RIP Megaupload.

I feel sorry for those who had legit back-ups for pictures, files, documents, etc. on that website and people who paid for the membership. Damn, that sucks.

These sites did not get into trouble (until now), which kind of begs the question what was happening before?
It's because MU only provided storage and no easy to find links, hence it felt safe. That model kept the separation between the links and the files and limited the connections between them.

The warez sites didn't host any illegal file, so it was hard to attack them.
MU always quickly accepted to delete reported stuff, so they could pretend they were doing legit business. It was hard for the the authorities to prove people were downloading stuff. Sure they could measure the traffic, but I don't think they had to way to tell who was downloading what and when. And it's something they need to to back up their case in court.

I am really surprised it was taken down in such a brutish manner. Rapidshare won in court and I guess they didn't want to repeat that, so they went all out no questions asked.
Because I don't really see a difference between the two and if one survived, so would have the other if FBI did it the slow soft way.

The same way you can burn a CD from something you got off pirate bay, I guess. You just need a 3D printer.

Currently the printers can't make much more than plastic desk toys
Perfect.
I can't wait to pirate and print out some Warhammer 40k armies.
Though if this would be cheaper than even GameWorkshop's rediculous prices is doubtful.
Then I would print me some anime figurines next... hmmmmm poor anime industry is going to get hit yet another time

How much does 3D printing cost? Per unit, per volume, whatever is the deciding factor?

Neither Mathew Ho nor Asad Muhammad can vote, or buy beer.

They haven’t been accepted to college yet, though that might change after this story.

The 17-year-olds have already sent a (Lego) man into space.

Two weeks ago, Ho and Muhammad launched a homemade balloon carrying a Lego passenger and four cameras. It fell back down to Earth 97 minutes later with astonishing footage from an estimated 24 kilometres above sea level, three times the typical cruising altitude of a commercial aircraft.
Full article and video here.

I liked Mr. Ho's statement at the end of the video. "Initially you have no idea what you're doing. You just get started and then you find your roots(?) and go on. It gets easier and easier as you go on." I think this rings true for any explorer.

I also think these young men have a bright future in front of them.

A satellite defense system based on quantum dot technology

"In January 2007, China successfully tested an Anti-satellite (ASAT) missile
system by destroying their own defunct LEO satellite, which generated huge
amounts of space debris. This ASAT test raised worldwide concerns about the
vulnerability of satellites and other space assets and possibility of triggering an
arms race in space. In order to meet emerging challenges posed by such ASAT
missile systems, military strategists and researchers are developing novel
technologies to protect their space assets.

In view of the above, Raytheon Company has developed a counter measure
system using quantum dots to protect space assets such as satellites from missile
attacks. They have developed a decoy consisting of quantum dots of different
sizes and shapes that are engineered to emit radiation having a radiation profile
similar to that of the asset."
