I still continue to underestimate just how strong the characters from shounen series are. Pretty much all of them do better than I expect them to. The exception to this is Luffy but I suspect that's because I'm underestimaing Accelerator. Lelouch and Kyon don't do nearly as well as I thought they would. Lelouch should still be one of the strongest characters but I think he's probably going to have to do a bit of work if he wants to win. Tomoya, Yuzuru and Koyomi also didn't do as well as I thought. Maybe I'm still underestimating just how strong the shounen characters are and the performances are better than I think they are.

Isn't that more to do with familiarity and that shounen is a big selling genre?

Seeing Ayumu in the exhibition reminds me that he didn't enter the tourney. Why again? He did win an exhibition during regular season...

And a Lancer vs Lancer match would have been appreciated, albeit predictable. (Though, it's not like a Gil rape isn't predictable as is...)

Perhaps. The females from the shounen series tend to do quite badly in ISML. I thought it may have been because those series weren't popular with the ISML voters but I think it's more the female characters aren't very popular.

Lancer vs. Gilgamesh was the toughest call for me. Both are pretty cool characters. I eventually went with Gilgamesh since he's a great antagonist, something anime could use more of. As good a character as Lancer is, it's not as hard to find other anime characters like him as it is to find other anime characters like Gilgamesh, imo.

Char vs. Kenshiro is a wonderful match on paper, in the sense of a match-up between two epic, classic anime male characters. Really nice match-up there.

It's a bit surprising, yeah. I think a lot of it comes down to the shonen male leads having name recognition on their side. People might not love them to death, but they'll vote for them against an opponent that they don't know as well.

Even taking this into account, though, I'm impressed at how well Edward Elric is doing. He looks to be right up there amongst the other big vote-getters in these exhibition matches, and that really is surprising to me. I think that the Full Metal Alchemist is a really good character, but I didn't think he'd do that well in ISML. For me, it's a bit of a pleasant surprise.
