Most people theorize it takes place in 2010, but the level of technology used suggests '04-'05 to me. |

@Zantetsuken:
1. Do not trust TV tropes; while it is fun and a form of intercrack, it, like the other wiki, can be edited by anyone. 2. There is no set time for anything in the series; there's been speculation of this series occuring in 2001, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2010, but nothing has actually been confirmed yet (I say it takes place in 2009, but I digress). I'm guessing you read this on the WMG page for this series on TV tropes, on which Speculation Hell breaks loose. Do not take any of these theories as fact, for most of them (the one's that aren't as big as the others especially) are a load of bollocks.

We are given only two clues about the precise year--First is a reference to it being near the beginning of the 21st century (yeah really vague), and second is the fact that Valentine's Day falls on a Monday in "The Intrigues of Haruhi Suzumiya" (the seventh book). Direct references to the year are deliberately left out--such as in Disappearances, where Kyon goes back in time, he only describes the date as "July 7th, three years ago" instead of the actual number of the year whether in the international Gregorian calendar or in the Japanese regnal years in which it is year X of the current emperor's reign.

If the two dates had been seperated by Endless Eight we could imagine that the ending year could well be several thousands of years later and thus the day would be shifted...but alas, it isn't. Haruhi just is god, so we have to deal with it....also the books were written in different years to I imagine the author used a different calander each time.

I think it's pretty clear that the year is being intentionally obscured. |

Probably a good idea until the novels are completed, since you'd want the date to make sense given the 'real world' date when the final novel comes out. Personally, I would like to see a concrete date slapped on at that point, though. |
