You know, I really think the show keeps Akane's backstory vague aside from her gender and general situation because they want her to represent the hikkis and kids who are too depressed to face reality (due to various reasons) in Japan. Basically, the show is trying to push those who suffer the same anxiety & depression as Akane to move forward and and be better people. Those final lines that Rikka said to Akane really felt like words of encouragement for the (young?) audience who needs it. At the end of the day, Gridman is still a tokusatsu show with a moral message for the audience, even in anime form. I really like that.

But I agree that more episodes would've been great.

Akane's appearance in her world is merely an idealised avatar.
Rikka is based on Akane's real appearance.
Yuta was made to be Akane's lover, hence his seat being next to hers, but was made too well and thus fell in love with the "REAL Akane", whom Rikka resembles.

The last part of the ED with "Rikka" alone in the Winter thus has a double meaning, it's both Akane in the real world alone and Rikka in Akane's world alone at once. Even apart, they are together.

It could also be feasible to believe that the "Rikka" we see throughout the ED is actually Akane and the "Akane" we see was just her imagination.

It was an alright ending, but I still enjoyed the show overall.

yeah that is my problem with that last episode, things feel a lot rushed and a lot of missing explannations like since he could rebuild everything the kaijus destroyed it means which the dead peoples are back too???
or how the glasses guy was really useless in the end how poor used he was, it was pretty much like the fat guy in darling where he had a good start but at the end he was pretty much useless plot wise.

well even if we get a second season i really doubt will be about the same characters, because it's really feel like a "finished plot and another season could be just about "another person need help from grid man and not akane/rikka anymore.

I was thinking more along the lines of a second season that was more like 4 episode OVA format, but yeah, unless they change up how the story works, it doesn't seem like an actual second season could work in that world.

yeah the whole akane/rikka the sims world plote really does feel full closed and no more room for second season, since almost everything was closed and the only "loosen tiers" are more like plot holes and rush than actually something which could lead to another season, that world is pretty much saved and cleaned, ofcourse we still have "real world akana" being a issue if she don't learned nothing from this and keep being the same loner hikkikomori and repeat everything again.

i really hope so. because it's really looks like a "sort of toy...", you know for loner peoples, which is pretty common both female and male hikkikomori in japan having that "sort of toys" for when the "loniless burden start to be too big burden and they need to "release a little... .

...I'm so disappointed, I almost don't feel like writing anything.

Yeah, I know, it is my fault I had my expectations up after Darlin Frank-whatever, but you know, it was pretty good until the end.
They clearly at least needed one episode, maybe two. And yet they wasted time on stuff like Akane being turned into a Kaijuu... which Anti breaks free right away... and the bad guy just absorbs Akane. ...Umm, how about just absorbing her in the first place? If they really needed to kill off Anti, they had all the chance earlier. And he still isn't dead because a character apparently has the unexplained powers to save him.

Apparently, that character, along with some of the stuff in the last episode were references to the original show.
...So? That's not a free ticket.

And of course, not really enough development on the key character, Akane. Frankly, she just spent the entire season being angsty... and that's it!
And, yeah, I understand why they made her wake up in the "real" world, but considering the only redeeming quality of Akane is her appearance, the last thing I would want to see is a "real" person who is supposed to be Akane. AHHHH! MYEYES! MY EYES!!!

I'll say that the best done character in this anime is Anti. Isn't character development wonderful?
But he should have died in the end.

So, all is well if it ends well.
The same goes for the other way.
Perhaps I will thank the anime for all the thighs/feet fanart, but that is it.
Oh, and I guess it is nice that the visual quality is good for anime this day and age.

Haha, Trigger. Too many episodes and you screw up, too few episodes and you screw up. Maybe try 6 12-minute episodes or something next time. Even the best material can taste bad if the cook sucks.

There is a lot for me to think about now that the show is over, but my general take away is that I liked it but it felt like it could have been ... shorter? Part of me feels that the story itself is pretty compelling, but making it 12 episodes made it lose some focus in the middle here and there. Still a good watch.

That was sort of my take away from it as well, and it does frame the interactions between the 2 in a manner that makes sense, especially since I had been confused as what the ultimate point/subtext we were meant to take from what Rikka and Akane meant to each other.

Turns out, it was learning to love oneself, and accepting who you are in spite of any faults you might see in yourself. The point about how Rikka was "programmed" to never hate Akane now seems less of a thing Akane did to make sure she always had a friend by her side who accepted who she was and moreso a "I don't want the old me to hate the new me" type of deal. Yuuta falling in love with who Akane actually was (or at least, Rikka who is modeled after the real Akane) hits this point home quite well, I felt, even though the mystery about it was a bit misleading. Still well done.

At the same time, I do feel like I need to rewatch the series and take in how Akane and Rikka interacted with each other to see if it does fit as well as I think it does. The dream episode in particular makes me think there is more to read into it.

This makes me think that anyone who didn't watch this show would think it is some show about Rikka's thighs and Akane's boobs going by all the fanart, which given how much of it there is, seems to be what was the other message to take away from it

Nice to see the OG (Original Gridman) again, and playing Yume no Hero, too.

As someone on the Reddit thread point out, the entire show = 1Toku Gridman episode, only difference is that Gridman went through some hiccups.

It makes sense even without the whole Akane = Rikka thing. Rikka wanted Akane to remain with her, but she knew it was better for Akane to go back to the real world. It proves how much she cares about Akane, she put Akane's well-being over her own desire to stay with her.

To be fair, there is more to it than that.

Remember the Episode when Akane tries to trap the main trio into fantasy dreams? People couldn't help but notice that whilst Rikka and Utsumi's dreams were rehashes of previous events with Akane, Yuta's dream was a rehash of his first scene with Rikka but with Akane instead.

There's also the perennial question of why Rikka's shop had that all important junk.

Of course we do have to factor in the possibility that the creators might just be trolling with us.
