In case anyone missed it, Funimation announced at Otakon that they've licensed Summer Wars and plan to give it a "limited" US theatrical release. That's excellent to hear - I would love to be able to see this in a theatre.

That is great news. I'd love to have this on BD, it'd be amazing to watch. The only problem is their translation. Hopefully they do a good job. And BD subtitles are so much better on the eyes than DVD ones. With regards to the dubbing, I'm never happy with it so I won't pay much attention to it, lol.

This announcement came at a pretty perfect time for me-- They literarily announced the aquisition while I was watching it for the first time. So as soon as I'd finished it, I found that it had been licensed. Quite a pleasant surprise... Of course, it usually takes like, a year between FUNi announcing that they've licensed something, and them actually releasing it, so it'll still be quite a while before I can actually get the DVD/BluRay... Still awesome news, though.

For anyone lucky enough to live in Northern California, Summer Wars is showing at the Embarcadero Cinemas next Saturday the 24th at 7:00 as part of a special SFFS event. Really looking forward to seeing this one on a big screen - hopefully they don't cut it off with 5 minutes left like Viz Cinema did with 5 CM...

just watched this the other day. When I finished it i was slightly disappointed but i think it was because I was being overly critical on a few parts I disliked. I loved most of it though especially the ending with all of the family's reactions (really enjoyed the big cast). I started the movie thinking it was something different and while its not what I thought it was, i was still pleasantly surprised. Movies like these remind why I fell in love with animation.
I can't wait to see what hosada does next. Oh and digimon <3 |

My report on the screening of "Summer Wars" at the SFCFF (complete with yet another disruption of the ending):

well the movie was not bad or good to me. of course i loved the insane facial expressions he made while trying to decode the last security codes. the uncles character was very vague... you could not tell if he was a character with bad motives or good until near the end of the movie.
and the women in the family were both ignorant and arrogant at the same time when kazuma was totally overthrown by the A.I. "It's just a game, right? There is no way it'll affect reality, right?" serious? THE WOMEN ALL KNOW EVERYONE IN THE WORLD USES THE OZ NETWORK IN THEIR DAILY LIVES and it HAS THROWN THE WORLD INTO CHAOS BECAUSE OF THIS A.I. and the A.I. INDIRECTLY KILLED THEIR GRANDMOTHER (ok, it might have really been her time to go, but she could have had a chance if the doctors account was not stole by the A.I). how is it not clicking in their brain this A.I. is not just a game? sorry but that seriously pissed me straight off. that was going through my mind practically the whole movie after that happened. same with the idiot who took the huge ice cubes near the super computer which was to cool it down. i am glad kazuma punched him right in the face. Damn straight it was his fault, kazuma! aside from those complaints, summer wars might not be too far off where everyone is under one network and without it, the world will collapse. i can see it happening one day if every nation and country was at peace with each other. |

Just saw it.
Spoiler for film:
This was a truly excellent film, and I don't have much else to say. The animation, direction, music, characters, everything was rock solid. I liked this film so much I think I'll buy the BD when it comes out in America, because anime like this need to be supported more. It's simply that good. |

The US theatrical release schedule for Summer Wars is now available from Funimation.
* Dec 3-8 Chicago,IL- Siskel Film Center * Dec 10-16 Los Angeles, CA – AMC Covina 30 * Dec 24-30 San Francisco, CA- Landmark Bridge Theater * Dec 29-Jan 4 New York, NY- IFC Center * Jan 5-12 Boston, MA- Museum of Fine Arts * Jan 7-13 Denver, CO- Starz Film Center * Jan 7-13 Santa Fe, NM- CCA Cinematheque * Jan 14-20 Los Angeles, CA- Laemmle Sunset * Jan 21-27 Philadelphia, PA- Landmark Ritz at the Bourse * Jan 23-Feb 3 Honolulu, HI- Academy of Arts, * Jan 28-Feb 3 Seattle, WA- Landmark Varsity Putting it at the Museum of Fine Arts here in Boston means it won't get much of an audience in a city with half-a-million college students. You'd have thought one of our various art-houses in Cambridge or Boston would have picked it up. There are some rather striking omissions from this list -- Miami, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Kansas City, and Washington, DC, to name just a few obvious ones. Are anime viewers that rare in the American South and the "heartland?" Do you suppose these decisions tell us anything about how well Funimation's DVDs sell in various parts of the US?

Yeah i can imagine the city being pretty busy. Bummer.
I'm hoping for a cinema release here, though it'll probably happen in London, which i'm not very near. At least the Blu-ray release isn't that far away now.

Summer Wars amongst the 15 candidates for an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. Hot damn, I never saw this coming. It's not gonna win, or possibly make the final 3, but the fact it was considered makes me so glad.

If it had a national release with enough publicity earlier in the year, it may have had a chance at a final nomination. It'd never win though, Toy Story 3 is the winner this year. I still have to see that, lol.
