Here are some stats for 1998 (reported cases only, of course): Rape per 100,000. 1. United States 34.20 2. England and Wales 14.69 3. France 13.38 Taiwan 8.82 South Korea 4.38 Spain 3.23 Japan 1.48 Robbery/Violent Theft per 100,000. 1. Spain 169.85 2. United States 169.02 3. France 144.10 Taiwan 14.35 South Korea 11.74 Japan 2.71 I'm no expert on the psychology/sociology of Japan, but it certainly is artistically creative and a wonderful place for a foreigner (who reads some Japanese) to travel around in. I would say that the strong family is both the best and worst thing about life there (as in other East Asian societies). As a North American, I'd feel totally suffocated by the social pressure. But if I'm honest, I'd say that the social pressure may be one reason the porn doesn't have worse effects: you're so surrounded by watchers that only your thoughts are free. Directly transferring that amount of porn to North America might not work. Are the Japanese fucked up? Sure, and so is everyone else, in their own way. What about the incredible crime rate and hypocritical religiosity (think Pharisees) of the USA? France, Britain, Canada, Germany, Sweden, China: all have their own deep problems, for sure. |

I'd like to point out that we've got another thread where Japanese sexual deviancy is discussed. Please take your comments to the groper thread. This thread is for discussion of DearS. I'd appreciate (very emphatically) if all discussion that isn't about DearS was to cease here.

Well, as you know, at the outset I felt that DearS was rather inferior to Girls Bravo, because it had barely any humor that was not ecchi, and it had much ecchi that wasn't really humorous, just fanservice. But over time my opinion has changed. I still feel there is too much fanservice (think teacher), but DearS also has a clear direction. The main plot may only get a few glimpses in each episode (I really wonder how they will manage to resolve it in 13 episodes) but people change and there is a continuity where each episode builds on the one before. It is not just a collection of sketches, it is a story, with plenty of interesting characters that interact with each other. I'm willing to sit through some pointless nudity in order to get a good story.
And in the current temptation of Takeya the sexual element is not frivolous but an important part of the story. If a boy can command a girl to do him sexual favors, that would certainly be a real temptation to many a single boy. I am not sure if Takeya's basic goodness is enough to hold him back, or whether he will be "saved" by Ren's faulty programming. (If she makes love with the same natural grace that she makes food, his virtue should be safe enough...) |

I find the character designs and animation very bright and sharp, the DearS look great. I'm not sure if you're referring to how often the faces and scenes change to flat-looking things/characters expression change to something goofy looking or chibi-fied. But those things would be the animators trying to capture what the manga did in certain scenes. |

I agree with Trax, episode 6 was not very memorable, except perhaps for the very beginning and end. But it does move the story forward a little more. I think we've had enough of Miu-chan's airy attitude though. I hope they don't try to stretch this for much longer.
I think Nii and Natsuki would go well together. I'm sure we'll get to know Natsuki better in the next episode. Also I assume her arrival will ensure that there are no further attempts to ease Takeya's sexual frustration. |

Whats annoying me the most is that even when the characters are normal they look chibi. Definetly not Onegai animation level. I usually love BESM (big eyes, small mouth) animation style but its like their using chibi traits even when the chars are not supposed to be. About episode 6, I think the plot is too slow for a 13 episodes serie, the ending is probably gonna be deceiving or extremly happy, either mahoromatic or chobits style wich had both bad ending. |

Prehaps because of all the anime/manga I watched/read since I can open my eyes without crying (I am not kidding), I am not particularly offended by the drawing. In fact I found the drawing much more pleasent than say the Onegai serie.
Maybe the reason why everyone are agreeing the show is getting better is because the one that don't like it, are gone already at the 1st 3 eps. If you don't want to read the manga you could alway play the ps2 game. Then you could come back and tell us its' ending PS the mini version of the characters are very common in Anime, some call it Q-version, and it follows a 1-1-1(1-2) rule instead of the normal 1-2-2 rule.

Anyway, if the show is inly 13 episodes I don't see the story going anywhere, because practically nothing happened in the first 6 episodes. Not that the story matters much here, IMO this show exists just for the comedy, cuteness and fan-service. |

About it being 13 eps, was that actually confirmed? Maybe the website mentions it, but it's in japanese only so I can't really get any info from there. If it is 13 eps, it's moving along a bit slow, but I'll keep watching it for the comedy anyway. Just hope they don't mess up the ending.
