Just having the Kou clan stop working and boycotting their jobs ended up causing half of the entire Saiunkoku country to cease functioning. And they aren't even the most powerful clan, just 2nd best.

Besides, the fact that for all of Ryuuren's strangeness... the fact that the Ran clan literally placed their entire future on Ryuuren even if he doesn't like it one bit shows that there's more to being the leader of the Ran than just a powerful political leader. It can't be merely genius.

yeah, not simply that... a leader of the Ran clan is also someone who can't be manipulated by people for their own political gains (which is clearly exhibited by Ryuuren)

I can remember something Shuurei said about Ryuuren in the last part of season 1 (when he was consoling her... telling her it's alright to cry...), then Ryuuren replies that 'that's what it means to be Ran Ryuuren'

/me goes to look it up...

Shuurei mentioned '...you know a lot about the phenomenal (or everything that's going on)', to which Ryuuren mentioned that reply --> like, "knowing a lot about the phenomenal is what it means to be Ran Ryuuren"

Another ability of Ryuuren is that he can get into literally anywhere... And that's gotta count for something among a clan that seems very information driven. I think if the Kou family holds the work power, the Ran family holds the information. But that's just what I thought when I kept hearing Shuuei mention the Ran intelligence network. ^^

This is a link to a Solicitations thread for Geneon. In the thread the root post which is linked the following is mentioned that's relevant to this thread.

Story of Saiunkoku Vol. #1 (also w/box) - 125 minutes - $29.98/39.98 - 07/24/2007

So at the very least it looks like the first series is licensed.

125 minutes suggests it's actually five episodes @ 25 minutes each. Still that's 8 DVDs.

And is the $40 price "w/box?" Is there anything in the box to make it worth $10?

Karin (also licensed by Geneon) follows a similar price structure - the MSRP is USD29.98 for Vol. 1, and USD39.98 for Vol. 1 with the artbox. As listed on RightStuf, both Vol. 1 editions have the same contain Episodes 1 - 4 (at 100 minutes) and has the creditless opening as the special feature.

Karin Vol. 1 @ RightStuf
Karin Vol. 1 With Box @ RightStuf

Box=place to store dvds-but isn't a set of shelves much more cost effective-and greater capacity to boot? I admit-boxes are more pleasing to the eye-but not at 10 bucks extra.

OH MY GOD!!! Genon seem to have butchered this big time. Some of the name changes i can get by (Shi Ryuuki becoming Ryuki Shi for example) However!!! they've DESICRATED SHUUREI!!!

They've renamed her Shurei Hong, i mean what the hell is with that. Since when did Kou translate as Hong.

I really wish these companies would learn we arent thickos and stop changing things as they please, its ruddy annoying, and stops me from buying more DVD boxsets. They complain about fansubs, but frankly after the disapointing subs of the past 3 shows i bough, frankly i can understand why people prefer fansubs over retail dvd's

And this is one of the series i would of bought right from the outset aswell *sobs*

Just out of curiosity, where did you get that information - did you watch a preview at a convention? Because I haven't seen anything on ANN, AoD, or the usual suspects for R1 coverage.

And technically, Shuurei's surname (紅) does translate to Hong in Mandarin Chinese. Kou is just the Japanese pronounciation of the kanji.

Although if what you're saying is true, that is an extremely strange move for Geneon to make - to Chinese-ify Shuurei's surname but keep the others untouched...

I was hunting around for a place to pre order the DVD's and found it, here's whats on the box back:

Quote:
Saiunkoku is a country with eight powerful houses governed by one emperor. However, the new leader Ryuki Shi doesn't care for his new role and is rumored to spend his days chasing after noblemen in his court. Enter Shurei Hong, a princess whose family has fallen upon hard times. Her dreams of becoming a government official are unattainable since she is a woman, but a twist of fate gives her the chance of a lifetime. If she agrees to become the emperor's consort and turn him into a respectable ruler, she will be greatly rewarded...
Give me a few mins and i'll find the site again

Is this series truly licensed by Geneon to be released by 7/24/07? I have not found anything on their websites or any other sites that I usually buy DVDs from. AniDB and AnimeNFO both don't have listed under the Geneon.

Anime News Network, The Right Stuf, and Amazon.com are showing a release date of August 28, 2007, from Geneon.

Thanks. It was strange that Geneon did not have it on their website as well. It looks like it was delayed. I wonder if they are making some last minute changes... like someone's last name...

Geneon's web site doesn't have many titles listed for August release. Maybe their web site hasn't loaded the new August titles yet?

I think they should keep the Japanese pronouciation, because some of these names sounds really silly or strange in Chinese. A few are not even pronounceable. Kou Shuurei would be "Hong XiuLi", which is akin to a farm girl's name. Shi Ryuuki (紫劉輝) doesn't even looked like a name, since Ryu or Liu is usually a surname. The author had no idea obviously.

It's not a strange move though... Official translations often use Chinese pronunciations for Chinese words. For example, the name of Chinese Iron Chef is pronounced "Chin Kenichi" in Japanese, but in the American version his name is always pronounced "Chen", the real mandarin pronunciation. Officially, Japanese are often sensitive to pronunciation of Chinese words when exporting their pop culture.

Do you mean that Japanese people don't like it when a Chinese person whose name is rendered as 'Chin Kenichi' in Japanese becomes 'Chen Kenichi' when Iron Chef is translated into English?

I can see how that might work for Iron Chef, since the show isn't trying to simulate a non-Japanese cultural environment. But Saiunkoku is a fantasy setting that is supposed to simulate imperial China...

No, I mean the other way around. They wanted pronounce it in mandarin when translating Chinese name. If you read what I wrote carefully, I am in favorite of keeping Japanese-pronunciations because those names are not really Chinese names. They are fantasy Chinese-esque names that sounded silly in actual Chinese.

I just watched the first episode on Veoh and personally, I think Shuurei is funny when she yells and stuff (just like Masahiro in Shounen Onmyouji! Woo). I knew three things. One: that the Shou Taichi guy was gonna offer her gold pieces, two: when Kouyuu Li was gonna yell at that Ran Shuuei person, and three: that the guy at the end is Shi Ryuuki. Yay for my chinese zodiac being rooster! Woohoo! I think I might buy the DVD later. Oh! The english cast has been revealed.
