Casting speed, yes. This has already been confirmed. 'package', no. As for Keroko, no official stories yet, but the background has some references. I'm not counting the part where she went berserk because of Lotte (that's berserk, not dark) but she did go dark in her childhood a lot (into the past 1 has a light example of this) against Reinforce, a few times during the timeskip, and inside the Cradle.

But Nanoha does not have a higher rank than what she currently has because she doesnt want to have it. If she was as ambitious as Hayate, she would have been SS already. Same goes for Fate. They are both satisfied with their current ranks and positions and have not striven for better.

Also, those ranks do not represent their magic power (you just need to pass a test to rise up in ranks), so we can just speculate who actually has the most fire power. If we do speculate, then I do agree with you - Hayate can surely match Nanoha in fire power, though I may also say not as effectively, since Hayate employs slow-casting ceremonial spells instead of quicker-casting ones like Nanoha. However, Hayate's ceremonial spells contain status effects and other side effects, making them more useful in respective situations...

Actually, the 'Nanoha doesn't have a higher rank because she doesn't want it' is her millitary rank, not her mage rank.

The test involves various aspect, such as theoretical knowledge, but mostly the practical aplication of magic. In other words: What can you do with what you've got.

However, every time powerlevels are measured, they use mage ranks.

Nanoha, episode 4: 'I am originally S+, so two ranks down makes me a AA, so soon I might have a tough time going against all of you alone'

Lucino, episode 12: 'energy charge detected, estimated at S-rank!'

And so on, and so on.

This is still a beta-test, as you can see, but I feel the urge to ask someone to help me check it. It was last week's work...but I couldn't find the time to dig it up, I'm just too messy sometimes.

Hope this isn't all Greek to you. Sorry for the change in writing style, most of it's in Ashcroft's PoV. Ironically the earlier part is later work, but the spells themselves were the original last week's work. Ergo, I wrote the text before writing a foreword.

SPECIAL SECTION: Ashcroft's Chained Arrays.

Ashcroft has been working on, since a period in the unknown past, on 5 spells. If he could ever complete these 5 spells, he once confided in his kouhai Cecile Arkham, then and only then would he take any tests beyond his current level of B+. Unfortunately, due to lack of any further information from Ashcroft, and his still-apparent lack of motivation, it may be safely suspected that he has yet to actually complete them.

However, Ashcroft's notes were rather illegally, albeit accidentally raided by Cecile and Acous while looking for a certain piece of (overdue) paperwork, and some rather disturbing details concerning them were obtained. Ashcroft, being the chronically forgetful person he is, as the duo found, seems to periodically write many notes about the smallest to the biggest of things, just so he never forgets.

(Although with the way his quarters looked, this was, and is still probably the mystery of the ages: How does he find his meticulously taken notes anyway?)

(Unravelled Chains: Enigma/Colossus): Chained Array ZERO

This is the prerequisite to my Chained Arrays, which I fear I must admit that I have longed to activate, but have been unable to do so due to prevailing circumstances which I cannot describe yet. There is still the chance that these notes may be found, despite the state that my current quarters are in. I have not included this in my list of Chained Arrays, for the reason that it is not truly a "chained" Array, but rather it could be better described as the "chains".

In a way, suffice it to say that this will be the unveiling of my greatest masterpiece of an illusion: the final illusion of "Ashcroft Ravenholm".

I would believe this to be one of my most meticulously created spells so far. It should rightfully utilize, as I decided during one of my personal brainstorming sessions, the concept of the Gauntlet, the Binding Spell concept, as well as making use of the alternative 'magicrypt' abilities of my Armed Device, which, admittedly, I have only put thus far to rather petty purposes.

To put it simply, I would call this "The never-ending shielding spell", if only I did not have a better name for it, which I just so happen to.

The steps undertaken by this spell are rather, I believe, unheard of, and are as follows:
(This is all still theorizing on my part, although I do not doubt its possibility too much.)

