I'm of the opinion that 99% of everything under the sun is invented already within the realm of fiction, so you're going to run cliches whether you like it or not. As such, it's all in how you execute them.

Heck, my entire shipping ideology is based on cliche (and thus my entire reason for me choosing anime over other types of fiction), for crying out loud.

So Akimoto is averse to fanart as well? Well I will be very surprised seeing the 2ch having something related just to spite him

About this article, I think this whole otaku having gripes with wota thing is so extremely funny.
At the end of the day, they're both the same, except one group at least gets off to real boobs xD Seriously, people who are bothered by this show or AKB in general need to lighten up. It's just a show, if you like it, then cool. If it's not your thing, why whine about it? Fact is, the only reason this show is viewed critically or rejected outright by some is because of its association with a popular idol group, and (otaku voice on) how terrible, how could we possibly like something that has to do with girls that not only have the nerve to actually exist but are also popular- ewwww, popular. (otaku voice off)

Seriously, if this was just another whacky Kawamori project without the AKB name, people would've just shut up and watched it, assuming it's the love child of Aquarion and Madoka or something.

That article was dumb, plain and simple :/
Plus, as someone who recently got past my superficial AKB stereotypes, they really are anything but plastic as it turns out. I never get when people are down on something that they haven't thoroughly investigated before they start moaning about it.

(I don't count myself as either group btw, I just happen to also have anime and asian drama/music among the media I consume and I couldn't care less about merchandising or obsessing about any of it. I'd not want restrict myself to any box by any name. Although if you do, more power to you of course.)

tl;dr why doesn't everyone just get along and enjoy the show? XD Or if not, whatever, they should ignore it, like they would've ignored any other show they weren't interested in.

thank you~~~ skullfaerie lol. Seriously even I used to hate AKB and after giving them a chance because of Beginner, I grew to like them.

Kotaku always got the thing against AKB..idk what but they never talked about AKB favorably before..or at least even try to be neutral about...
Hope their writers don't live in Japan right now..:P

A show that gives me headaches while watching it. Facepalm event every now and then from episode 1 and 2. And even if the character design was okay and moe the dance routine or rather the way its been animated gives me jaw dropping reaction >.> then there goes mecha beams and idols using tazer on their magic want <.< there are lots to argue about like the other scene in first episode with the girl liking the guy >.> I drop down on my chair 0_o

BUT at least some scene or the story looks decent enough to entertain me. The story from episode one might be a bit tragic for being alone and working in factory instead of going to school. Then there goes the other girl with a father who is chief of an organization that's against entertainment........ okay that's the big wtf for me >_> banned entertainment and mecha will be sent to to blasting you if you get caught. Though the last one the yellow girl was to prove to the boy she can become an idol was a bit weak..... trash the BOY!!! (I sound like an idiot)

The animation is top notch but I think sunrise overdid it in some aspect that it doesn't look nice at all. Some scenes are pretty jarring that I would rather watched idol master perform than this.

The second episode prove to be good to story wise with the meeting of the girls. I liked that part. It entertains me and keeps me enough for watching it...... but there goes mecha robot shooting civilians and soldiers firing at kids just to catch them (even if not direct and the rounds used are like jelly like to stop them from moving) it still hard to swallow. Then the whole idol aura thing. Kirara -_- used for warping..... the hell.

I enjoyed the show but the same time it gives me a lot of headaches. And mind you I watched some other shows with singing girl fighting mecha but maybe I tolerate it much because the ace pilot was badass and the girls are just singing plus the romance is good. But this one really gives me headaches when I see that battle scenes >_> I will continue to watch it but maybe I will need some pail reliever when I'm watching this one. And I watched anything that at least entertains me.

Then what show that doesn't give you a migraine? Anyway, it's too easy for me to point out the obvious.

don't think too much while watching this. if not just think of this as a comedic anime XD
even as a fan, I was giggling through some scene that was intended to be serious(?) :P

my expectation of next ep

MOAR PIMP YUKO PLZ~

The trainees learn to defend against Yuko's sexual harassment rather than the soldiers :P
Yuko's the more dangerous one lolol

Okay my bad on the studio. The girls are indeed look gorgeous but the dance routine or the way that's being animated is too much.

If by same standard with girls being idols and there are mechs around. At least macross series doesn't give me migraine. And a symphogear from last season.

I really need to turn my brains off before watching it and I really did when I'm watching this type of shows but its just not working when I saw that scenes. Plus I want to just ignore it.

