Ah, just the sort of sweet, pleasant episode I was looking for. I hope Hinata's plan works out well. If this were more of a gag-based series I'd expect something to go wrong as a matter of course, but as things stand I think they have a good chance of pulling it off.
I wonder what happened to Crunchyroll.

Ep 2
Argh! [Scratches at the hives breaking out on his arms and back vigorously] This series is seriously adorable. And I mean seriously. Man, talk about the "cute girls doing cute things" genre in full swing! It is almost too sweet for me. Almost.... But this series is definitely not for the weak of heart. I must admit I liked the various features they showed on the way up the mountain. For me they were a nice added spice to the effort. It occured to me that season one was about 40 minutes length total (which includes the OVA). By the next ep we will already have surpassed that total. This really hit home as I was watching them walk to the starting point of the mountain trail. In any event am looking forward to the next ep. ^^

Ep 3
Now that was sweet. It is nice to see the series touch on some super basic aspects of mountain climbing like they did in this ep. Also nice to see that they seem to have settled on a "standard" OP and ED finally. ^^ Anyone else know what the reference to the 88 monks was, btw? And why were the statues all the way up there? Was it a local thing based on older history of that place in particular or was it referring to a larger backdrop?

Just finished watching the 2nd and 3rd episode and so far this season is really excellent. Hinta decided to surprise Aoi that they were climbing Mt. Mitsutouge to see a wonderful view of Mt. Fuji at the top. Whilst all's well with Kaede and Kokona distracting her (I'm willingly to bet Aoi's into sci-fi that or just UFO's) alas she notices the view of Mt. Fuji earlier then expected. As the climbing became more difficult for Aoi, Kaede gives a simple advice about climbing (that could even be applied in real life). Later on they found a steep cliff but thankfully Aoi makes it through the trek from the advice again from Kaede (then again she is the only one that really trek through mountains so it makes sense). By the end of the 3rd episode Hinta figured out Aoi already knows and they see a beautiful view of Mt. Fuji before the top. Will they make next episode? Who knows. The opening animation makes me reckon 8-Bit is trying to outdo what Shaft does with their opening. If I have to award best opening animation this will most certainly win due to the creativity it has. I'm really liking this one so far and very excited to see where this one goes. I'm curious how much this season adapts given the first season (including the unaired 13th episode) adapted only the first volume from what I heard. So far there's 6 volumes and a 7th volume coming next month so they got plenty of material to work on for the amount of episodes (and length) they've got. Anyway really excited to see where this cute anime about climbing goes.

Kaeda is an excellent Sempai to Aoi. She strikes me as nature leader. It's really, really a shame that this is a 10 minutes long show - I could see it being a fun one cour 20+ minutes per episode show. I feel that each episode is too short. Seriously, this could have been one of the contenders for the Cute Girls doing Cute Things anime of the season (in the vein of GochiUsa or Kirno Mosiac, only that the focus is on Mountaineering) if not for it's short format.

This anime really makes me want to go hiking, which means it's accomplishing what I assume it set out to do. When a show can do that, it's very good in my book. I'd love to be able to see the view they saw at the end of the episode in real life.
Can't underestimate the moe aspect of the show either. The girls are all super cute, especially Kokona. I could watch them climb mountains for hours.

This show is seriously perfect and amazing. Holy crap the feel-good emotions and healing. It's perfect for summer too, it's got me feeling happy from something as simple as looking out my window.
I did a fair amount of hiking with my family as a kid; the trials and emotions portrayed in ep. 4 were simply strikingly reminiscent. But it's the sentimentality the girls attach to the experience which really gets me. I feel like I'm living their joy. There's not a lot of anime which can match that. |

I used to do things like hiking... when I was around the girls' ages... which was an annoyingly long time ago.
Anyway, episode 4. I'm somewhat curious why they didn't even consider taking the easier path down, or, for that matter, taking the ropeway. I realize Aoi has her fear of heights, but arguments could still be made after the discomfort she had on the way up for avoiding a couple more hours of it on the way back down. Well, I don't object to an onsen scene. Moar Kaede-service, pls. Putting that aside, this anime still gives me a serious case of the warm-fuzzies. Watching the girls enjoy themselves doing this sort of thing is just wonderful.

Yama no Sume delivers again in the fourth episode. It's probably THE best Moe show of the season (no disrespect to Hanayamata, which is also good) and well done at that, so I am quite surprised it isn't getting the kind of attention Kirno Mosiac or Gochi Usa got.

Ep 4
It is totally true. Descending from high places can be way more painful that ascending them. Man do your feet, knees and legs HURT - both in process and especially afterwards. Whoever thought of the idea of putting an onsen at the bottom of a mountain should receive an international award of recognition for the benefit of humanity! Just remembering how painful some descents I underwent over the years with nothing like that makes me jealous! And no. Showers do not do much for aching muscles. Anyway I agree that Yame no Susume seems to be off of many people's radar screens this season, which is a pity. In a way, though, it is... umm... "simpler" or more "matter of fact" than series like KinIro or GochUsa. While KinIro and GochUsa put way more emphasis on the characters of the girls interacting (regardless of what they do), both Hanayamata and Yama no Susume have a much bigger emphasis on the THINGS that the cute girls are doing. (That is, the "cgdct" genre, while emphasizing the letter t of the equation.) Even then, Hanayamata carries with it more % wise of the things they do (Yosakoi) having more qualities of being "cute", so to speak, while Yama no Susume's "things" are not "cute" in the same way, but are quite different - perhaps one could contrast the aesthetics of both with words like "exotic, inspiring and high energy" with "wholesome, quiet and patient". And in some ways the way the characters and stories are presented mirror the qualities of the aesthetics. I guess in a way I am not surprised this series has not received a lot of attention, but even so in my opinion it is still a pity. Because the emphasis here is more on what they do and what they do is not "flashy" it allows the natural qualities of the girls to jump out more by the fact that they do not have the magnifying glass focused on their characters as an end in and of itself anywhere near as much. In some ways it makes the "moe power" more intense. ^^

Ep 4 was really great end to what others set-up, and seeing Aoi's different emotions about the climb was fun, I as happy see she thought the view from the top was worth the effort and that she felt less fear going back down, the longer episode format once again made me really glad it isn't super short like S1.

I was pleased they showed the girls climbing down, because that's an integral part of the experience works of fiction usually omit. Going up isn't all there is to hiking!
Aoi complains a lot, but in the end she always finds that the effort is worth it. A couple more trips like this and she'll fall in love with hiking.
