Ep 17 dedication at end of credits
I noticed at the end of ep 17 there was a dedication to "Umeko Ando". Not knowing who this was, a quick Google search revealed that she was a popular singer and performer in the Ainu tradition. Somewhat appropriate, given the theme of eps 16 and 17.
Apparently she passed away earlier this year... |

I'm not much into hip-hop, and I really don't like the opening song, but I still think SC rools. There are some hip-hop elements that work for the show tho...eg. when Fuu met Saganshougen Nagamichi (the guy who had his brother do beat-box in the background when he talked) in episode 8. That was one of the funniest things I've seen this season.
That song @ the end of ep 17 is awesome too. |

Sorry if this is random but is anyone else not bothered by a lack of story? I mean from the director of Bebop it's kind of expected almost. Bebop only had a few story episodes, yet it still remained mostly entertaining throughout. It was cool, funny, stylish, just like Champloo. I dunno, I just really like this series despite it not having much of a story.

The incredible feel and grahpics outweigh the lack of story development. If I were to name one thing bothering me is the lack of hip-hop the last 7 episodes. A few eps ago there were these 3 rapping farmers but that was way too forced. The absence of the original mixture of feudal Japan and Rap has been too long. hence everything "rappish" looks out of place. btw, beautifull song there whil mugen was "drowning" anyone knows the name?

Is episode 17 really that redeeming? I found the series absolutely fantastic at first, but it's gotten slightly stale in recent eps (I'm at 15). Of course, that's not to say that there weren't immensely beautiful episodes thrown in-between (like the first several, 12, etc.). Well, I'll wait and see... This should be good.

I have liked just about every ep so far. I'm curious to see which episodes people didnt like.
The latest 2 ep arc was really interesting and had me wanting to read up on the Ainu people. The parallels between their history and American-Indians is really amazing. *first Samurai Champloo DVD out 1/11/05* |

The ending song in episode 17 was very beautiful, especially considering it was sung in english by japanese (what's the title, by the way?). Shame this show didn't do well enough to stay on its original broadcast channel, but perhaps the hiphop style didn't appeal to people. I didn't like the opening song either at first and the lyrics didn't seem to sync properly with the beat to me, but after a few times I was already accustomed to it and I've gotten to like it. But then I don't really mind the hiphop style, it was even the main thing I listened to for a while (long time though, when stuff like Dela Soul, Run DMC, Tribe Called Quest was in, later on all the gangsta rap turned me off). Anyway, there's alot of good music in this anime, I think I may try out the OST(s?). As for the show itself, alot of random story bits while the main plot isn't adressed too often, but still those random sidestories are usually interesting in their own right. Definately a reminder of Cowboy Bebop. There are alot of small sidestories that haven't quite been finished up, like what happened to Kohza the pirate girl (the treasure was lost I assume, and she had nothing left), Shino who was freed from a life as a prostitute by Jin, or when Muugen will run into Yatsuha again (the girl that was undercover in the forger business, and said she was gonna marry Muugen at the end of ep15. I really had to laugh when she said that, that was hilarious). I suppose we'll never find out on most of those things, since they have to break off those sidestories at some point and they don't matter to the main story.