I would rather watching the girls talk and see their dreams come true. Though the blue haired girl and pink haired girl was being in rival mode already in the end of episode 2. Just from shinning kirara and kirara following her back home.

i honestly think it's pointless to judge idols on singing and dancing skills. (tho Masuda Yuka, Akimoto Sayaka, Iwasa Misaki, Sato Natsuki, Takahashi Minami, Kashiwagi Yuki etc aren't bad singers)
They're freaking idols. not dancers/singers. idols are entertainers. not specialize in singing/dancing alone. Especially when it come to AKB who is market as unfinished product because it's the grown that's being focus on, not the actual polished talent.

idolmaster company milk money out of their fans too, release a new album every week to capitalize on their success. Most anime companies do that by producing plushies, CD singles, games, spin off, key chains, towels, figurines, DVD box set with 4 eps etc.
how is akb different? In the end, if they're not popular with alot of fans and people wouldn't like them, they wouldn't be selling as well.

And the "plastic" thing like i said. get to know them and you'll get it.

Anything dealing with copyright is their agencies, not AkiP.

So my guess is mostly the 2D thing.
Tho it's funny..otakus looking down on other wotas..even tho anime culture itself is looked down upon also lulz~ that's hilarious. People will probably discriminate you more if you like vocaloid or moe things compare to AKB so I dun get this lololol

No, I just share the sentiments of otaku in Japan for the most part. Like I said, you can believe it or not believe it. All I can say is, this is the attitude I can see from all of the people around me. I don't really mind if you want to stay in your bubble.

Idolmaster milks the shit out of its fans. That's 100% true. That's why they are paying for it dearly. The idolmaster franchise is almost completely dead. You know it's bad, when you can still buy the special limited edition of the game on amazon for a discount price more than 6 months after release. AKB is no different just that they haven't reached tipping point yet.

In the end, even if you sell 1,000,000 disks there are still 120,000,000 otherpeople in Japan who didn't buy the disk. The number of people who don't like or don't care about AKB will always outnumber the people who do. Just because a lot of people like you doesn't mean a lot of people aren't critical of you and what you are doing.

As for the plastic thing, getting to know them isn't really a factor. Impressions are what count especially to otaku who aren't going to give them a chance. Hate isn't really a rational thing.

AKB is represented by their record companies who go too far out of their way to protect their IP. That's why the fan art and other fan derivative works don't exist. No one wants to make something if it's just going to be taken down. It's a big killjoy and it doesn't matter if is AKB doing it or someone doing it on their behalf. In the end, it's stifling the fan derivative works. Well either way, we'll see in 3 months. Comiket should be a good measure of popularity within Otaku.

People are not rational beings lol. They will discriminate within themselves even as others discriminate against them. The problem is that AKB fans get lumped together with otaku and they share Akiba. If you like AKB, you like Akiba, you like vocaloids, you like moe, you are related to that Akiba murderer, etc. all by this ridiculous association that a lot of people here do. If you don't want to commit career suicide, you have to appear completely disinterested in any of this idol stuff. Oh, but recognized pop stars are ok! Sigh. Japan.

Of course he is. There is the fun fan art, and then there are inevitably the people who draw the hardcore porn. Seeing how important this idol image is, I can see why he is so protective. But it's stifling for the people who just want to make parodies and stuff

Bubble?................
i know people dislike akb. I just think people should give anything a try before disliking it but that's just me.
probably my hate for AKB before made me not to judge a book by it's cover so w/e.

No that was just a response to your comment on why people are singling out AKB for pandering even though they are selling lots of disks and other goods to people who want them. And by extension they are fulfilling demand The answer is like I just wrote.

Though that Kotaku article is ridiculous. I feel dumber for having read it.

The correct answer to the question, which AKB singer do you like? Is actually ,"I don't know them too well." unless you want to be ostracized on the spot.

maybe it's just people you know that don't like idols.

3:03. This homophobic, racist, photoshop abusing girl just arrived in Japan and when she said she listen to Japanese music, instantly the host asked if she listen to AKB48 or know them.
AKB was the first name they threw out there out of all the japanese artists in japan.
obviously they got some mainstream recognition.

Anecdotally, some Japanese college students visited my Japanese class a month or so ago. I asked one of them, "So what's big in Japan right now?" and she responds, "Hmm... oh, have you heard of AKB48?"

So yeah. Totally anecdotal, of course, but I don't get the impression being an AKB fan is really "niche".

Notice how all of the people you mention are girls.

It's socially acceptable for girls to do pretty much whatever.

For men, not so much. This society is quite weird.

AKB is common place, but unless you are outwardly wota, very few men will openly admit they know and like AKB.

I asked her "what's big?" and not "what are you into?" She didn't seem like a fan. What she said amounted to, "Yeah, they're like a group full of cute girls. The guys dig that stuff."

*shrug* Just a thought.
