They didn't have flatscreen TVs in the 1980s.
I image the Virtual Boy is to show a contrast between the guy's air of richness...and the fact that he's a farmer's son and probably poor as hell. Mia is just being weird...she was reading real estate magazines previously. Thigh might be her parents machine that she's been playing with since she was a toddler. Sort of how some kind in the late 90s and early 2000s would break out their parents old Atari 2600s to play old school games before the Atari PC controller and game packs came out. (Mine still works even)

Retro games consoles appeared in Shinryaku! Ika Musume -- there was a lot of references to the Sega MegaDrive console including people reading MegaDrive Magazine as well as playing the games (and, IIRC a clip in the opening titles showing Ika trying to smash a cartridge into the MegaDrive's slot)
In contrast in the second episode of A Channel two of the girls play a Wii driving game.

I guess I'll be holding on to this show a bit longer, this episode actually made me laugh quite a few times, particularly Yuuko being trolled by Mia and pretty much everything regarding Nano, the Professor and Sakamoto-san.

The completely random comics Mai used to "troll" Yuuko with instead of being her homework were the best part of the episode , and odd interuptions saving Yuuko from answering the question was an amusing scene, though Sakamoto-san's introduction was pretty funny too.