- The further development of 2 abilities of Enigma and Colossus, which I will not state at the present time, save (just to jog my oft failing memory) that it will "keep that which is mine mine, and cause that which are others' to become mine as well."
- To use all my remaining magic, excluding that which needed to generate the appropos illusions (which would preferably less than 10% of my total pool), to generate a mass of magical chains, similar to those of a Binding Spell, which are reinforced by Gauntlet, to keep them from dispersing.
- To bind magic with magic, using the aforementioned 'chains', and cut the flow of the magic into pieces by constricting the magical current from the source to the actual location of the magical clash.
- To assimilate the other party's magic into that of my own (which is made much easier by the partially cut off flow), and immediate expending the obtained magic on the development of more chains.
- To prevent the reverse, that is, the enemy stealing my leftover magic by the means which are stated above in the first step of this spell, albeit contiguously applied.
- This should therefore render any form of absorbtion of my magic impossible, as I will still be in control of it (or to put it simply, the opponent may have a key, but I have the master key), unless the opponent has a method or measure of magic control and/or absorbtion which is equal to or greater than my own, in which case we would either both have the key, or in the case in which there is too wide a gap in our levels (with me at detriment), then my key would be rendered, unfortunately, redundant.
- This spell would then lead up to either the second or the third of the Chained Arrays, if successful.
-I am, however, unsure how long I can keep this move up. I fear it may be no more than a matter of seconds, even if I somehow manage to create it.

Additional Logistics Required for This Spell That I have yet to Accomplish:
- Training on both physical and mental stamina.
- Training on multitasking spells with much greater effectiveness and efficiency than before.

(Sanctuary of the Nightmare: Hades): Chained Array 2.

This is the simplest of my 5 Chained Arrays, and is also the only one of my spells that is made specifically for killing the opponent. Once the chains in Chained Array 1 have gathered in sufficient numbers, I can then use them as a flexible Spell to bind and crush the opponent(s). It will be extremely difficult to dodge, due to the inherently flexible nature of chains, and it is also for this reason that I have yet to give it a classification: Shooting, Wide Area Emission or Bombardment. Perhaps we shall see what it can do first before I put it under any umbrella. Unfortunately, I believe this ability would also share the same time limit as its source, as the after-effects of the first move would still, most likely, be upon me.

(Hell's Gauntlet): Chained Array 3.

A lead-up from the First Chained Array, this creates a massive illusion, only possible because of the insanely high amounts of leftover magic I would have keyed in to my name by Array 1. This illusion would be that of the most deadly sort, one which utilizes the best tactic when one has run out of resources: to retreat. However, one wrong step on the part of the opposing end will most certainly result in, as the title states, hell on earth. I shall not say what hell I have prepared to unleash on the foe.

It, too, will be similarly limited by the First Chain Array. I feel that anything less than that would render me inhuman somehow.

(Phantom Spire): Chained Array 4.

Related to Chained Array 5, and as of now, an entirely un-theorized spell. A concept header for it would be:

Personality: Cecile is quite a sunny, straightfoward person, much more so than her most respected senior (sempai) Ashcroft, who's quite stone-cold on the job, and her immediate superior, Acous Verossa, who's quite the poker-face himself. She tends to, however, take things quite lightly, which is often a constant (if mostly the only) source of hilarity among them. Not to be underestimated, though, is her ability to learn from her mistakes (which she makes many a time and oft) quickly enough to survive making the worst of them in battle, and also, her determination to get what she believes in done.

However, she is surprisingly cheerful even when she's unloading her potential biohazards on the opposing end in combat, which has resulted in more than a few raised eyebrows among her superiors.

History:

When she was in her early teens, she was caught in the Cranagan Airport Incident, but was successfully rescued from the scene by the Aces. However, this event left an indelible mark on her, one which would drive many of her actions in the future.

She originally joined the TSAB as an aspiring Aerial Mage, but was noticed by Ashcroft (who was actually just walking by) for having an affinity that would be able to serve its purpose better in the Investigations Department. Following some discussion with his superiors, Ashcroft pulled a rather clandestine headhunt on her, and promptly (with the paperwork thankfully not done by him) whisked her under his wing.

