At first glance, i know that this anime is going to be great.
Then i went to Wikipedia, and i know that this anime IS GOING TO BE GREAT (yes, it's in ALL CAPS).

The novelist has a long history of being a prolific writer, and she (yes, a lady) is 56 this year. Time-tested. The novel is like the mother of all Japanese RPGs. No wonder Nobuo Uematsu does the OST, it must be an honor for him.

I don't think Forgotten Realms novels reach 124 books in total...

Maybe Remus is wimpy because Linda is the author avatar?

Hmm... Remus is wimpy because Kings are wimpy? No, that doesn't make sense...
Remus is wimpy because he's actually the prophet and prophets can be wimpy? Yep, probably.
Linda has the capability to rule, at this point. Until Remus pulls up his socks, Linda will always take the spotlight. I foresee some angst about this.

Out of personal experience, the only reason anyone grows Iron Ballz is if they have the opportunity to use it. The feather weight prince here needs a good enough motivation [read: woman], unless the books throw a curve ball here and makes him the bottom of a yaoi relationship >_<

Still, have to agree that Linda pulling that blade on a squad of soldiers was very cool, though inherently pretty dumb. Then again, we have the resident leopard man driving a fully armoured soldier 6 ft into solid ground with his fists. How about suspending logic in the face of such a monster

Yes, but she didn't have many options at that point. If she'd turned to run (and abandoned her younger brother in the process) they just would have shot her in the back. It isn't as though she had much chance of outrunning a group of mounted knights.

Besides, nothing says that 'stupid' and 'badass' have to be mutually exclusive.

The first episode was very cheesy - in a good way and a bad way. If this were a Saturday morning cartoon for 10-16 year olds, i.e. the young adult market, I would probably have enjoyed it (when I was a kid) - and I'd even be happy to see something like this on TV at that hour NOW. As it is though, with the King & Queen dying and their kingdom being overthrown so easily, with the cursed who-am-I Conan-esque Guin with his leopard HEAD (if that's a mask, it's not anymore), the weak-but-will-grow-stronger Lemus/Remus, the strong-willed, I-have-premonitions Rinda/Linda and, let's not forget, the oppressive Enemy, I have to turn away, at my age. Some may call this traditional sword-and-sorcery but even Dragonlance was hideous when it was animated. You can't expect to be "epic" anything when you lay down the tone of a Saturday morning cartoon.

Uematsu's work is great, as always. The ED was excellent, too, and very nice blending of Latin, English, and Japanese in a really lovely song.

A key difference between this and a "Saturday morning cartoon" is that it won't be limited by PG guidelines like those kiddie shows in terms of adult content. The creator of Berserk credited Guin Saga as a major influence. Guin Saga probably does'nt even come close to Berserk in terms of graphic violence or other subject matter but it ain't no tame Dungeons and Dragons cartoon from the 80s where no one ever got seriously hurt.

Anyway, instead of seeing it as a derivative work of other manga/anime, this is actually the material that some of the popular series from the last 20-30 years drew some of their inspiration from. That puts things in a different perspective while watching it.

10-16 as young adult market is a non-sense. Teenagers would have been a more appropriate term. Young adults would be more the 18-25 age range.

Guin Saga would be better appreciated if someone remembered a time when heroic fantasy was not yet flooded by emo/loudmouthed spiky-haired kids bodybuilt like shrimps who swing swords the size of the Pisa Tower and doomsday spell porn. I think that this is one of the kind of people that Guin Saga the animation is aiming.

Looks like a mixed bag on the feedback from Guin Saga, but all in all as I have mentioned in a previous post, I loved it. I cant wait for episode 2 to be subbed and I look foward to unraveling the mystery of Guin and seeing some more crazy battle scenes, I can only hope this anime is going to be a long one, but we are probably looking at about 26 episodes or so......

If you have a problem with it being too "stereotypical", keep in mind that the source novel of this first episode is 30 years old. Before any of those became a stereotype.

Also, this is an NHK broadcast anime. A western comparable example would be something you'd expect on PBS, or BBC. The slight "educational feel" of the show is because of that.

Just checked out the first episode, and i'm seriously liking what i'm seeing. Just the summary alone speaks out to be on so many levels how epic this will be, and the first episode does not disappoint.

Nobuo Uematsu's score so far though, my god it's fantastic. Just the piece alone that was used for Guin's first appearance blew me away.

Going by the official site, the soundtrack will be released on June 24th 2009.

Guin Saga has the advantage of being based on a good fantasy series, though. I suggest you stick with it, it is deeper than you think.

I do agree the storytelling is a bit old school, although it doesn't bother me nearly as much as you. It doesn't mean it's immature considering the closest series in anime to it is Berzerk...

And dude, Dragonlance isn't classic Sword and Sorcery, it's just generic fantasy. Guin Saga is one of the true S&S classics; It's closer to Stormbringer, Conan, the adventures of Fafrd and the Grey Mouser...

Episode 2 unveils the OP, and holy crap it's amazing.
Uematsu's music score for the OP is absolutely fantastic, it reminds me back when NHK was running Twleve Kingdoms...

Mine would be Thomas Covenant Chronicles. Steven Donaldson is my favorite fantasy author.

Ghibli's does indeed not count. That was a lame, lame movie even if I hadn't read the series it was based off of.

Well we are getting a little off topic but since we are throwing about fantasy series that really really need to be made into anime I'd be remiss not to have George R.R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" mentioned. I've been reading tons of fantasy since I was 12 (i'm 28 now) and by far it's the best i've ever read in that particular genre and maybe any genre. That series would make an epic anime.

As far as on topic stuff, I really wonder if any groups planning on continuing with this show, there seems to be a fair amount of interest building through word of mouth about this show, so I'm hoping a group or two will pick it up as a "main" project.

Even if no group decides to sub it, the biggest thing going for this show is Guin showing the many creative ways he can put people/demons/things through a wall.

Of course, ep 2 is also a showcase on how well he does going through one himself

Maybe this show should be called Guin the Animation: A Bollywood Saga. They go through lots of walls in that one.

On another note, I noticed that whenever that coin is a solid thought in Guin's mind he can basically kick anyone's ass. When it falls, then his God mode is off and he better cut the heroics. I suspect that this is some sort of marker for the man as an agent of fate.

Another theme going is the concept of calling people to help the twins using light. The first up was Guin himself, the next was that knight impressed by the GAR

. Since he was featured in the OP as some sort of Calvary commander, it looks like Guin's God mode was switched off in order for this guy to live.
