Possible predecessor to Da Vinci’s most famous portrait unveiled

Quote:
GENEVA — The mystery behind the most enigmatic smile in art — Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” — just got a little more complicated.

In a coming-out party of sorts in Geneva, rounds of flashbulbs popped Thursday as the non-profit Mona Lisa Foundation pulled back the curtain to present what it claims is a predecessor of the world’s most famous portrait.

@vexx: I don't know, one bit of credit I have to give Catholicism is that they're not nearly as "Science hostile" as protestant denominations often are.

Now they do defend some dubious relics, but I think that's a different branch of the church. The more scholarly end, which is in focus here, tends to be fairly solid.

@RRW - Hm, that's incredibly intriguing that they have the confidence level to go public with it .. I was at a Da Vinci exhibit recently and there was discussion at length about the difficulty with authentication of some of Da Vinci's later works and some of the ones that were inspired by him and/or those that were created by his students.

For those that are unaware, there are an incredible number of "Mona Lisa" inspired paintings created by artists that either learned from Da Vinci or copied him produced during his lifetime or shortly after his death.

They were either "did not expected it to happen" or they were just "too enjoying the chase scene" (who aren't?)

Fox News apologises over live 'suicide' in Phoenix, Arizona

So they apologize for something horrible like this but never for their inaccurate reporting?

It just exposes what Fox "News" is really about at the bottom of the barrel - doing anything to keep eyeballs glued through the commercial breaks. "Snuff video" is just the one tiny extra step they pretend to stop short of.

<shrug> not that the other mega-corp broadcasters are hugely different. News is no longer a "community service to keep a license to broadcast", it is a profit center. That didn't *used* to be the case - it changed during the 80s along with deregulation of the broadcast industry (which also meant that the many independent stations could be gobbled up by the likes of Clear Channel, Fox, Disney, General Electric, etc).

Watch "The Newsroom" although it's a bit preachy and more than a little one sided

Nothing raged us off than the unexpected signing of the Cybercrime Bill, which had a unconstitutional provision calling for stiffer prison times for libelous online statements, but without being put through a public discussion and/or further consultation. The most dangerous thing about the libel provision is that it could be exploited by the privileged seeking protection from online criticism. Heck I even tried to get the EFF looking into it.

We're already a country who got blackmarked for having one of the worst environments for journalists, and then this. All because of a senator/cheeseball comedian who got owned for plagiarizing a blogger's entry and called it his own speech.

Just got an update that the huge typhoon is heading towards Tokyo! Currently forecast to hit on Monday.. Apparently at least 56 people have been injured. Not sure how many forum-goers are from the areas hit but .. Hope everyone stays safe and relatively dry.

Attempted Honor Killing of daughter by Afghan-Canadian Mother

Now for your fucked up quotes of the day.

Quote:
Then I stab her, stab her neck. She said, ‘No Mom!’ I said, It’s for your good. Let me finish

'She live with that wound,' she continued, pointing to her neck, 'she remembers me.' The experience 'will make her strong and give her wisdom. . . . It means she will give up her ways of living.'
