I'm also hoping the art direction will change a bit and be more flamboyant (the poster posted a while back looked pretty good).

If Phantom Blood is Gothic Horror meet Hokuto no Ken (with first chapters looking like Candy Candy), Battle Tendency is something like Indiana Jones meet Jackie Chan movies. Of Indiana Jones it have the adventure feel and the nazis. Of Jackie Chan movies, you have the training sequences that makes Drunken Master look tame, the bromance between the protag and his sidekick, and the protag himself who kicks ass and is RESOURCEFUL.

Some updates on what to expect from the Battle Tendency music:
https://twitter.com/taque68/status/270355078404263936 https://twitter.com/philknall/status/270446652198887425 Both tweets confirm that the soundtrack for Battle Tendency is going to feature quite a bit of vocal BGM, which is pretty much expected from Iwasaki. It should match the tone of the story nicely imo, being more upbeat and trendy in early 20s America instead of the more somber and dramatic classical tone which Phantom Blood has. --- http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B00A31KF7Y/ The description for the new OP - Bloody Stream also tells us what sort of musical mood they're trying to set for the second part of the series. It's supposed to be a jazzy and danceable song with vocals by Coda, and it is composed and arranged by Toshiyuki Omori (Dirty Pair, School Rumble), with lyrics by Saori Kodama (Hyouka OP/ED lyrics). --- http://ameblo.jp/ltothej/ Also, confirmation that the 2 rap tracks Iwasaki recorded with Lotus Juice last month are for Battle Tendency. They're battle themes apparently. |

If it was not for Araki's "bizarre" take on physics and anatomy, mundane things like a Rock - Paper - Scissors duel would not have been as intense.

Spoiler for most likely double post:
These types of poses are probably hamon stance. Instead studying martial art, the "vampire mangaka" learns the the kata from foreign fashion artwork.

The direction for this show is really saving it from it's low budget and making it something truly special in my eyes. I'm noticing a lot of shots that just don't really happen much anymore anime like for example the slow pan up to Dio's castle after Zeppeli's funeral scene for another scene there, use of the soundtrack in perfect timing to things happening on screen, that would have been a guaranteed jump cut in almost any other show and they'd have been totally separate scenes, but instead they opt for the smooth transition. Stuff like that was more common in the 80's and 90's and is something I've missed, those panning shots to establish mood and atmosphere. Even the transition to the eyecatch with Jojo glaring at Tarkus remains was fantastic stuff.
Just goes to show that animation budget and number of things on screen moving per second isn't everything, it's what you do and depict with the resources you have that often times makes all the difference in the world. Last edited by Kaioshin Sama; 2012-11-23 at 15:42. |
