I still can't get over just how much people seem to hate the theme song by Chiaki Kuriyama just about everywhere I look on the internet. It's just about the most bewildering thing to come out of the whole promotional blitz of the series so far. Honestly even if it's not the greatest Gundam theme they could have conceivably come up with is it really that bad? Just...wow....

More like she's a new singer who happens to have a lot of help along the way in debuting with a tie in for a popular series so people just get extra critical of her effort. I mean I would honestly be the first person to sit down and say that I think it's lame for a poor singer to get a head start in such a way, but I'm just not seeing how she's supposed to be this awful singer people are claiming. Each time I've heard this criticism of her being completely unable to sing I've gone back to listen to the song really hard and to try to pick out anything that suggests it's a horrible song and that I might have missed some utter failing of the vocal effort and just simply can't find it if it's even there to begin with. No matter how many times I listen to it I still find it enjoyable and even a little bit moving.
I really hope that people have actually listened to the song before coming to these conclusions, acknowledged that it's a soft ballad and not a rock song or whatever is popular these days, and have some extended appreciation for music otherwise this is just kind of sad for Kuriyama's debut attempt and for Gundam music in general. It's funny because I can't even imagine what the Japanese music scene would be like if it were subjected to the same scrutiny this song has been as a whole. That would surely be a sight if not an instant collapse. In the meantime I'll keep listening to the youtube rip and try to find the part that's supposed to be terrible. I feel fine, I'm just genuinely baffled by the hate for it. I mean if I like a song I like a song and there's little that's going to change it, but it does seem odd that when the song first came out with the second trailer there was little commentary on it, but the second that people heard it was Chiaki Kuriyama who was in Kill Bill it's like the song all of a sudden became taboo....perhaps for the weaboo. I hope it's not the case and that the criticism has all been considered by the people that profess to dislike it so much (maybe they would have preferred a rock song as much as I doubt it would fit here), but the fact that "Chiaki the actress" seems to be the subject of the criticism rather than "Chiaki the singer" is a little suspect.

The song itself is good.

As someone who dislikes the song, I only formed my opinion after hearing the full version PV (not Unicorn trailer). And it's not that I don't like ballads. Most recently, Gundam 00 Special Edition EDs have similar melody with Ryusei no Namida, but I like them.
That said while mike says she doesn't like Megumi Nakajima, I like her voice, and Aimo is among my favorite song ever in Macrossverse. Taste really plays when it comes to music. |

Coming from one who have read the novels, I can only imply that Ryuusei No Namida needed to be accompanied by the visuals from the anime in order to show it's depth. It's seems to be set as the perfect tune to console a Zeonic Remnant.
Might be because of her more shadier past ? As before the world known as Gogo to the world, she starred as a nude child model in Japan. I even had scans of a few photo books from those days stash somewhere in my labyrith of a harddisk. But she was not an attractive Rori from what I can remember, even in her birthday suit. |

Maybe people are biased against Chiaki, maybe not. IMO, she was most memorable to me in Battle Royale. |

Judge for yourself. This was taken circa '96-'97 when she was about 11-12 years of age. The anti-child pornography laws only came into effect in the 00's. Before that, child nudity was perfectly legal in Japan. But enough about Kuriyama and this will be my last post about her before everything gets derailed here. |

I watch trailers, it looks good! But I hope that it will not disappointed me like Gundam 00! By the way, the song is really bad . I would like to hear the soundtrack that we can hear in some trailers rather than this song!
