At first, I got Elfen Lied vibes... but then it went time stopping and practically God mode, and Diclonius technically aren't even psychic

The concept is interesting, but at the same time I always have a problem with this concept- Akira, Serial Experiment Lain, Madoka, and any other series where someone goes to become God (and generally stay God) are watchable, but they don't rank highly on my list.

That's because, as you mentioned in the initial post, the name "Lucy" is commonly used for being that are the first of their type when it comes to a next stage of human evolution (with Elfen Lied being one example of it).

The term itself comes from the skeleton remains of a female primate from over 3 million years ago that can be used as an example of how humans have evolved from apes.

And all this despicable behavior is played for laughs.

All I wanted to do was to watch the heartwarming Jidai-Geki Neko Zamurai, and had the whole experience ruined by this repulsive trailer in a Taiwanese Cinema.

Well, fuck you Scarlet Johanassen, I'll be cheering for your character to die when Avengers 2 comes out, if you think murdering Asians for not speaking English is so "funny."
talk about looking for stuff to be offended by for the sake of being offended.

By your logic, every movie/tv show ever made either by the west or east that has any sort of action in it is guilty.

Armageddon was racist against Chinese and French for blowing up their city, Pacific Rim was also biased against Asians because the Kaijuus lolpwned Japan and Crimson Typhoon turned out to be a total jobber. Hell, Godzilla can probably sue for species discrimination, poor guy always gets shot at.

Jack Bauer is the exception, he doesn't discriminate, he pwns everyone equally.

Please do not distort my words out of context.

I am SPECIFICALLY angry at the notion presented in these garbage movies that its perfectly alright for a big white person to bitch slap (usually small and frail) Asians (like Wolverine did), if not outright murder them (like Lucy apparently does in the trailer), on their homeland for not speaking English for them.

ON ASIAN SOIL.

I take it (no-sarcasm at all intended) that you are a native born English speaker, and hence never had to grow up being shamed into believing that speaking your language is crude, shameful, evil and at best stupid in western countries, and never had feel the pain of being roared at to "Speak English or Get Out, Gook." Fair enough.

Now these films are basically saying
(1) To Asians: Look out! Speak English even on your own homeland or foreigners have the God Given Right to bully you for not being a good little servant.
(2) To Westerners: Any Asian who does not dutifully speak English for you ON THEIR HOMELAND is an insubordinate servant who deserves whats coming to him.

Of course, literates like us won't be that affected by the message it conveys.

But to the masses of illiterate and apathetic Y-Generation to which films are REALLY the target of, they only serve to re-affirm the backwards values of their conservative parents, and raise another generation of idiots who will bully another generation of young Asian yet.

Oh please, national/racial bias exists in just about every media in every country ever, it's been that way since humans learned how to communicate, you're a few millenia too late to start complaining about it.

Bzzzt, wrong. Didn't speak a lick of English until my teen years.

Nope, because I would've just told them to fk off.

Nope, 'cause I never found myself in a situation where I find it necessary to speak Chinese to people who don't. And if people had problems with hearing me speaking Chinese to other people who do, well, read above.

No, that's YOU reading too much into it from your rather biased viewpoint. You have about as much leg to stand on as a pizza restaurant owner complaining that a movie is promoting destroying pizza restaurants because there is a scene where one gets shot up.

personal bias on the other hand...

Yea, ok. The Atlas Shrugged movies has a better shot at converting a die-hard socialist than kids becoming racist, or for that matter learning anything from a typical scifi action flick.

Other than how hot Scarlet Johansson is, but they already knew that.

Racist crap aside, the movie only got worse when she became Bi**h Widow. Shooting that cab driver was nothing but for shock value.

(it WILL stir the toilet when #cancelcolbert finds it. XD)

Social justice warriors aside, it's a scene with very little context. It's not really a good idea to judge something like that when you don't really understand what came before or after it. Maybe she felt remorse? Maybe she was juiced up and not thinking straight? You just don't know without actually seeing the movie.

It is a deliberate choice to include that scene in the trailer for shock value, and that in itself could be something to be angry about, but immediately jumping to "that's racism" is a bit much.

Hey I didn't start that it was racist, just saying its a monsterous thing to do. If he WAS part of the gang or what ever, she should have just shot him anyway, nope bystander.

I stopped watching the newest Fast and Furious when the tank started running over people and killing a ton of innocent people and the crew barely ecknowledges it.

This movie is just gonna be a "men are expendable meat stacks to cut down, female power crap" I bet she doesn't hurt one woman. Atleast Kill Bill and female antags and shit.

Well Solace, I think we are basing this discussion on the trailer (as linked in an earlier post). Some seem to have seen the actual movie already (?) but most of us did not.

The offending scene is cut into the trailer like this, so of course we have to take it on its own.
It may be completely different in context with the actual movie, but we can not know this. However it certainly wasn't randomly included in the trailer. Cutting down a 2h movie into a couple of scenes, every second of that must have been carefully selected.
While I personally don't agree with the racial angle, 'wait until you see the full movie before any judgement' is not a viable option.

Fix it by having her shoot...

1) a Tire

2) a mirrior or window

3) pointing a gun at them

easy fix, takes a few minutes to re-edit and almost 0 cost...except that actors are getting freakin greedy.

But it is a broken scene. As in stupid and needs to be changed.

Can't wait for YMS to rip this scene apart. lol

She's becoming a monster, right? The plot takes the character and puts her in an extreme scenario. I'm not saying it's right, I'm only pointing out that there's more than one way to view the scene.

It's a horrible franchise to watch for the plot.

And that's bad because....? I'm not sure how this whole "everything must be balanced" viewpoint became so popular. I thought the whole point of equality is that we stop judging things differently because of human biology?

Sure it's viable. It requires reserving extreme judgements without knowing the context. I've already said the scene itself was likely deliberately placed for shock value. Obviously that has been achieved, and condemning that tactic is fair. But judging the character or the entire movie because of an out of context scene makes no sense to me.

Movie trailers lie. One of the worst offenders I've ever seen was Bridge to Terabithia. I worked at a video rental store when that was released on VHS/DVD. I made it a point to warn customers that it wasn't for little kids.

Another one was Lost in Translation. The trailer makes it look like a romantic comedy. It's not.

We have had MCs "roughing" up people since as early as Dirty Harry and Death Wish series or even the noir movie genre. It's here to play up the anti-hero and edgy card. And Luc Besson is known for being not quite subtle.

No need to march to hollywood with social justice signposts.
