They might just mean in order of appearance. Kotori wasn't revealed to be a spirit until after Kurumi was introduced.

Ah, that makes sense. Now that I recall, I believe one of Yoshino's episode titles said something like "the 2nd spirit".

The numbers are based on the number in the spirits name. The mi in Kurumi is 3. The yo in Yoshino is 4. The To in toka is 10. Itsu in Itsuka Kotori is 5. Ya in yamai is 8.

note this is not a spoiler these are clear as day if you can read the Japanese names and they are numbered in the opening

I always wondered what happens when all 10 are taken up. Is 10 going to the maximum number of spirits that will appear or is the author going to fill the names for new spirits with "hundred" or "thousand". I think numerals like 11, 12 or 13 etc would take up two word characters for the name (as is the case for Chinese, but I dunno if it's the same for Japanese), and would seem less elegant.

I seriously doubt we'll ever have that many spirits in this show.

As with Shinji I doubt there'll be this many spirits. As for the numbers, yes, Japanese uses the Chinese numbering system.

I don't believe there will be too many more then 10 if any as so far the author seems to have based the names of the angels and the spirits numbers on the sephirothic tree of life which only has 10 or 11 places. But that doesn't prevent him from using something else if he wanted to add more

It was pretty much stated that Shidou had to choose 1 girl to resolve their charm competition. If he kissed one of them it would signal the end of the competition and the other would think their finished and the emotional state would be problematic. Shidou needed a way to seal both of them without fighting and probably the only way would be to seal them together. Ironically enough they did his job for him in the end.

Also, the trains are driven by monkeys. On LSD.
