Indeed but IMO, the opening is quite hypnotic and the "I want make you my slave" article on the newspaper incident was somewhat amusing.

So any of you compared the version 2 releases by the other groups? If so what group do you think did the best job for Lucky Star?

Sleeping-Forest's is the best by FAR. Not even close. That a.f.k. group did okay for newbs, but there's no substitue for experience!

BTW I just love the opening song. But I have to wonder HOW many retakes it took for them to get it right. Man it's like a tongue twister and being an auctioneer in one. The song is so fast at times it's nuts.. I am definitely putting this song on my phone which is also an mp3 player to listen to while driving

So right now I'm watching the episode and since comedy is such a subjective subject I feel I will invent a completely random rating system out of nowhere in order to review this episode. So here goes:

Spoiler:

So tallying it up we get a -78632/MOE. The distinct lack of Guile's Theme really hit the show hard it would seem. Lesson is, don't mess with a guy and his 16-Bit era video game music.

That being said, I found the segments that took deliberate pot shots at the Otaku scene to be the funniest. Unfortunately they only encompassed about a 1/3 of the jokes at most so the rest were just kind of meh. If this show wants me to really like it, it needs to keep up with the Otaku jokes. Go after me and my mecha, I don't care, go after lolicon too if you want, but just do the Otaku jokes more often.

a.f.k. has been around since at least '02, from memory. They have a reputation, particularly recently, of localizing the language in their translations, which is counter to the attitude of a lot of other groups, which leave some words in Japanese (eg, otaku, moe, etc). Personally, I actually think it's a good way to do things, since it leads to a more thorough translation, and doesn't leave it's audience in the dark if they aren't familiar with otaku terminology.

I dug up a video of the OP stripped of the vocals. The OP is lame without the singing because the background music absolutely sucks. It just goes to show you how voice-dependent the OP is.

Over-translation is never a bad thing. If you are familiar enough with the otaku culture, you should have picked up the term from listening alone.

Beside, the more you watched anime... shouldnt you rely less on the subs?

For the formula see the Code Geass Harem Parody opening. +1000 for loli high kick during cheerleading sequence. Distance Run: -200 for bizarre jump cut during Konata's speed run. Eating: -500 for boring segment +400 for obvious sexual connotation of loli licking what appear to be something incredibly delicious. -100 for boring background +100 for what in gods name is Konata mumbling. + 0 for bizarre shadows in the background. + 1 for trademark run on sentence by Aya Hirano. Discussin the Kidnapper: + 100 for Konata's mention of Adult games and her inability to come up with an answer. Discussin the Grades (A Classic Anime Passtime since 1992): +1000 for Konata being really freaking short. +5000 for Konata's slight against Miyuki being nothing more than a Moe object (tripping, cutting herself, getting her bag stuck in the door, wearing glasses, the freaking devious monster) +2000 for Miyuki's ditto eyes. Following Mikuru, er Miyuki +129 for oh my god did Miyuki just bump into a wall, BWAHAHAHAHA! The noises too, I swear she's some sort of bizarre test subject to make the most Moe thing on earth. HA! They need something like this in some sort of otaku daily strip.... oh wait. -50 for bizarre transition to next scene. The Flu: +200 for Whoa what the hell is going on with Kagami's freakin eyes! +8000 for Konota is a creeping freaking loli. -5000 for generic sick girl. +912 for Konota's lack of tact when greating a sick friend. -800 for Miyuki and Kagami talking at the same time (this one I'm actually kind of serious about. Chalk it up to bad audio direction or editing I feel.) -100 for yuri tension when Tsukasa walks in on Kagami and Miyuki. +1249 for freaking Ditto eyes again. +2000 for Moe stereotypes are really freaking dumb an Kagami has a right to be annoyed at the infinite loop. Back at School: +12000 for what loli is attempting to wear a padded Bra, WHERE?! +20000 for HOT DAMN THEY ARE EXAMINING THE LOLI'S FOR SMALLPOX.... or something, but whatever. What kind of doctor gets to do this anyway? +1375 for Konata hasn't grown at all apparently. +50 for Konota thinks RPG friend are real friends. Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaah..... -5000 for evil foreigner trying to abduct loli. +10000 for loli kicking foreigner's ass without getting hit (This is actually almost like how the Street Fighter 1 system worked. Everything did a lot of damage) -100000 for a distinct lack of Guile's theme in the segment (that's like my second favourite theme in all of street fighter next to Ken's theme. The character himself kind of sucks though). +1000 for Konata terrifies the ever loving crap out of me in one short cut here. This is why you never screw with the loli's and their anime watching time (here that MLB). Lucky Channel: -50000 for AH KILL IT! NOW! +1 for slightly less annoying sidekick to hyper girl. +1301 for showing what is likely the true side of everybody's favourite idols. They probably aren't as nice as you think.