Although this was pretty much a slap in the face for her original objective, she, following much usage of soft power on her future teacher's part, agreed to his reqest. She then begun a well-planned(if sometimes traumatic and extreme) training under his tutelage, and during that period of time grew a great deal, eventually becoming the equal if not the superior of her teacher, which was admitted to, even by him. Throughout this period, he refused to be called "teacher" by her, and got her compliance on that, but even to the end he failed to have her discard her calling him senior or "sempai".

It is possible that the approval given was due in part to due consideration having been given to the suitability of her element, but also in part due to a certain amount of vested interest in Ashcroft as well.

Eventually, after getting some tasks of her own under her belt, she was approached by Acous Verossa some months after the Saint's Cradle Incident: to put her skills to a task that would be challenging, and also of personal interest to her: an investigation into the illegal trafficking of Lost Logia.

Unsurprisingly, she readily agreed.

General Fighting and Magic Style: The old saying goes, like master, like pupil; Cecile learnt how to battle with and without her Armed Device while under Ashcroft's tutelage. She, however, specializes in the art of soujutsu (whereas her teacher is a swordsman), while being highly skilled with many other modes of combat. In unarmed battle, her style is like her teacher's, a variation of Ninjutsu, but instead of adding illusions, she adds some equally deadly cocktails to the mix.

Ashcroft's Armed Device: Lesathe's physical appearance was covered above; it is actually a polearm with a changable form of point. There are at least 10 variations, some of which can be used simultaneously. Just for some; there's a corkscrew, a skylar, a halberd, a sword breaker, etc, etc.

It speaks English, possibly because Cecile isn't a good study in languages...

Barrier Jacket: A black figure-hugging bodysuit, with a dark grey zipped-up vest at the top that extends to her cheek-level. There's an additional hood at the back, too. The only striking color on her Barrier Jacket would be a green flame-like streak that runs up her left sleeve.

Her name is from this innocent-girl character from Dangerous Liaisons (fits, I think), and her surname I think is quite guess-able from here (Okay, it's from the Arkham Asylum.) Lesathe is the Venomancer from DoTA.

*Sigh* What a rip-off I am today...But rest assured I shall do my best not to rip off ANY of Lesathe's attacks in her spell list.

That's why I get to the conclusion that mage rank is not necessarily power rank. Nanoha, Fate, and Hayate passed tests to get to their current mage ranks, S+, S+ and SS respectively, if I recall correctly, just as how Teana and Subaru did. Hayate was the one who made an effort to get up to SS in order to become a Commander. Nanoha and Fate, on the other hand, are not interested in taking those tests, since they are satisfied with their current ranks. Power ranks are then another category, which uses the same letters.

Another reason to believe that mage ranks != power ranks is how the spell's power changes depending on how much mana or cartridges the mage uses when casting the spell. That last Starlight Breaker surely exceeded S+ in power, so it can be said that Nanoha has a power rank of over S+.

That's how I see it anyway, after giving this issue much thought. Any other ideas?

They were being tested on whether they had the skill to back up the power. Note that after the test, Nanoha also said that it'd be dangerous to keep them at C-rank for anothe half year. This makes no sense if mage ranks did not mean powerlevels. They already were B-rank mages, the test was merely to make it official.

The only thing I recall was that Nanoha was not interested in rising through the millitary ranks, I don't recall mage ranks ever being mentioned. In fact, every time they are mentioned, its in connection to powerlevels.

Mage rankings are the standard power the mage in question can achieve. For AAA Nanoha to boost her Starlight Breaker to S she needed a ten-second charge (pre-A's) or a cartridge spam (post-A's). To compare, its like a car that can go 200 KM/H, but if you put nitro under it it can suddenly go a lot faster. However, that doesn't change the fact that without nitro, the car still can't go faster then 200 KM/H.
