Reading the manga for this, I actually felt that DW would be something that Gonzo would adapt or make if they were still relevant. After watching first episode those vibes are even stronger especially with how colorful everything is.

Anyway, this was one of the shows I had planned following at the start of this season since I was already familiar with the source. Just as with the manga, the anime is solidly entertaining and having an older protag for once is honestly a nice change of pace.

First off, we have an official candidate for best OP of the season so far.

And this was one awesome episode, I'm loving all the characters so far, and the plot had me on the edge of my seat when the professor charged that coil. I'm really interested in where this is going to go and I'm glad I picked it up.

I think the familiarity could come from this being another varied take of the badass and child trope. Should expect good amount of interesting interaction and dynamic between the 2 main characters if done right and that already seem pretty promising as first episode goes.

Kyouma for one is an interesting fellow, because he seems to be left behind in the past or maybe it is by choice that he has not embraced the future. Skilled in use of non-coil physical projectiles and throwing grapnel ropes, drives a classic car that runs on expensive gasoline when everyone else is on electric. He does use a cell phone powered by a coil though as we saw in this ep, that said he might probably be one of the least affected if say one day Dimension W goes kaput. Who knows it just might happen given what we saw with the professor.

Mira, well she's pretty cute and has a personality that going to be a foil for Kyouma. Seems not totally helpless and might even be able to hold her own in a fight. I think it is likely her origin story will be tied in some way to the state of the story's futuristic world.

...Bare in mind that slap was from a android/cyborg (?). I doubt many could take one from her either.

Return of Chinese Electric Batman? Well, not really but close enough. It's interesting I'll give you that, but I'm still wary of the direction this series will go. The moment I see signs of MCXAndroid girl romance, I'm so out of here.

If anything we've seen signs of the opposite. Guy thinks she's just a tool.

I'm sure he will stop seeing her as just as tool as time goes by though. Still don't know how I would feel about a romance though.

Since I'm already familiar with the source I knew what I would be seeing, but this episode is just so awesome I was thrilled from beginning to end. Seriously this should be somewhat on par with Kyoani this season art-wise, something you hardly come across these days. Story is as good as I expected so that's a given.

All in all, I'm entertained. Definitely the pick of the season along with Boku dake ga inai machi.

Yeah, I was really reminded of Solty Rei when I saw this, with the older guy "bounty hunter type" and the green haired robot girl. Heck, he even has a little goatee type beard. And that OP! The last time I saw something so mismatched with a character like that dancing was in the ED of Yakitate!! Japan, "To All the Dreamers", even they are really nice dance moves.

Well, I'm adding this to my unending list of interesting animes this season. It does show a lot of promise.

I'm on board the "best OP of the season so far" train, and the episode itself was pretty stellar too. What it put me in mind of was Bones or old-school Sunrise (from the Bebop era), and Iwahara's trademark future noir vibe was in full force.

This series has a terrific staff top to bottom, maybe the best of the season. 3Hz doesn't have much of a track record but based on the premiere, they're up to the task. This one looks like a keeper.

Not even close, fella.

Maybe for animation scenes.

Yeah, I love OP's animation sequence, but I'm not too hot on the actual song. I think I need to listen to that more.

That was really good. I was particularly impressed with the animation. It's stylish, clean, and fluid. Having a strong adult as a protagonist is great, and that robutt is nice.

Can't say much about the plot yet, but the concept is interesting. Definitely a keeper.

As a fan of the manga I thought the first episode looked pretty good, though something felt a bit off as I was watching it. Having a quick look back it seems they've covered quite a lot of material in just one episode while also cutting/changing quite a bit of detail. Nothing that affects the plot so far but a lot of small details that flesh out the world and characters haven't been included already. I'll probably wait another episode or two but I'm really worried this is going to end up really rushed, or turns into a bit of a mess as excluded detail adds up.

I think it was a fine enough first episode. Animation was good and presentation was also good. Action that pulls you in is always a good thing. ...Especially after being disappointed by a certain war anime.
And once it was mentioned, it is true that it reminds me of Solty Ray for some reason. Not that I actually watched that, though I've seen the top information before.
And yeah, also kinda reminds me of Hei, but probably only the protagonist using strings part.

Also, I feel some devotement in the animation of the body. *looks at butt in the ED*

The little "coil" things definitely give off that "arc reactor" from Iron Man vibe. Especially since the android (and apparently her father too?) has one installed in their chest. Sorta like the Iron Man suits. Overall show seems good. Unless somehow this show goes down a really stupid direction I'll probably watch it all the way through just because there isn't much else I want to watch this winter season and the setting for this show is interesting.

Chalk me up among those who are getting a turn of the century anime vibe from this series. It definitely reminds me of the glory days of Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, and Trigun. Only with the better animation the current technology allows for. Darker than Black was the same way, which is probably why so many of the younger anime fans, for whom DtB was the first popular journey into that style that they encountered live, are seeing this as a spiritual successor to that show.

Maybe in animation, but music-wise it is not. Though it's not really a fair fight this season, since most seasons' OP music doesn't have to compete with something as iconic as the Lupin Theme for that title.

This felt like a weird mix of Solty Rei and Xenosaga. I mean, we have a futuristic setting, a cute android girl who met with a tough guy by accident, a mysterious new dimension which changed the entire world, and a genius scientist who created an android to replace —or maybe save— his daughter. Not that I mind, I absolutely loved Xenosaga and I enjoyed Solty Rei, so I actually kinda liked the first episode.

I didn't like everything though. The exposition was a bit forced here and there, and it was particularly funny when the show switched from an info dump by the radio to an info dump by the narrator. Another thing I didn't like is that Yurizaki basically almost crushed his own plan. He wanted Mira to continue a plan he was willing to die for, but didn't bother to check if she's gonna get caught up in that gigantic explosion? Poor girl was incapacitated immediately when Yurizaki began the process so it's not like she could have run away or hide.

But Mira is a bit like Momo in Solty's body and I really like the mood of the show, so I can easily tolerate this much for now.
