For the curiousity sake, I watched the episode. It definitely succeed in giving a creepy vibe and even better than the manga did and I still stick by my post on the previous page. Sure, the animation was jerky as hell and the character design was very rough around the edge and the pace was slow but it was somewhat good. Maybe I never was too attached to the manga or maybe the fact, this anime is trashed to hell, it wasn't that bad as I thought.
I mean this anime is like a trip back to 90's to early 2000's with the likes of Lain and Texhnolyze. I just watched this episode like I'm watching these. Speaking of these, how the hell did you people watch these anime all the way and rate them high?!? Maybe I'm just a nostalgic for anime like this but I find all these subjective and objective opinion frankly bullshit. Either you get it or you don't. Just move on and let it go. I think here I give my 6 cents anime fans are way too spoilt by the nice visuals from Kyoto Animation, P.A Works, Shaft and Madhouse. I do really feel typical anime watchers are now desensitised by what's supposed to be superb visuals and styles and those usual expensive animations and moe character design seem normal. Now they have to insult the people who genuinely seem to like this anime is a hipster. Give me a fucking break. I don't know how much you liked the manga but I feel a lot of them are exaggerating the flaws way out of universal proportion. I was already baffled at reactions from myanimelist but I digress. Anime studios are at hard position as now I see anime fans are the hardest to please. Rant over.

ofc they would have to "resemble" the characters somewhat, but I don't think it's something you could design. What i don't get is how people use "character design" in the way it probably doesn't mean what they are talking about.

Although the point is a lot of people probably do think this (all you have to do is read some of the replies on ANN)

Personally my issue lies with the rotoscoping quality, which I feel is one of the worst uses of it I've ever seen, and the OP/ED choices. It didn't help that the backgrounds repeated a lot too. I don't mind rotoscoping at all. A number of my favorite western animation used it (pick a Don Bluth movie, heh), and it's used in a few of my favorite anime as well. But in this case, it really does feel like the staff simply traced over a live action sequence very hastily, and left it at that, and there's no real "depth" or detail to any of it. Basically, I could accept the changes if it looked like the staff actually tried, but it doesn't. The effects come off cheap, and it hurts my ability to take it seriously when Nakamura appears and looks like someone smashed her in the face with the ugly branch. There's nothing alluring about her at all. She just looks pissed because life handed her some bad genetics. It's a huge contrast to the manga version, were her appearance is pretty, but her personality is not. It's a great encapsulation of her role in the story, and of the cast in general, where outward appearances and how we think of people don't match up with the reality of who they actually are.

There's nothing wrong with either liking or disliking this show. Some people have pointed out some valid reasons why they think this show is not very good. The sad thing is that most people that don't like it seem to simply be jumping on the hatewagon, dissing the show for really stupid reasons and being extremely childish about it.

Episode 1
I've been calling Aku no Hana "Rotoscope: the Anime" ever since I heard about it's weird design choices. Rotoscoping has been used in animation for a very long time, but it's almost never used for very long because it looks ugly and unatural unless a lot of extra time is spent on it. This time isn't available for TV anime, so it was pretty certain that the show was going to look ugly. And so I came in with the expectation that while Aku no Hana was an interesting experiment, it was going to be horrid. What happened? I liked it. And quite a bit at that.
Sure the character designs are ugly (which isn't really an issue) and the animation is hideous, but everything else is quite good to fantastic. The standouts are really nice backgrounds by Studio Pablo, strong and assured direction, good sound design, and dialogue that scans like things people will actually say. Even though episode 1 is mostly a mood piece where not a whole lot happens, I found it pretty engrossing. I'm really looking forward to see what they'll decide to do from here on in.

Hmm. Not exactly. She's not viewed as ugly either, iirc. More like, "she'd be approachable if she wasn't a bitch." She's not held up on a pedestal like Saeki is, she's an outcast through and through. But her design in the manga helps sell that whole "devil/temptress" vibe, where as here I'm not sure they've sold that as well. I'll be able to make a better judgement in the next episode. It's possible the anime may pull it off.

She's not class queen material like Saeki, but I think the guys would be lusting after her if she weren't a freaky loner girl who looks like she's contemplating the best strategy for when the class is selected for Battle Royale. |

Also I've got my answer as to what the real life cast looks like Both male actors are also providing the voices for their characters

Looking at the pictures I think they did a pretty good job of capturing the first two with the rotoscoping.
The 2nd two characters do look a bit different from their rotoscoped counterparts, but that could also be the different hairstyles.
