I have the same feeling too... especially when Yuuko became 1st Place just like she wanted to be! Still, at least the election wasn't rigged like I predicted.

Well succession is all they know. Forming a new team would be a surprise because they've never done it before, so of course they've only talked about succession. I'm not sure what they're going to do myself, but I think the following images from the OP lend weight to the idea of the trainess being split off into their own team.

But then, if there wasn't going to have succession, why would they even mention it on the PV? Plus I do think the symbolic power that is succeeding the legendary akb members is pretty big for the akb0048 girls.

Something interesting to note in this episode. If this is Tomochin's first election, then the Tomochin 4 years ago on Lancastar, may be her older sister.

AKB0048 17 - An Awards Ceremony Worth Watching

That was a really well done episode. Cutting between the election awards ceremony and the flashbacks made for some really powerful stuff. I could sense it from the voice actresses too, both the pro ones and the understudies. Good to see Chieri realizing she can satisfy her fans and stick it to her father without abandoning the former. If the ending is any indication, she can only do it by docking with Nagisa... wait, wrong series. They've been teasing this Center Nova thing for so long, I wonder how many more episodes it's going to be before they finally reveal all these secrets. If S4, Yuuko and Tsubasa are all talking about it at the same time, something must be starting to move, and it probably has to do with that weird dream from back in episode 1, too. I may not be very well versed in AKB48 lore, but this series is very enjoyable even for someone who isn't. Looking forward to the weeks ahead, for as they said, this is only the beginning.

Indeed. Now, the girls could still become successors. Nothing is guaranteed at the moment. There are clues that point both ways, really. That's what makes this interesting.

YES! Nagisa finally got it together! I can continue watching without disliking any of the girls!

And apparently, Yuuko is the protagonist now. Sensei sort of agreed, don't bother it about it.

Emotions, emotions, emotions. That's what this episode was about, and they were all conveyed quite nicely, particularly Mimori, Kojiharu (now, that was unexpected), Chieri (now, that was intense), Takamina and Yuuko. For the latter and the former two, this was the chance to develop over everything we've seen from them till day one, and it couldn't have come out better.

And of course, Nagisa's silent development through the whole event was great as well, it was such a different way to do it, no yelling her to stop being a moron (Thank you, based Kawamori and everyone else involved, for not repeating this), no special situation where she's the only hope, she just watched and realized things weren't as horrible as she expected, and in fact she wants a piece of the action as well. Guess I was right, that heart tugging was her competitive spirit trying to come out, and come out it did.

And boy, what a way to wrap it up. When Sensei says something, it's always a big deal, in-series or not, and when Sensei mentions Acchan, you know things are gonna get good. Again, doesn't this pretty much mean Yuuko is now the protagonist?

And now, the moment we've all been waiting for, the famous "star wars-like" episode is coming. I know many are expecting mic sabers galore, but it could easily be something more subtle like Acchan repraising her role as Obi-Wan to warn Nagisa and crew about the incoming threat of Aizendad, but even so, I can't wait.

what Sensei-sensei said is actually a point against Yuuko, (sad for her) because she IS YUUKO, S4 mention "center-nova...acchan" so it's almost a surety the next center-nova wont be Yuuko. Of course she is currently the center just not center-nova, much like Tsubasa(mariko-sama) was previously.

By the same reasoning as above I don't think there would be a duo center nova ( although i did harbor the idea a lot since early episodes of season 1,and thought it would be nice). But because there can only be one acchan successor, it probably wont happen, which doesn't mean they wont be there to always support each other or that they might alternate in the future.

Think about for a minute garbage. S4 says "center-nova...acchan", and right in the next scene you have Yuuko saying "Acchan" after seeing Chieri and Nagisa's combined glow.

It's basically something like this:

Chieri x Nagisa = Acchan = Center Nova duo.
