debut at #1. That's peanuts compared to Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" album which sold 1,047,000 copies in the U.S. but still an amazing feat for a fictional group. What a great week for the music industry.

Here are my inductions into the Hall of Fame for Week 87 (The Week ending on October 31, 2010):

GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) (TV/Ending Theme #2, eps 17-33/2000)

Parody Watch: Last week's episode of South Park made a parody to the theme song of My Neighbor Totoro. Who knew Matt Stone and Trey Parker were Hayao Miyazaki fans ? My Neighbor Totoro might be my 5th favorite anime movie (after Spirited Away, Akira, Princess Mononoke and Grave of the Fireflies) but the song below is my favorite song from an anime movie. That may be the reason I was laughing so hard when I watched the South Park bit. Nice job, Matt and Trey.

Here's the original song "Tonari no Totoro"

Here's the South Park parody song "Turning Dreams into Nightmares"
WARNING: BAD LANGUAGE, what'd you expect? it has Cartman!

No nominations yet for "Sign of Love" by immi, the OP for Saraiya Goyou? I'm hard pressed to decide between this and Cross Game's "Summer Rain" for best OP of 2010.

Regarding my recommendation for November "Yashashisa ni Tsutsumareta Nara" its the ending theme of Kiki's Delivery Service by Yumi Arai, revived by Maaya Sakamoto (There are tons of artists/seiyuu revived the song for the last 21 years.). It's even on the Hall of Fame list already. I like the new version song by her better than its predecessor.

@SOGESNAKE: I agree, "We Are" FTW and one of the earliest inclusions in the Hall of Fame from the late 90's-early 2000's.

Chart News: This is one of the few weeks of the calendar year where there are no new anison entries in the Oricon Top 10.

Anison Pop-Culture Watch: Belated Happy Thanksgiving to all! Macy's Thanksgiving Day has the New York Police Department Marching Band playing Space Battleship Yamato's (not "Yamamoto" as reported by NBC) OP "Uchuu Senkan Yamato", which is the best anison of the 70's in my book and the second most requested anison in Japanese karaoke joints, behind "Cutey Honey" (click here for the anime OP). See the clip below:

It's not the 1st time they played it. You can see their June 6 performance (much better video) at Central Park to commemorate Japan Day here.

Think the "music fans" or "music otaku" are getting angry now that Oricon's charts are dominated by anisongs?

It's out of my recommendation list (only the opening made it, something painful happened to the past when I hear this song it brings back those memories made me not to add it.) but since someone from my timeline or the new generations wants to listen to it, here it is.

Good question that I can't resist answering. I assume that the "music fans" or "music otaku" you are referring to are big fans of the mainstream J-Pop/J-Rock artists as supposed to works by anime voice actors (like Nana Mizuki, Aya Hirano) or artists whose works are majority anime tie-ins (like KOTOKO, ALI PROJECT). If that's the case, then in my opinion the answer is a qualified yes.

I agree that this has been a banner year for anime music not just in terms of sales and chart ranking but also in respectability and critical praise. It is expected that around 100 anime tie-in singles will place in the top 10 for the year 2010, a record that is most welcomed for the anime community but may raise some eyebrows of people outside it. They may not like the fact that anime songs are getting attention in the Japanese mainstream and is not a niche market anymore, but they are a minority. There may be or eventually be a backlash to the increased exposure of anime music in primetime Japanese TV or other media but for this year new fans have outweighed the cynics. Below are some articles to prove my above-discussed statements:

1. The Japanese communications service provider BIGLOBE recently presented the top 10 anime news stories of 2010 (Noteworthy are Nos. 8 and 10)
#8 The anime song whirlwind as one tie-in song after another takes over the Oricon charts' top ranks (which relates to #1 The Big Boom of K-ON!!)
#10 Anime voice actresses and actors make a splash in magazines and television highlighted by Nana Mizuki's appointment to Kouhaku Uta Gassen's support team.

2.Anime songs top charts with talented singers and support from women
Apparently, majority of the sales of singles from seiyuus came from female consumers. When the Tower Records store in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district opened a section for anime songs this spring, there was a 30% spike in female customers. The manager believes that this big boom will continue as talents are going into the anime songs genre.

3. New fans groove to 'anime music'
Anime music is considered a musical sub-genre of J-Pop but just like alternative music was in the early 90's, this year, what was once music catering to a specific market is now debuting high in the Oricon daily or weekly charts on a regular basis. New music magazines are even devoted to the genre.

4. Lastly, let's explore the situation back in 2005: More Exposure for Anime Music Wanted (June 2005)
A #3 anime song could not even secure a spot on music shows, 2ch lobbied in the vain. It was considered a risk for an artist who is not yet well-established to do an OP or ED to an anime song since some sectors would brand that artist as second-rate. Even a musical guest on a radio show made the comment "I hope these [anime] things would just go away".

But, today, five years later: NHK to air a TV show about popular anime songs (May 2010)
2ch got its wish, better late than never.Clearly the demand is there, it's about time NHK to supply that demand. It took K-ON!!, Nana Mizuki, Lia, May'n and even virtual idol Hatsune Miko selling singles like hotcakes and selling out concerts to force a change.

On a final note, I would like to state my personal view that anime music has it's share of horrible music which adds fuel to the fire of these 'haters' (some quarters would point to some K-ON!! singles as example) but such may also be said for mainstream J-Pop which has it's share of bad singles which sold well. If a song's total sales correlates to its beauty then this world would be a much better place. In my world, Maaya Sakamoto has a dozen #1 singles and KOKIA would have sold-out concerts but life is not fair and beautiful song just like a beautiful woman really depends on the eye of the beholder (of course there are general consensus). Moreover, other forces are at work: radio, TV and the music company's promotion being the major ones. Thus, I am glad that there are bashers out there, just hope that the commotion won't die down since it may mean that anime music is relegated back to the bargain bin of a music store gathering dust.

Assuming they would use the same song from the game Valkyria Chronicles 3 to its 2 episode OVA anime this Spring 2011. It reminds me of MS: 008th for some reason.
